If you're having a hard time increasing your SQUAT or DEADLIFT, this is the video you need to be watching. All that "hip explosiveness" power heavily relies on your glutes & hamstrings working together. However, if you spend all your time training each muscle group with isolation type movements, over time your glutes and hamstrings will not function properly as one unit during heavy squats/deadlifts. I might even suggest you see how much weight you can lift for a solid set of 8 reps for both squats & deadlifts sometime this week. Then try the workout provided here for 4 - 6 weeks and revisit squats & deadlifts and see how much you've improved in terms of how much weight you can NOW lift for a solid set of 8 reps. Especially if you've been stuck hitting the same numbers for a while. As always, you can read the article version of this video on my website by clicking this link: muscularstrength.com/article/this-is-how-you-build-massive-glutes-hamstrings

This is a great video! For decades, decades ( since I started weight training) !! I could never connect my glutes/hams in the Romanian DL ( AKA stiff legged DL) . Whenever I watched a video or read how to do this exercise, pics would show people with their legs straight ( apart from knees unlocked). I did this exercise this way all this time. In this video, Scott shows how he hinges deeper ( almost a partial squat) which actually loads the Glutes/Hams. I tried it earlier and they engaged instantly. It's better late than never! I wish people would explain the exercise this way. I'm sure I'm not the only one who had problems connecting with this one. Thanks!

For glutes specifically, a recent study has made the step up as by far and away the king of glute development exercise. Way more than thrust too.

Hey there Scott! Great video as always. Would you rate the hip thrust higher than the glute bridge? I've found it really helpful even with light weights, especially when controlling the weight throughout the eccentric phase and not resting it on the ground
@ScottHermanFitness2 жыл бұрын
Hip thrust is good because of the longer ROM. But we get pretty good ROM on the leg curl and RDL, so the glute bridge is ideal to go heavier!

Hi Scott, a little off topic but do you have any thoughts on the new advice going around on not retracting and holding your scapula there, during the bench press? I've been seeing more and more coaches say to let the scapula move naturally instead of full retraction. This goes against fundamentals I have learned so I just wanted to know your current opinion on this.
@ScottHermanFitness2 жыл бұрын
Definitely keep using retraction. Otherwise your front delts will just takeover and that’s when you can get injured
@lurklingX2 жыл бұрын
@@ScottHermanFitness i was trying to find a coach for this reason - to avoid injury. but it's scary how many trainers might still give bad advice. how the heck are we supposed to stay safe? is there any gold standard book or something? where do the knowledgeable pros get their knowledge? who is the keeper of high knowledge and science on this stuff? or the studies about most effective exercises/lifts? (i want a way to spot check myself, but also be informed, and if i work with a CPT, make sure they aren't giving unsafe advice) i'm seriously seriously worried about injuries. btw, i'm new here just now. hoping you have some of those vids on "what not to do" that show common mistakes in form vs the correct way to perform. those are FANTASTIC and so helpful.

Is it normal for lower back to round with the rdl if you go to low? I can go a bit below the knee but mid shin seems to be a spot where I get rounding, even with light weight.
@StrengthHacksCoaching2 жыл бұрын
Yeah eventually there will be some rounding, you can train this to improve your lower back strength and size of the erector muscles. Just make sure to load it carefully and progress at a steady rate, doing too much too soon with lower back training is high risk
@iK0NiK2 жыл бұрын
I'll also add to be REALLY careful when coming back up after your back has rounded slightly. It's very easy for the lower back to take the brunt of the lift when you're straightening it on the way back up. Slow and controlled. If you start to feel like someone is pushing against the muscles in your lower back even while you're standing up, it's time to take a rest and double check your form.

Leg curls/nordic curls are top excercises for strengthening the hamstrings, whats the reasoning behind your comment? Why 15+ reps only? There are no mandatory rep ranges, at least for isolation excercises
