During the Wii U‘s lifespan, Nintendo made the A button non-transparent on new Wii remotes that came in Wii U branded packages (those Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi-themed Wii remotes have nob-transparent A buttons as well for example) My guess is that Nintendo wanted the Wii remote to be more consistent with the Wii U Pro Controller and Wii U Gamepad which had no transparent buttons (opposed to the Classic Controller for Wii which had transparent buttons)

I played it way late but I feel like that game ended up on people's bad side by pure chance because A) people were sick of the formula and now people are practically BEGGING for it back, and B) the mere presence of motion controls. I think the reason why it fell flat was because there was only a select few scenarios that you actually needed it. Most of the time, the high precision ir tracking is enough, and it's really only when you need low latency (direct motion input vs tracking ir over time and deriving motion) or to track the angle of the wiimote about its long axis that it becomes relevant. Basically swords and tennis. Also, just a theory, but I have no doubt Nintendo incentivized games to include wiimotion support.
