I came across this definition of "Blackmail" while reading about the Border Reivers. Interestingly the "mail" part of blackmail derives from Middle English with male meaning "rent or tribute." This tribute (male or reditus) was paid in goods or labour ("nigri"); hence reditus nigri, or "blackmail". Payment in goods and labour was seen under the feudal system where a surf work so many days for the lord. A rent payable in money was sometimes called white rent or, blanche farm or reditus albi. So whitemail.

Would love a video on the Moon being known as MacFarlane's lantern. I know it is because of cattle rustling by the MacFarlane's at night, but would love to know historically when it was first used, in relation to which MacFarlane and how wide spread it was used in Scotland.

Tracing my ancestry back a few hundred years , Ive avoided making any connections to Rob Roy MacGregor , instead concentrating on the slums of Glasgow, which is a more likely a place of my families origins, my McGregor's eventually relocating to the slums of the North east ( England ) Seeking work in the shipyards and coal mines, A more realistic lineage, Royal is my race ? only if the local pub was named the " Royal ",I remain Duncan McGregor , named after my 4 x gandfather born in Glasgow 1834, probably born from a long line of uncertain parents whatever name they chose .

Hi Robert! May I call you Robbie? I don't want to presume. So, I was reading the comments that other day and discovered that Graeme is your brother. At first I thought you were twins! I think taking out insurance on your cattle is a great idea! Especially during the mad days of rustling. I *need* a Highland cow! They are very popular on modern (read chinese made) art in America. When they come up for auction on my local auction pages, they always go for more than I can afford. So, please to send me an actual cow. A nice pregnant one.
