My gosh! This is one of the BEST KZbin channels I've subscribed to! VERY informative, and full of energy and passion that's lacking in quite a lot of channels with this kind of subject matter. I've learned so much from this channel! As a freelance cartoonist and illustrator, it's helped me a lot finding where to make prints, how to make buttons and so much more! Keep you the great work! :D

Thank you for the great recommendations. For some reason I was having trouble finding solid printing solutions at reasonable prices. $15-$18 per print is insane for what I was needing. CatPrint seems to have the printing prices in the ballpark I was searching, especially at bulk. Ordered a sample pack from them as I type this. :D

Useful vid. Thinking about getting my work printed as some of my artwork would be really great printed. Also found some old comic book strips I started in my late teens before I lost a friend to cancer (he was a comic book artist). Now got all my art together and I have enough for my own exhibition but I kinda want to get prints done .

Thanks Rachael, CatPrint does a great job and the good thing is you can start with very small orders, so it's a good way to see how your art looks printed and who people react to it, before dropping a lot of cash on a big print run. Sorry to hear about your friend. I've lost friends and family way too early in life, all with so much potential.

Great videos, would it be possible in the future to make a video on where to get reasonably priced 11x17 scanners? Anything past 8.5x11 size causes the price to jump dramatically and was wondering if their are oversized scanners out there that don't cost a arm and a leg, thanks!

Thanks! I may have to do some more research on that, but my scanner has been acting up and I searched around for one and you're right they're are pretty pricey. I think our best bet is to find one second hand, on Craig's list or ebay or something.

You had an episode on mini comics some time back... I'm actually doing a bit of research on what sort of paper I should use for my mini comics and where I can send my material off for printing that may have that right sort of paper that I am wanting. what would you say would be the most cost effective stock that closely matches the same stock used for actual comic books? Maybe you could do an episode about that?
@ScottSerkland
@ScottSerkland 3 жыл бұрын
Well there's not really a standard stock for comics, and what is most common also has to do with the time period for a long time comics used newsprint, then some started using Baxter paper. If your talking about mini comics They are mostly don on standard copy paper . A lot of modern comics use a glossy stock that I don't particularly car for. I wouldn't worry too much about what others are using and pick a paper that you feel is right for you and your comic.
@gamingchinchilla7323
@gamingchinchilla7323 3 жыл бұрын
@@ScottSerkland thanks for your input :) I have some old comics from the mid 90s and I find the paper stock they used back then to be rather attractive. Not so glossy on the pages, but thick enough and just right to show off the fine inking detail and digital coloring. and a semi glossy cover with heavier paper weight. According to a website I visited after posting my question to you the "accepted" paperweight and paper type for self published comics are matte 60 for interior pages and gloss 80 for the cover But as you've said here in your reply, paper stock really doesn't matter for self published mini comics. I think I'll experiment with the paper types and sees what works best with my template. Thanks again!

Do you send in your artwork as PNG or PDF CYMK to catprint? I know they accept PNG according to their site but then the printing is no longer CMYK it would be RGB
@ScottSerkland
@ScottSerkland 5 жыл бұрын
I save my files as CMYK JPG files and then place them multiple page PDFs. So if I have three prints that I want 12 copies of I will place all three prints in a PDF and have them print 12 copies. If I have 2 other prints that I only need 2 copies I will place them in a PDF and have them make two copies. Hope that answers your question.

That whole process is a little too involved to cover here in the comment section, but your first step would be to photograph or scan your physical artwork, depending on what company you use to do your printing they should have a template with the correct sizes for each product they offer

Another question if you don't mind explaining how you actually get the original to be printed. Do you photograph a large piece and have it as a digital file compressed to send? I have a few 18 24 canvas paintings that I want printed off to actual size. Could you please explain how you figured this out?
@ScottSerkland
@ScottSerkland 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, so most of my work is either digital or 11" x17" original comic book art that I scan in on a large format printer. For what you are talking about you would have to photograph. Unfortunately I'm not very experienced with photographing artwork. you could attempt to do it yourself, I'm sure there are video online that will help with the kind of lighting and camera set up you need, or you may need to hire a professional photographer who specializes in shooting artwork.

