For your next playthrough with Ursaring, I see 2 comparable scenarios: 1) Quick Feet with Adamant Nature You'll outspeed any Pokemon after status and you probably will need 1-2 SD max to sweep everything. The drawback is needing 1-2 turns to set up which leaves you open to damage or hax 2) Guts with Jolly Nature You'll outspeed many more Pokemon and also have the attack to back it up, so you might not need as much setup, especially with Facade. Gotta make sure the Jolly Nature is enough to outspeed all primary threats Just worth considering because you may not need Quick Feet
@DisasterLord2 күн бұрын
You are correct on point 2, it may even be the best approach to shave off time if you map some speed ivs on your training Jolly with 184 speed ivs at lv 85 is 179 speed, enough to outspeed Charizard It's posible to outspeed Charizard, with a positive speed nature and abuse a status condition with guts to just sweep with facade/return and no set up moves, that would save a lot of time
@pokecomic2 күн бұрын
Oh Scott....the thing with Guts is so unfortunate XD. To be clear, I do think it's a good ability like most people in chat but with 130 base attack and access to Swords Dance the much better ability choice would have been Quick Feet to solve the speed issues you brought up from Crystal, something that's probably going to be even worse in this game. If you're unfamiliar with it, for future reference it works just like Guts but instead of increasing attack by 50% it increases speed by that amount AND it ignores the speed cut from paralysis. Hopefully this run doesn't run into too many problems but at the start here I foresee Ursuring struggling alot in the late game due to speed issues. Edit: Yep......That's about what I thought. I'm suprised Lance went so well but Red was brutal. I'm glad you know about Quick Feet now, not sure if you just didn't in the moment when prepping the run or discounted it but I'm glad we have the knowledge now to avoid this again in the future XD. I still believe in Guts as an ability in solo challenges though I take your point on the usibility here. For pokemon without sky high attack stats plus access to swords dance I think you'll find it really can help things along if you utilize it. Either way here's to a fantastic year and thanks to Scott, Shawn, and Eggceptional for all their hard work with Daily December. It really has been a treat to follow along with!

Also, a versus video for both Ursaluna/blood moon versus video will be interesting too given that Ursaring utilize both its high attack+Normal typing, and it’s movepool (elemental punches, setup moves etc), while both form of Ursaluna perfectly split the two elements that makes Ursaring success.

Ursaring is right on the cusp of outspeeding so many key pokemon that giving it a jolly nature (+speed, -sp.attack) will likely have it shoot up your teirlist. This is why nature is just as important as iv's and abilities and it's why I personally think you should choose natures for your first playthroughs as well, since for a lot of pokemon on the cusp like Ursaring, the second playthrough for some pokemon will pretty much be more of a showcase of natures being good rather than an improvement in gameplay (though this will also have an impact of course). Idk, just something to think about, I'll be here to watch either way!

Guts with burn/poison would be amazing for a solorun on a fast pokemon. Ursaring is too slow for it because it'll take so many hits. Raticate with Guts+Facade would 210 or 252 base power hits from a good attack and speed.

