Most claim they're pointless, but at work they have great use. I work at McDonalds and we use them on our iPads for our UberEats and Table tracker iPads. Often the WiFi in the restaurant goes down due to congestion or low temperatures in the server room (Northern Canada, -35c regularly here) and the LAN always works no matter what. Without this our UberEats and Table service just wouldn't work 1/2 of the time!

Most health studies regarding wifi or 5G are questionable as the stats can be compiled to show any outcome. The real and most legitimate reason to use ethernet is wifi's and cell signal's lack of privacy and vulnerability to data interception.

Interesting video, Scottie! As always, I enjoy the videos and keep making them! I hate to ask a question like this but my ISP techs aren’t the greatest at configuring issues and I’ve searched a lot about this issue and can’t find a solution. I turn my devices all off at the end of the night. When my gf gets up in the morning before me, she turns on her phone and it finds the router but doesn’t want to transfer any data, so she has to reset the router and then it works. I wake up an hour or two later and turn on my phone and it done the same thing, but it also makes every device in the house lose connection until we reset. This started happening when our ISP swapped our modem/router. We have a dual band router off their modem/router and the ISP turned off WiFi on their modem/router. It’s not a serious issue but it’s annoying to have to reset the router 2-3 times daily. I don’t know much but I’m thinking this has to do with my dual band router recognizing a new IP after it disconnects for a certain period of time. I hate to blame the isp’s router but it started happening after they put a new one in. We’ve had the same dual band for years so nothing there has changed. If you don’t want to help, I understand. If anyone else wants to chime in, please do! Thanks for the great videos, Scottie! Keep up the great work!

Just today I received a Tecknet USBC to Ethernet adapter from Amazon for my Samsung Galaxy S5e tablet, plugged it in and it was picked up immediately! It was plug and play, it did come up asking for all sorts of info, like IP address, DNS name etc., but I noticed that the Ethernet icon was showing on the top, tried to go to a website, and voila! I'm so happy because since the last Windows update my HP laptop has stopped working with the Ethernet adapters and I get very poor WiFi signals, which works only occasionally (when the wind is blowing in the right direction, today it's not, so I'm now on my tablet 🙄) TFS 👍❤

Can you charge your phone/tablet using Ethernet if the switch you use is POE? I assume it's not a thing at the moment.
@ScottiesTech5 жыл бұрын
I've never seen anything like that, but it would be pretty cool. POE provides ~12W or so to devices, so it would certainly be enough to charge a gizmo pretty quickly. The dongle would need to pass the power thru to the USB port. Normal dongles CAN be used with a POE switch/device, because POE is negotiated when devices are connected together - so you shouldn't fry your dongle if using a POE switch.

@ScottiesTech Жыл бұрын
Traditional calls and text messages require the cell network more or less - unless you are using calls/messaging in a specific app, or if you use 'WiFi calling' (on some phones, with some service providers).
@amycopp-brown283 Жыл бұрын

I am able to use usb tethering from my phone to my laptop. But I tried that same phone with usb type c cable and tried to connect it in in the usb type c port of my tablet but it didn't work. USB tethering was greyed out on my phone. Any other suggestions?

Phone -> Tablet is often tricky and usually requires a special app and/or rooting the tablet... Usually, I just create a WiFi hotspot on the phone, then use that on the tablet. Since I don't do it very often, that was my not-very-wired solution.

Dude hell yeah. I've been trying to find a solution that will charge my samsumg S8+ while giving it ethernet (ethernet adapters drain the battery), and also allowing it to output audio to my speakers all through USBC. I think it might work with a hub but I haven't tried it yet.

Yes it's possible, but usually not easy - at least not as easy as using the phone as a WiFi hotspot. In many cases, you need to root the phone.

I'm here because of two things: 1) I want to know the difference between USB tethering and Ethernet tethering. 2) I want to know which is faster. I have a Samsung Z Flip 5G. What I'm kind of understanding, which is complicated haha- is that USB tethering makes use of one cable adapter whereas Ethernet tethering makes use of a dongle adapter and an Ethernet cable. The second case might be applied more to connect a PC or perhaps a live camera. Can someone help me with my 2nd question? Great video! Btw
@ScottiesTech3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, but I'm afraid I don't know the exact answer. Since your phone appears to have a USB3 type C connector, it can easily support 1Gbps download speeds over either USB or Ethernet. The faster connection would depend on the exact implementation of USB vs Ethernet tethering. My guess is they'd both be the same speed, but latency might be a bit higher for one or the other. Hard to say!
@taoufikulislam5 жыл бұрын
is it possible to tether LAN via Wi-Fi using android AccessPoint? Can you test that as you have all the dongles :-)
@ScottiesTech5 жыл бұрын
I've tried this before, and it's pretty hit-or-miss out of the box. Some phones work perfectly, and others not so much. For example, it doesn't work on my Nexus 5X - unless the phone is rooted. If you root your phone, then you can prolly get them all to do this.

Android sometimes does the same thing... I think what's happening is that some apps on the phone can't "see" the Ethernet as a net connection. So if WiFi is off, they think you're offline (or parts of the software do, anyway). I don't know of any fix for it, unfortunately. Everybody just assumes we all use WiFi, all the time!

If I plugged one into my phone and then into my computer would the connection be faster if I use a hotspot for gaming?
@ScottiesTech4 жыл бұрын
I think you'd have to do USB Tethering. The puter would then use the phone's internet over a simple USB cable. But your phone must support it, and I've found it's not always terribly reliable. It sometimes takes awhile for the puter to 'see' the net connection.

You can easily use the phone as a WiFi hotspot for 1 puter, or do the same with a USB connection in most cases. But using Ethernet in that way is a bit tricky and requires either a special app and/or rooting the phone. AFAIK!
