egg nog is more than eggs, it is sort of a liquid custard . so it contains egg yolks whipped egg whites, sugar, cream, and spices nutmeg and cinnamon. Frequently people will add spirits, most common are whiskey/ bourbon, rum ,brandy or cognac..

Completely home-made eggnog is about 1,000,000,000 times better than the pre-packaged stuff in the stores. So if you do decide to try it, see if you can score some real eggnog from scratch. Try with and without a decent whisky. Two different drinks. And Merry Christmas, by the way!

All around South Louisiana in open fields and on the levees, people build huge bonfires to light the way for Santa (or Papa Noel) to find the cajun children. We open our family gifts on Christmas Eve and send the kids to bed so Santa can deliver his presents. When we wake up in the morning his gifts are under the tree.

Here's a Canadian Christmas for ya! It's definatly alllll about family and friends. In our home, we each open 1 gift on Christmas Eve. It's tradition. Then we watch " It's A Wonderful Life". It's tradition. Christmas morning is much like yours. Coffee first. It's tradition. Can you see a pattern forming? 😂 Then presents. All this while the turkey is in the oven. With my husband being a Newfie, we have " Jiggs Dinner" with our turkey. This is salt beef, carrot, turnip, cabbage and potatoes all cooked in one huge pot. Tons of stuffing...with loads of summer savory and onion in it...homemade cranberry sauce...lots of gravy, ect. You get the picture! We dont drink, so no booze in our house. Then when you think youre about to burst, loads of homemade desserts come out. Then we go into a food coma for a few days!😂 Merry Christmas, to you and the lovely Teca, from Ontario, Canada 🍁...Keli 💖

In Louisville, KY, we have a tradition the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday but it's not connected) called Light Up Louisville, which happens downtown at a courtyard where a giant spruce tree is stood and decorated. On the Courthouse lawns are wire figures of X-mas, decorated with lights. On the buildings there are snowflakes of lights - and at 8:00 p.m. They are turned on. Beautiful sight! That same night, the shops on Bardstown Road (long, important, and shop - filled) light up their shops with X mas decorations, and the sidewalks are crammed with people visiting these shops and taking in some hospitality, food, and drink. Once I even got to hear the Louisville Pipe and Drum Corps play lovely Scottish songs. Very festive!

Shaun. First, Merry Christmas. Here is a very good (and now I will have to make it) recipe for eggnog. -4 egg yolks, beaten -2 cups whole milk -1/2 cup sugar -1 cup heavy cream -1 teaspoon of vanilla extract -Nutmeg (and the whole bean grated over the top is way better than the powdered stuff!) Directions - heavy saucepan, mix the eggs, milk and sugar over low to medium heat until it will coat the back of a metal spoon. Cool this in a sink or ice bath while stirring for a minute or two. Add the heavy cream and vanilla, and stir to combine. Refrigerate for at least a couple of hours, preferably 4 (and up to 24), covered with saran wrap (UK folks probably call this "cling wrap"). Serve it up in a cup or highball glass with a touch of the liquor of your choice. I prefer rum, but bourbon works well. I'd avoid Scotch, though. The peatiness would conflict with the sweetness, though it is your call. You can completely omit the alcohol if that is your preference. Grate some nutmeg over the top, and enjoy!

While your recipe sounds really good, it's only half of a true Egg Nog recipe. The separated whites of the 4 Eggs, with a tiny bit of Cream of Tartar should be slightly sweetened and beaten until you achieve stiff peaks. Then this "Meringue" is carefully folded into the hot Cream and Egg Yolk "Custard" mixture to maintain as much volume as possible for thickness and luscious mouth feel. There is nothing in this world like homemade Egg Nog.

In southern Louisiana, on the earthen levees of the bayous and Mississippi River are dozens of 20-feet-high flaming pyramids of burning logs. The Christmas Bonfires, as locals call them, are mostly teepee-shaped, but some can be odd shapes paying tribute to the river’s heritage-shapes ranging from miniature plantation homes to tiny replica paddlewheel steamships. Bonfires are built by families, friends and co-workers who visit, cook and mingle between the fires. It’s a local celebration with an environment akin to football tailgating, and the practice has continued for generations.

I love the bonfires my grandfather use to build one every year until he passed away. We celebrated with gumbo, stuffed mirliton, roasted Cochon de Lait, decadent desserts, a lot more food you can name. Fireworks was a tradition and we my family played life zydeco in the our family home and we attended mass.

I live in South Florida; my family is from Puerto Rico and we traditionally celebrate Christmas Eve and not really Christmas Day. We eat a big dinner around 7-8pm then change into our new pajamas, which we get new ones yearly and wait for midnight to open presents. My grandmother told me many Hispanics celebrate that way to honor a saint (don’t remember which one). This year is different since they all moved out of state and it’s just my little family (kids and husband) and I, so we decided to start our own traditions.

