The thing that baffles me the most is how this Wii, which was advertised as the "Family Edition", only came with 1 WII REMOTE? Honestly it wouldn't've mattered if they removed the GC compatibility as long as it came with at least 4 Wii Remotes so a family of 4 could all play on the Wii together out of the box, instead of spending extra for 3 extra Wii remotes. If Nintendo had done that, I feel like this variation would've actually seen some sales.

Pretty sure the idea of a “family edition” is just that it’s more budget conscious. Not that you can enjoy it with the entire family right out of the box. That’s incredibly dumb, especially considering that not every family is the same size. One family buying this console could’ve been buying it literally just for their one child, while one family could be buying it for all five of their children and the two parents. Even including two controllers is dumb because then that former family just gets an extra controller for no reason whatsoever and ends up feeling like they paid extra for something they aren’t going to use when the entire point is the reduction of features for less money.

Fun fact: They did NOT sell these types of Wiis in Japan whatsoever. They just did not introduce this one (RVL-101) there, so no Japanese Wiis ever have a chance of being GameCube-portless. Also, White and Black Wiis can be RVL-001 (GC compatible) or RVL-101 (not GC compatible). You can tell just by the logo orientation, but you have to be careful if you're in the market for a Wii. A Red Wii will NEVER be GC-portless as it was only ever sold before they started introducing the Family Edition-style Wii, and the color is exclusive to 001. He brought it to a friend who modded it, so we weren't allowed to set up internet on it (I think it was mostly him being scared of bricking it by Nintendo detecting a modded Wii than actual problems that could arise) we had over 800 games on a hard drive ! It was amazing. I went to look for that Wii recently at my parents house, they lost the hard drive and the wiimotes, but I plugged it and it works just fine, so whenever I'll get my paycheck I'll probably buy a knockoff pair of wiimotes and try to set up a hard drive with games, as my father told me all the important files for the mod are in the SD card.

5:58 this is just my guess but I think the reason why this is it's because with the family edition I've seen some models where it's basically an original model Wii motherboard without the GameCube ports installed. In fact where the GameCube ports go is a separate piece & if you remove it On some models you can see the GameCube port holes. Even looking at the mother board you can see where the ports were going to go. The reason why it can't play GameCube games is because of the disc drive itself. Not the actual console. I imagine you could probably add the ports to the console & swap out the disc drive with one that is GameCube compatible. It should work & make it a backwards compatible family edition Wii.

Even though it shows the GameCube disc on the disc channel on the family edition. The disc drive is the only thing stopping it from playing GameCube games. The Wii disc drives are interchangeable so you can swap it out & it'll work with no problem.

Yeah, this was a weird one. It's basically an early prototype version of the Wii Mini, but with the same form factor (sans color) as the original. But yet not as stripped as the Mini. Sort of like a "middle ground" since it still had internet compatibility and an SD card slot. But as you noted: People who complained about that already had a full-featured Wii, lol! So it was kind of like something for those who didn't care about the loss of Gamecube stuff for any reason. Like maybe they still had a Gamecube or didn't care about the games that had Gamecube features. This unfortunately did lead to some confusion though as some thought it "did" have Gamecube compatibility until they got a disappointing surprise. Some people were able to return it in time, but others found out too late and the return window closed. That's kind of an issue with console revisions compared to handheld ones because with handhelds you were usually getting an upgrade of some kind with a few exceptions while with consoles the aim is generally to just make it cheaper by removing stuff from it. Neither ideas are bad in themselves, but it's that lack of model revision consistency that didn't help matters.

The gamecube controller and memory card slots can be solderd back on. The only hardware thing stoping gamecube games is the disc drive. It seems the only reason it doesnt have it is to have a explanation for the price cut. Gamecube games can be played via nintendont (a piece of homebrew, intended to be launched by a backup loader like USB Loader GX or WiiFlow lite. If you want to use GC controller without soldering them on you can use a GamCube controller adaptor for Wii U and plug that into USB1 (the higher up usb port). If you get a third party Gamecube controller adaptor that goes to usb make sure it has Wii U compatability (eg via a switch on it or only supporting wii u). Also using a Wii family edition and a Wii U and a Wii mini upright will damage the disc drive and the discs quicker.

I have this version of the Wii. I HAD to have it because it's blue...that was my sole reason for buying it, otherwise, my siblings and I already had a launch model Wii.... I still have my blue Wii, still with the box and all of the inner-fixings. I actually used it a lot when I went off to college, left our family Wii at home, and I used it a lot until the Wii U came out a year or two later. I've considered modding it and getting some use out of it, it's basically been in the box for 12 years since the Wii U released, but my Wii U and its internal vWii are modded, so it doesn't even make that much sense to put the work into doing the Wii itself as well. I did fire it up a few months ago just to make sure it still works, though - since I think Wii's have capacitor issues if they aren't used for some time, seemed to be working fine. I thought about selling it at one point, but they really aren't worth much at all - even CIB.... I think the receipt is still in the box as well - which I believe I only paid like $90-$100 for it. This particular version in North America was a Black Friday/Holiday timeframe release for that discounted price. I think after that and for quite a while, they sold the blue Wii as a Skylanders bundle, you could only get them as stand-alone consoles without any sort of a pack-in for a really short amount of time. But even with that being the case, nobody wants them...they aren't worth a darn to anybody except those of us who have them for no logical reason. 🤣

My parents bought my nephew a Wii Mini for his birthday when he was 8. Mind you, this was YEARS after even the WiiU came out, but he was so happy with it.

I've always loved the wii mini's design, it reminds me to the mini dark hershey's my dad used to bring home I somehow managed to resist the urge to give it a bite the first time i saw one

3:06 thus was the wii bundle I bought as a kid, and got so many hours of playtime ou off. I bought it at the time for ~€100, so that's a pretty good deal for 2 games and a motion plus controller

Our family's wii was a Family Edition, which I'm pretty sure my dad just bought because it had "Family Edition" in the title. Just recently homebrewed it, same process as a normal wii. It was bundled with a Wii Sports/Resort bundle disc, with both games on one disc (which seems to be somewhat rare in America?), despite this video featuring one not bundled with a game, so I guess it wasn't all that bad. I don't know, this is probably my nostalgia saying "okay it's a solid wii, it's not THAT bad".

That's my definitive version of the SNES i don't understand the hate for it

It's because it was a really common console to make counterfeits of. If you try to buy a SNES Jr, you can easily end up with a fake if you're not careful.

People hate the Jr cuz it lowered the quality by removing support for the S-Video Cable.

When I was a kid I remember tearing the top plate of this Wii off trying to get to the GameCube ports lol

I use a Wii family edition so for a majority of my life I wondered why there was a small dark blue disc on the disc channel screen

Broke my white model back in 09, got this back in 2011, and hated that I couldn’t play GameCube games anymore. Had that exact blue model.
I love that the top comment on most Scott stash videos is someone making a scott-esque joke
