I'm continuing with my forgotten Pokemon series. This little monkey awesome, but I geniunely am scared to use it. Dark and Ice moves are special in generation 2 and Sneasel only has 35 base special. I won't get getting the same type attack bonus on many moves today...

I honestly feel like the Special/Physical split in gen 4 was one of the most important changes in Pokemon, and Sneasel is a perfect example of why. So many early gen Pokemon suffered from great Attack stats but Special STABs.

Yeah… Dark types in Gen 2 and 3 were a mess. Dark was classified as Special. And, most of the Dark types, with the exception of Houndoom and maybe Tyranitar (Who has 95 Special Attack), are Physical Attackers.

In Gen 3 some of the Dark-types which have technically higher physical Attack can make it by with special moves such as Sharpedo, Shiftry, and Cacturne. Crawdaunt who was regarded as pretty awful before the Gen 4 physical/special split actually has a respectable base 90 special attack, higher than Pokemon like Swampert. A lot of these Pokemon have catches due to not being available particularly early or being version exclusive with a Pokemon with a much more interesting type in the case of Shiftry. Mightyena I think suffers the worst of the Gen 3 Dark-types despite it being the earliest. With its STAB moves it doesn't hit very hard, and in practice its a mediocre Normal-type in Gen 3 without STAB on Normal moves. Absol has the same problem with slightly higher Special Attack, but at the cost of having to use Bite as its strongest STAB move (only base 60 power off 75 Special Attack), being relatively rare, and coming after you get Surf. Dark not being special focused wouldn't have saved Sableye in Gen 3 though. Rare Pokemon with a cool type that at the time had no weaknesses, and had a worse base stat total than the early game bugs like Beautifly and Dustox. It does have use against Brawly and Norman but that's about it. (Also it was a version exclusive)
@tylerd1297

@@CoffeeFlavoredMilk Good summary. Sharpedo was the only Pokemon with Rough Skin which meant it could switch in on Flail/Reversal and kill them without needing a Priority move. Old Pokemon design is so bad. Umbreon, Tyranitar, and Houndoom were the only ones matched with their stats. I agree Mightyena is useless outside of spamming Bite and hoping for the best 😂

It gets even better ice moves from gen5 onwards: Icicle Crash is more powerful and has a chance to flinch (which is nice on a Pokemon with as high of a speed stat as Weavile), and it got triple axle in gen8, which deals 3 hits and doubles in power with each successful hit. Yeah, it will definitely be a close one! Suicune doesn't have the stats, but its movepool is probably the most favourable, especially since it gets Surf really early while the other two have to wait awhile for Thunderbolt/Flamethrower. Lower speed might hurt it, but definitely out speeding most Pokémon anyways. Entei will probably be the worst. Only Solar Beam for water types and no great coverage, especially for a physical attacker. Raikou's in a similar boat, but probably has a bit of an edge because of the raw power of its STAB Thunder and Bite early on taking advantage of its high special. Only real concern for it in terms of type matchup at that point is Steelix, but hopefully Dig can help out there

This will be interesting. I believe Bugsy will be the first challenge, as Swift will have to KO Scyther before Fury Cutter does you in, what with Sneasel's pitiful defense Same for the rival's Quilava if you pick that. Miltank's Rollout might be troublesome, but you have Dig to cheese that one. You'll be fast enough to try to flinch-cheese Chuck, and Hidden Power Fight or Rock, for the Charizards in particular, would help a ton. Of course, it would be invaluable for the monstruos Bug/Dragon Venomoth of Koga. Also, if you find yourself wanting to skip Chuck's gym at some point in another run, you could heal in Cianwood and use the Abra from Goldenrod's game corner to teleport you back there if your PP manages to endure the strain of Jasmine and Pryce. Might have to save a TM or something to make it work. Restalk doesn't seem viable, and it's a shame Sneasel doesn't have Swords Dance in gen 2. Looking forward to how you tackle this challenge. To be fair, sneasel is extremely bad before gen 4 due to being a physical Dark / ice type ( if your curious / don't know why, dark/ice is special in gens 2-3 meaning it had no stab functionally )

@🎤 Meloetta VEVO 🎵 No, but given how low it's special is, i think its a safe bet to say in 95% of battles you're using slash over a dark or special move given your physical stat is almost 3x as high as it's special

Fun little tid bit about the Entei, Raikou, and Suicune. Once you make contact with them and they flee can look them up in the Pokédex and can always know where they are, beware that if you fly use the Magnet train etc, they move to a new location but after a while can figure out their move pattern and go find them.