Serkworks Art labs, I tried to have Shutterfly print my digital art but they rejected it because of low resolution. How can I increase the resolution?
@ScottSerkland
@ScottSerkland 5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, if you start at a low resolution there really isn't a way to increase it. ( you can lower your resolution but you can't do the opposite.) 300 DPI and up is required for most printing. So need to start at 300 dpi and at the size you want to print when you first set up your file. I sometimes go larger just in case I decide later on I want to print something larger. The only exception to this rule is if you are doing vector art in a program like Adobe Illustrator, Vector art is all mathematical information and can be scaled up or down without any loss of quality.

Are the prints archival?
@ScottSerkland
@ScottSerkland 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no. For me it wasn't a big deal to switch from the archival photo prints I was getting at Costco to Cat Print. because I sell most of my work at comic conventions, where a lot of people are selling cheap colored copies. So the Cat Print prints were much higher quality and people were more concerned with the prints looking good and the paper stock than being archival. I don't think I've ever been asked about the archivability of a print at a con. However if you're are selling higher quality prints of fine art or something I can see where that would be important.

Hi Deb, I was a little unsure about what you where asking. Did you want to know what Costco charges for these services or what Cat Print charges? I know Cat print can do all of these things and they have an instant quote generator on their site. As far as Costco goes I think I pay around $4 for a 12 X 19 print and I don't think the price decreases at a dozen. I don't now if they do any printing an cardstock. They may send that stuff out because I believe all of their in store printing is on standard photo paper.

Really. I would contact them back. I'm sure they will correct the issue. I've used them many times and many of my friends have used them and been completely satisfied. The only time I had an issue was once when they forgot to cut some prints down to a custom size, but they corrected the issue without a problem

Unfortunately, they only accept digital files that can be uploaded to their site. You would need to take a quality photo of your art and upload that or find somewhere that scan do a scan the size of your art.

Hi Scott! new sub here. What paper stock did you use for your medium size prints? I have a paper sample pack from Cat Print and was wondering which paper you prefer? They look fantastic.
@ScottSerkland
@ScottSerkland 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Lucy, Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I used Heavy Letter Paper Matte. This is a bit thinner than most people like. I use to use Costco for my prints so I was trying to match the style and thickness of their Fuji photo paper as best I could. For my smaller prints I went with Heavy Card stock Matte. I wanted those to be a little thicker because its easier for people to flip through them at conventions. Hope that helps.

Unfortunately no. They are not archival. Which is really the only major drawback in my opinion. But I find most of the people I sell to don’t even know what that means and it’s not a deal breaker for them.

Someone wanted to buy some work from me and I’ve never made art prints before. I actually don’t know much about selling them or where to start. Thanks for posting this video, because I’m not really looking to do at home printing. How can I make a print if I drew it on my iPad? I didn’t really expect to get it printed but rather just drawing it for fun.

Your welcome! glad you found the video helpful. I have the hardest time getting my artwork from my iPad to my PC, but assuming that isn't an issue for you. you first need to make sure your art is print quality 300 dpi or higher and that you can export it in CMYK mode as opposed to RGB. Cat print accepts a number of file formats but I usually save my files as JPGs.

Speaking of your 3d art. Would love to see a tutorial on that. Just curious what color codes you use for red and blue. I used 100% cyan and 100% red. Ordered through catprint and when i looked at my print in my hands it looked like.....well nothing lol. I didnt realize how hard it would be to nail down 3d art when it comes to printing it.

I'm planning to print 60x60 inch artwork using a premium paper my question is how much will it probably cost and what type of paper is recommended. I'm looking looking for a thick matte type of paper. Also, if I want to frame it at that size any recommendation and pricing point will be? Thanks!

Honestly 20"x 30" is the largest I've ever printed so I don't know if I'm going to be much help to you, sorry. I'm not even sure if CatPrint can print that big. I think Costco can do canvas prints up to 40" x 60" and that can also frame them. I've had canvas prints done there before and they look really good, I just don't know about 60" x60"

I guess it depends on what you're starting with. I usually design at 12" x 18" 600 dpi and those look great at 20" x 30" I have blown up a couple of my older pieces that were 300 dpi to 20" x 30" and they look pretty good as well.