For the future you might be able to lower you IVs with berries and buy vitamins for speed(or whatever stat) if you ever get stuck. This would hopefully be a fast alternative to grinding levels. There is a reason professional battlers control the IVs so closely.
@misirtere98362 күн бұрын
EVs, but also this isn't remotely practical. Vitamins only work if the stat being boosted had less than 100 EVs in it to begin with. Anything more needs to be properly grinded on enemy Pokemon, which sorta defeats the purpose. What also defeats the purpose is how comically inefficient actually getting the EV berries is in HGSS to begin with. First off, the Qualot Berry to reduce Defense and the Tamato Berry to reduce Speed are effectively inaccessible, being locked to either the Pal Park (no) or the Battle Frontier (yeah good luck pal. go ahead, look up how it works. entirely impractical). The other four berries are available, but still at a very slow pace. The berries aren't even accessible until Fuchsia City in Kanto, and even when you get there you need the Shards from Rock Smash. Each Shard will get you ONE berry for ONE of the stats. Red for HP, Blue for Attack, Yellow for Sp. Def, and Green for Sp. Atk. This can only be done one at a time and each berry is given out alongside two other completely useless berries worth of dialogue boxes to mash through. And no, I don't mean niche, I mean *USELESS.* Out of the eight other berries, the only one that does ANYTHING in HGSS is the Persim Berry for Red Shards. The rest are ingredients for Contest food, which does not exist in HGSS. The good news is, because it's Gen 4, you only need a maximum of 11 berries to get an EV to 0 instead of the usual 26. The bad news is, 11 is still kind of a lot for how much work it is to get them, and this is all to facilitate Vitamins that, again, cap out 100 anyway, so this only does anything at all if your EV distribution is *cosmically* incorrect.
@mattgeffery85772 күн бұрын
@@misirtere9836 i mean it takes time, but it should still be less than grinding the league. Also the, apparently evs, will be whatever he gets from just playing. They will be almost always the same, which will be incorrect for some pokemon. If he sets the game corner because of rng, he should set rock smash rocks for shards. i dont think it will be the right choice most of the time, but some mons will be helped by extra speed/attack/spattack and not care about reducing the evs gotten through easily accessible berries. it is just an option for these i was trying to make seen. Finally the berries being only after fuschia city means it wont matter unless he is having issues with lance 2 or red. Just a way to get like 5-10 speed or spA/Attack points without needing to grind to 100 and/or double team to win
@misirtere98362 күн бұрын
@@mattgeffery8577 So the problems with this are: 1. How much EVs actually help 2. The magnitude of what is even capable of enabling this strategy The fundamental structure of EVs is that 4 EVs are worth one point in that stat... at level 100. This means a maximum potential of 63 points, going from zero to max, although it will always be less in practice as a consequence of the goal of this whole endeavor being to AVOID grinding to L100. However, that's using the full cap of 252. The full potential of what Vitamins are able to provide is a 20 point difference at level 100 (which, again, is less in practice). Thing is, you only get *that* much if it started at zero, which in an in-game playthrough, is never happening. You will inevitably have EVs in the relevant stats already, reducing the potential of using the berries to supplement vitamins even further. Assuming an approximately even distribution of EVs (which is a reasonable assumption given EXP gain isn't being filtered for specific ones), you would expect to have ~85 EVs in each stat by the time you hit the 510 hard cap. So even if you got 9 berries to wipe the wrong Attack stat clean, making room to dump Vitamins into the others, that's worth... four points. At level 100. Which the point is to not get to. So it's less in practice. Oh, and Team Rocket's numerous Rattatas and Zubats both give Speed EVs, so I would expect there to be a bias towards Speed to begin with, meaning there'd be even LESS room for the Vitamins to push that up.
@mattgeffery85772 күн бұрын
@@misirtere9836 At level 50 if a base 90 attack pokemon had 85 evs it would have 121 attack compare to at 252 evs in attack it would have 142, aka 21 points more even for a level 50 mon, this is without nature and would be a 42 point change in the pokemons stats at level 100. I am not saying it is going to be useful much, but there will be times when it allows not grinding for huge periods of time(like a 30 min grind to level up by beating the elite 4 over and over). It also would just allow a higher level pokemon to have more stats in whatever, say you almost have a damage range when already at close to lv 100. it can be useful, even if niche
@misirtere98362 күн бұрын
@@mattgeffery8577 I need you to understand that you can't get to 252 with vitamins. *It stops at 100 EVs.* Not levels. One Hundred Effort Values. Vitamins won't be able to go the rest of the way for four more generations. Wings won't exist until the next one. The only advantage vitamins can provide is getting to 100 if you didn't make it there naturally, and to not get so close to that vitamin threshold by the time you can get the EV reduction berries while still getting to the point where you need the EV berries to make any further progress is highly implausible. Anything further must be done by defeating enemy Pokemon. Which is just grinding.

Leaving another comment for feedback (spoilers below): -I don’t need to criticize the choice in ability because Scott made that same realization that he used the wrong one. What I will say about it is that Ursaring can easily get away with Adamant nature with Quick Feet; since it gives a 50% boost to Speed, a Pokémon would only need 127 Speed to move past Pikachu with this ability. -Facade is an amazing move. The TM appears in the Goldenrod lottery on Fridays and with a status ailment, you can not only activate Guts or Quick Feet, but also buff its power to 140. Having done solos in this game myself, I find that I can get away with being pre-poisoned for most fights (even regular trainers) and stay healthy with potions and PP restoring items (though I imagine on 4x speed, healing poison damage in the overworld is near impossible). Still, I recommend finding a trainer/wild Pokémon to inflict a status condition on your soloist for strategies like this. -Building off the last point, if you’re pre-poisoned to fight Red, you need to outspeed and OHKO his entire team if you’re not holding Leftovers; you’ll have just enough HP to survive poison and hail. -Defense lowering moves are a really good way to play around Roost on Falkner. You can lower Defense until you 2HKO it and then win, whereas Falkner can win if he goes aggressive with healing.

