I like to use Glenfiddich 12 as a calibration whisky. My palate can vary considerably from day to day, so I like to use it as a starter dram before trying a new whisky to make sure I am not having a bad palate day. I know it well, I know it doesn't have anything off-putting, it is low ABV, it won't overwhelm anything I taste afterwards, and it is enjoyable enough on its own. If it tastes as I expect, then I can be somewhat confident that I will be able to fairly evaluate whatever I am tasting next.

This bottle was my introduction to the world of scotch and its still a really good everyday sipper.

It can be found for $25-$30 where I'm at. That's why I first bought it. Living in the southern midwest, I'm used to drinking bourbon, but I wanted to try scotch and I heard it was a good starting point without breaking the bank. For the price of a bottle of Makers, I was happy to give it a go and I'm glad I did. Wonderful whiskey.

I'm normally a fan of peated scotch but this standard dram really surprised me with the green apple, pears and honey. I've only had a few mini bottles but it impressed me every time. Nice review, fellas.

Good review. It's ok to be generous and bring a little perspective into the scoring. I think a lot of these 1.2 mil consumers don't even want to enter the journey. They like their glenfiddich. End of story. I wanted to know what was going on with this wall of bottles in the store ranging from $19.95 to $250.00 and beyond. And thanks to y'all I have some idea of what's what. This bottle is all about the aging and the 12. Its seems like it ain't new-make. Then they're finding a home for a lot of real whiskey, so how bad could it be? I know guys who only buy 1.75's and drink it over ice. It could be kirkland blend or monkey shoulder or this. My style is 46% or higher etc etc etc. I don't want to spend $80 and be disappointed, but it happens. That's because I listen to the dummies. There's really no accounting for taste.

You guys should do a blind comparison of all the entry level flagships from all the Glens. For entry level juice, Glenmorangie Original I still feel is the best.
@sundayeveningscotch49784 жыл бұрын
I agree w/ Mark it's a solid foundational scotch. In its general category I do like it more than Glenlivet 12, but I like Glenmorangie 10 more than this one. But if I'm being honest it's prob more like a 1.5 for me. Cheers, boys.

What's been the consensus favorite 12 yr old whiskey for you guys? I like the Aberfeldy 12 as an economically smooth sipper, but curious which brings the most flavor to the table? I find I like some of the finished whiskeys also, so keep those in mind when picking the top ones. Great review!

I don’t know if 1.2 million cases are wrong but the 1.0 bottles I have is still 80% full and it’s looking for a new home. I’d recommend to anyone starting with scotch to spend the extra $5 and grab a bottle of Glenlivet 12.

Can get this bottle for $30 here, so it is always in my house. I had heard this was something like 90%/10% ex-bourbon/oloroso sherry cask. The 18 year I hear ups the sherry portion so it is more like 80/20. Not sure if that's bullshit or not, but just what I have heard out there.

There's always a snob on every video, talking about his 46% ABV no color no chill filtering.. like it's the holy grail of whisky. It's NOT! Open your mind and you wouldn't miss out on so many good whiskies. Unfortunately, snobbery and dogma has become the norm, I see.

Now there's no reason to get personal or attack someone for their opinions here. The entire journey is subjective and unique to the individual, so embrace the diversity and respect the opinions...even if you don't agree with them! ;-) Now, I can ride both sides of this argument as I love me some cask strength goodness, but also understand and appreciate why coloring and chill filtration is needed....in the end, to me the most important thing is do I enjoy it (regardless of everything else)! There's room for everyone!!!!! ~Mark

Jesper Christensen : wanting my whiskey to have an ABV above the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM, without artificial color, or chill filtration does not make me a snob. It makes me someone who has preferences with his whiskey. I’ve tried a bunch of 40% ABV stuff and in general they have been disappointing. Having preferences does not make me a snob. Personally I want my Scotch to have some punch to it. And if I want something light and easy I buy a $20 bottle of Irish Whiskey.

Get a grip Jesper. The likes of Glenfiddich and Glenlivet produce bog standard whisky and have done since going to mass market. To say they are cheap crap is just the truth. I use Malt review here is the UK as a fairly good benchmark of what's worth purchasing or not and the likes of Glenfiddich, Jura and and so on take a hammering in there scores. Iv'e noticed they seem to be more popular in the States. But whisky is subjective of course just staggered how this scores higher than the Longrow Peated for example
