First time I've seen a driver cut the curbs so much he was well into the grass multiple times. Rally cars are a whole different breed and very fun to watch.

Nice. I remember when Scott Speed was competeting with lots of other American drivers in the RedBull competition for the F1 Toro Roso seat. Big fan. Great guy to pull this off. Love the Car and Driver Lightening Lap and look forward to it every year.

Scott is living his best life, really carved out a solid career after his F1 stint...

The stability of the car is incredible, it looks like it's not at all struggling on the lap. Makes me think I could drive it haha. Probably couldn't do great, but hey I'd love to try

What impresses me is the dude who drove the nascar didn't know he was trying to set the record until the day of. He thought it was kind of like a photo shoot so he wasn't prepared at all.

The word NASCAR designates the sanctioning body, not the race cars themselves. They are usually referred to as Cup cars. stock cars, or stockers.

It's nutty how he has to brake BEFORE the marker on the hairpin. I've done the shorter courses on VIR and get all mixed up with the elevation changes and blind corners. In awe of Scott and every other professional driver.

I love haters ! I had 450 whp sti that lasted for 5 years and still sold it in good working conditions to the guy close to VIR. It had stock drive train and stock long block. Crazy reliable.

The top speeds were comparable. It may have been the 56 car had quicker acceleration off the turns but was slower in the braking.

Dude had to slow down for traffic and still did the lap record lol I love how this thing eats curbs why don’t dedicated track cars like the Porsche eat curbs like this ? Is this suspension softer?

I like Scoot Speed. But respectfully, please just post the standalone onboard race lap

5:06 would this lap be allowed? What he did is extremely impressive but that seems out of bounds. The Camaro felt cleaner. But two totally different cars and very similar times.

Yes he's still on the tarmac with one wheel

@sleo2215 thank you. Is this a universal rule? I'm newer to this.

I think 5:21 is more of the question. It's hard to see based on the camera postion, but he might have 1 side on the rumble strips, but it's possible be might be close to fully on the grass.

I think that lap would have been flagged... You do have to turn in the corners. It's an S not a I

Its rally car suspension is a disadvantage everywhere else, gotta make up time where you can.

his placement was just fine, very aggressive over curbs but kept then outside wheels on the asphalt. George Follmer would be proud

I believe he meant that you can have the car very unsettled from hard braking and still be quick and aggressive on the power.

take a 4x4 vehicle put it in 2wd(esp rwd based) in icy conditions do 60mph and just let off the throttle, now do the same but in 4wd and see what the difference is. In the meantime tell this rallycross world champion how things work by all means lol
@ryancompeau1469 ай бұрын
@Haulinbassracing because icy conditions is the same as a race car, on a race track, with race slicks on it lol.
@Haulinbassracing9 ай бұрын
@@ryancompeau146 the limit of traction is the limit of traction, I just made a comparison thats easy for the average person to replicate to educate themselves instead of repeating bullshit they have heard or been told. Having a wheel driven as opposed to being freewheeled is 100% an advantage when slowing a car down. if it wasnt rally cars would be running a one way power setup that freewheeled not under power either through the front diff or transfer case. put it this way, if say with a rwd car 80% of your braking comes from the brakes the other 20% comes from compression braking from the engine. if you add an extra driven axel, the front then can naturally brake harder as the engine is doing some more of the braking and it doesnt require turning the forward energy into heat the same way brakes do.