It is always funny to see how you try +6 first instead of +2 xD

I think by far the best Pokémon to use Guts on is Swellow in Emerald. It's fast, hits hard, and gets guaranteed access to Facade after being Norman. You can also easily activate it by getting burnt by knocking out Flame Body Slugmas

I think Ursaring absolutely needs a speed-boosting nature for better results; it's just not naturally fast enough to cut it.

to not get a quick claw in 25 attempts in a row is a 0.3% chance that sounds so painful

I hope you're right about this line, Scott. I really like these 2

I feel like if any series risks burning Scott out its this one. Also its probably not a good idea, but with guts I wonder if a sleep talk set would work for Red? You can either set up or hit them really hard while asleep, and I'm pretty sure you get the attack boost from sleep.

14:53 for slow pokemon like ursaring, i’d be interested to see how/if trick room can be used in solo playthroughs. (if it’s accessible of course)

From what I remembered seeing other people do play through of GEN four they were able to out speed so many of the AI’s Pokémon with things like maganium and mamoswine

Suggestion for future guts mons, pre-burn or para your pokemon on wild mons and use potions over full restores.

SCOTT fun idea, we need to see a race of your video editors with a pokemon of your choice in a game they both agree on

No surprise that Pryce was an easy fight again, Swords Dance is just too good, haha. I imagine he won’t be a problem for Mewtwo tomorrow, either! I loved using Ursaring in Crystal a lot, with the elemental punches and Headbutt/Return to great effect

Likewise by it was emerald in my case! mine had metal claw earthquake bulk up Hyperbeam

I’m a bit curious if earthquake makes contact and if that would’ve been a slightly quicker way to get passed pikachu

The issue with burn and facade was only in Gen 3, in gen 4 is fixed and you get the boost without the atk power drop. It's better than poison because toxic stacks a lot over time while burn keeps being minimal
@chicken_person2 күн бұрын
No, it was only removed in gen 6, according to Bulbapedia.

At the start of the video when you said you were going with Guts I knew this would be bad. Quick Feet is soooo much better especially because Swords Dance solves any attack problems anyway. I didn't expect it to need Lv100 though. Oof.

@HavenKhaos2 күн бұрын
Yeah choosing Guts over Quick Feet was a flaw, also not seeing the value in the speed picked up from pre-status vs the time lost from healing items to maintain the pre-status is the same as missing the Torrent/Blaze/Overgrow forest for the trees.

What I am going to predict is that HG/SS are going to be dominated by pokemon who can get access to good setup moves. They largely didn't change the level curves, so most of the strategies from Crystal are valid, until you get to get to Red who has been massively boosted both in level and difficulty. That one battle is probably going to determine more finishes and drive levels up more than any other final/secret boss in the earlier generations. The levels are substantially higher than any other final boss so far, so most pokemon just won't have the stats to completely it would boosting. The better movesets and importantly the hail are going to mean that you want to boost your stats are quickly as possible. If a pokemon can get access to moves like Sword's Dance, Bulk Up, Calm Mind, etc at a low time cost, it's going to massive improve their performance against Red. I suspect that we are also going to see a lot more use of double team overall.

To get guts to work you would need to find a Pokémon willing to burn you and then spend 90% of the game opening the menu to heal. Guts is amazing for solo run but not if you want to see how fast a Pokémon beats a run. Edit: Another way to get guts to work is to get the flame orb from the battle frontier which causes a burn on the Pokémon its equip to, if it to beat red i think it worth it as it allows you more flexibility in ursaring moveset. You could then get bulk up with a defense nature and rest to stall out the pikachu, and with the burn you wouldn't need to heal para.

41:30 Go with Jolly. It boost it's speed and lowers it's special attack. It's my goto nature for most physical attackers, unless I KNOW I don't need the extra speed. I usually need it, unless the mon I'm using is something like Meowscarada, a freaking F1 made into a pokémon. And even then, sometimes I've run jolly with the cat, because the rival I was facing was just THAT fast (read, almost as fast as Meowscarada, but with a jolly or timid nature). Besides that, yeah, quick feet would have been better here. In most playthroughs guts is much better, but in solo challenges, ironically enough, burn hurts a lot less than paralysis. About you being stubborn... you kinda were. Sure, the speed was a bit iffy if you were going to get enough to outspeed charizard, but the extra hp, defense and levels should have still helped.

Interesting thought - if you can buy effectively infinite Game Corner TMs, could you not sell them to buy Carbos in the Dept. Store? That might solve a lot of Speed issues!