Hiya, Scott! Your memes were on point as usual and so wholesome. I vouch for Crystal runs from now on because that's what I'm used to see with the Bingo Races Keizaron does. A good reason for your strong early game might be the absence of Fire types in Jotho. IIRC you don't really face anyone particularly strong before Lance with one of those since you can force your Rival, Silver, into pretty much any team. And get ready for that Stantler being one of your best races, I called it before and I repeat: this Pokémon is very strong! ps: I, too, didn't know about that Move Tutor in Crystal, so don't beat yourself over it, Bruno already did plenty of that for you.

I've got a story that tops your Raikou story. Pokemon Gold was the game where I had my first ever shiny pokemon. Which in my case was my starter, a Cyndaquil. The first pokemon I got in the region. I get up to the first gym when I realize that Cyndaquil doesn't look like he's supposed to in promo art and in the pokedex. So I go to ToysRUs and return my copy of Pokemon Gold, having my mom tell the store manager the copy was defective, and then I got a brand new cart with a normal Cyndaquil in it.

IIRC Dark was originally intended to be coded as Physical and Ghost re-coded as Special, but there was a glitch that prevented it. This is why Shadow Ball drops Special Defense despite being a physical move. For some reason this error was continued into Gen 3 as well.

Regarding the change for getting the watering can after Whitney, I remember seeing a KZbin video a while ago that briefly touched on what I think was why they changed it. Don't remember the full context of the video, but it mentioned getting lost after defeating Whitney in Gold and Silver because you can't pass the tree and they didn't realize for a while they had to talk to her again to continue, since you never need to do that elsewhere. So, like some other small changes made between versions and even for remakes, they decided that to prevent player confusion, they'd change it a bit so someone would tell you what to do. So instead of players getting lost, unable to figure out where to go and how to continue, running around to find paths blocked everywhere until they asked someone else for help or maybe stumbled across the answer by talking to NPCs, or even come across some glitch, exploit, or oversight that let them continue in an unintended method thinking its intended (like the Pokedoll oversight in gen 1), they just had to run the right way, learn the path was blocked, and be told how to continue. Personally, I find it ironic to find instances like that of players getting lost from a lack of direction their first time through, game developers fixing it in a future release by having an NPC help, and those same players then complaining about the game holding their hand. Yeah, sometimes their attempts to fix player confusion go too far and sometimes they try fixing the issue preemptively only to be told it never would have been a problem, but too often do they get told off by experienced players for giving the same help they themselves needed back when they were new players.

I guess this run was a big issue after all, wasn't it? Sneasel's move pool is good though it is a frail Pokemon, in defense and spc. defense. Due to its fragility it allows us a not very consistent run, a little resets are expected really! Specially against its type, the fire and even beyond the fighting type, that all makes Sneasel an expected one to be difficult to play with! You were very bold Scott! Good effort! Btw I prefer Crystal version! Thank you for the video! Had lots of fun! Until next one!

Scott as always great video, I love watching you doing challenges! To answer your question I think that the difference between gold and crystal is not so deep like between ruby/sapphire and emerald, where there’s also a huge difference in gym leaders’ teams, so I think that keep playing on Gold version is a better choice in order to not “invalidate” the times of previous runs IMHO and for my weekly suggestion I want to propose to you a Donphan vs Ursaring challenge let me know what do you think

I honestly struggle to comprehend doing anything without being able to read, I've been able to read more or less fluently since I was five or six, and my first video games didn't happen until I was nearly ten. I can really respect the things you did without that ability even if I literally can only barely remember a time I wasn't able to read fluently. And I'll be honest, even with the ability to read and knowing that status moves in fact did something I still consistently removed them as soon as possible all the way up until about three or four years ago, and I'm 25 now (also keep in mind, I've played literally nothing past gen 5, and that was all of like, ten or twenty minutes of Black honestly the passively moving sprites freaked me out a bit, and watching video of later games, the 3D ones are even worse for me). Even now, I'm pretty heavy on damage dealing moves unless I can set up a specific combo like hypnosis -> dream eater. I'm more likely to keep leech seed than I used to.

In the fight against Scyther, you should've started with Screech. No luck needed at all. Per stage of an atk boost(or def loss on the enemy), you deal 50% more damage. So 2 stages is a 100% damage increase - basically the same as attacking the enemy. If something is a 2+ hit ko, moves like Swords Dance or Screech always fit in. At 3+ hits, you stand to shave off a turn off the KO.
