I like that the gloss black paint makes them look like they're made from obsidian. It's nice that you made a feature of their rough, pitted metal than tried to grind it all away into dust, leaving barely any scissor.

I'm so, so happy that you left it rather pitted and worn down and just repaired it enough to be functional and still beautiful, in my own opinion. I'm tired of all the channels that breaks things down and build them back up artificially until you cant ever tell that it was ever flawed or restored in the first place. I know many people like that kind of thing, but I find it gorgeous when you can see the life something has gone through, the damage and wear and decay it has suffered, but you get to see how someone has loved it enough to bring it back from the brink of destruction while still letting it be its own unique item. I find the finished result perfect in it's own imperfect way.

Personally I like watching old things made like new or functional but with signs of age, even if there is no ‘financial gain’ or if it’s ‘cheaper & easier’ to go get a new item. Sometimes the journey is what’s important, & a lot of people seem to forget that nowadays.

I love that while you made sure they were in perfect working order, you didn’t “over” restore them to look aesthetically new. They still look like they’ve been torn from a page of time, and that gives them some really nice sentimental value to know they’ve been around so long and still work.

@@davidw.798 I think they are saying that given the level of restoration achieved in the video, and that this was done by an exceptionally skilled person, that if they couldn't have been restored further here then they weren't worth restoring and equally that no one else would have been able to restore them further either. So they are implicitly saying they couldn't have done any better hence your question doesn't quite make sense.

@@tomsheets6399 did i use any of them in the wrong context or anything? Were u unable to understand my point? You get restore, restored, restorer, and restoration are all different words with different meanings? One is a verb in present tense, one is a verb in past tense, the others are nouns, one describing a person. Its funny how describing my complaint about this i would need 4 different versions of a word to convey my meaning. Sure i could of used other words if i was a writer writing a book but for a comment on the internet its best not to assume that everyone reading it is going to understand the synonyms for a restoration topic. I mean my first use of restore was in quotations meaning that i was implying the use of the word restore wasnt the correct use by the channel in the first place.

Since I love collecting scissors and use very old scissors as I work with a lot of different types of mediums. Those scissors are “bookbinding” shears and that’s why they’re riveted and not screwed, and have the one blade flat. They cut heavy materials. I would have been surprised if you were able to restore them to working condition (able to cut leather and bookbinding board). As is, they’re a nice decorative piece! So much better than rusting and disintegrating, lost to time.

Most restorations seem like the tool is being reborn. This felt more like necromancy. Now I'm not knocking that, mind you. Oddly enough, I like it. Gives it personality. After all these years, it still endures. It's not truly dead until it shatters.

Interesting piece of work, but finished appears more like "ended". I thought you would have cleaned them up better. Obviously these were frightful to begin with, but I had hoped you would ean them up better. Thanks for sharing and sorry for the negativity in my comments because I do enjoy your videos. 🇨🇱🇺🇸🤔🥂

@happydillpickle

I'm as mad as the person who makes these videos and have a collection of all sorts of rusty tools. I have found them in all manner of places: skips/dumpsters, on walks in cities, towns, thrown behind bins, in the woods, at council rubbish tips. Sometimes people put stuff out on the pavement/sidewalk with a "help yourself" sign. Some things, people had cleared out their garages or sheds. Once you start actively looking and asking around you will end up with a boxful so big you will be able to restore to your heart's content! Good luck!

The finished product isn’t perfect, but considering what lengths you had to go to to get it to where it was that’s pretty impressive. Sometimes you just can’t restore it to a completely smooth surface sometimes you just have to make it look as good as you can and make it work again.

I have scissors just like those (but no rust) that I bought at a yard sale for $1. Based on the maker's ID, I dated the scissors to circa 1850, Sheffield, England. The only problem with this particular pair was the original fulcrum bolt was gone, and somebody had replaced it with a short machine screw and a wingnut a long time ago.

I love your videos! I have a question though.. On one of the cleavers that you restored you chose to use electrolysis to remove the rust. Why was that method used for that project vs other methods? I'm learning there are several methods to remove rust, and I'm curious why one way is better than another.
@SerenaBluee
@SerenaBluee 2 жыл бұрын
I cannot comment on the reasoning for the choices in this instance, but I understand electrolysis is a bit less aggressive on the parts than chemical rust removers and mechanical processes such as media blasting or using a wire wheel.

Too damaged. Very thin at some places. Although, it could be fixed by grinding, welding and sanding. But that would take too much time, and money of course.

As impressed as I am that they even opened, let alone survive the rest of the restoration process, I feel like the only way to get them to a point that everyone would be happy with them is if you built up the metal to the point where there would be more new metal rather than the original metal. So that would kind of defeat the purpose. On a project as small scale as this, it was probably best just to melt the scissors down.