Sir, I hail from South Dakota and am of Norwegian heritage. I have suffered from lutefisk (LOOT-ah-fisk) my whole life. It is generally available even in small town (ours numbers 250 people) grocery stores during the holidays. It is in fact white fish soaked in lye. Usually cod. It is gelatinous and stinks to high heaven but it's edible to the strong of heart. It becomes less popular every year as we ourselves become more Americanized. Lefse - a potato based flat bread, krumekake - a thin waffle like cookie rolled into a cone, and rosettes - a thin fried cookie/pastry are still popular and much much better.

We'd get into our jammies, and often we had hot cocoa before we left, then we'd all pile into the car and drive slowly through the streets admiring the lighted Christmas displays on houses and stores. Apparently it was a Detroit area thing. I did the same with my kids when they were little. You should add more shelves in between some of them so there's more room for knickknacks, and you need me to come paint the Scottish & American flags on the backs of each shelf (I work cheap and I'm quiet and I would bring Buc-ees snacks). Eggnog IS weird, but the flavor is amazing and eggnog ice cream is miraculous. Lutefisk is disgusting (I used to live up north among the Norwegian Lutherans). The central Christmas tradition here in my rural north TX town is each church's Christmas Eve candlelight service, where the Bible story is read and carols are sung, and each person holds a candle. It's absolutely beautiful.

Because we have such a big family and celebrate with all the aunts, uncles, cousins and such we end up having to go to 3 or 4 different Christmas family celebrations. When I was a kid it was more exciting to be able to go to 3 different places and open presents but now as an adult it's a little hectic.

My family’s Christmas tradition going back about 150 years is Whisky Cake. Made with the fruit mincemeat, spices and nuts. Whisky too, of course. Also, whenever the Whisky goes into the cake a wee dram goes inna the cook too!

We always called it mincemeat pie. The filling is mainly fruit and spices and sugar, but does contain a tiny bit of beef. That's the only thing I think of when I hear the word mincemeat, because we just call the other mincemeat "hamburger meat."

My American Mother always baked Mince Meat and Pumpkin Pies for Christmas. She also made wonderful Cookies (Biscuits), Fudge, Nut Brittle and Chocolate Almond covered English Toffee. Her father's family has English roots back to Jamestown. There's also a Cherokee later in that line so there may be a Scot in my woodpile. Who knows?

Celts is pronounced like Kelts. The people are a k sound, the teams are a soft c sound. Also, we have a ton of tumbleweeds in Arizona, although the first time I ever saw a tumbleweed was in Southern California. Eggnog is delicious.

I grew up in the DC area and would go to Mount Vernon at Christmas time. We would see the camel...it was in a field near the mansion, along with carolers and a tent with hot cider and ginger cookies. You could also take a candlelight tour of the mansion. Me and my scotsguy (from Falkirk) husband considered this an important part of our holidays...and he has learned a lot of US history doing things like this.

The Great Roman Census was in March by the Julian Calendar. Saturnalia was the Roman winter solstice celebration, and it lasted 12 days. It was very popular, and the Christians were smart enough not to remove it, but replace it.

In my small town (which is called a "borough" in this state) in south central Pennsylvania, U.S.A., they have a cute tradition. About a week before Christmas, a fire truck is driven up and down all the local streets, siren blaring, with a man dressed up as Santa Claus riding on the outside of the fire truck and waving to all the children and adults waiting along the roadside.

There's a number of cities here in Florida where they have boat parades in December. People decorate their boats- sailboats and fishing boats mostly- with Christmas lights and those big blow-up decorations and then parade past the city's main riverside park. Jacksonville and St. Augustine have good ones, and I know there are other cities that have them. St. Augustine also has a great light display that covers most of the historic area. I highly suggest you visit St. Augustine when you come to the states. It's got some of the oldest buildings in the country, some dating back to the 1500s.

Shaun I love your pronunciation of lutefisk! My husband is Norwegian from Minnesota and he hates that stuff so we never have it. My in-laws also have lefsa, which is a potato tortilla that you put butter and sugar on. It's quite tasty. Another thing they make are rosettes. You take a rosette iron, dip it in hot oil, dip it in the batter, then fry it in the oil, then you put powdered sugar on top. So, so tasty!!

Hi Shaun In the eastern states of US, we have a parade of lights. Cars, trucks and anything else with an engine, decorate their vehicle in lights. Some have a theme and some just look pretty. They gather and drive down the main street of town and show off their work. Usually at the end of the parade there are ribbons or trophies given out to the best work. Hope you had a great Christmas in England!! Happy New Year!!
