You see, trapping moves in gen 1 were absolutely intentional, even though they're broken. Based on its gen 1 move set, it was supposed to either poison or paralyze you then keep you trapped in Wrap until you faint...kinda how venomous or constrictor snakes work in real life. Once it lost access to Gen 1 Wrap, it lost its niche entirely, and it's just been kinda miserable ever since. This is also how certain Fire pokémon were intended to work. I even suspect Fire Spin was supposed to be able to *CAUSE* a burn, which would have made it much stronger.
@hawkticus_history_corner12 күн бұрын
They just never really improved it's movepool. Why did it take so long for it to get Poison Fang??
@TheShinyFeraligatr12 күн бұрын
Fire Spin causing a burn would make it stronger for ingame, but arguably weaker against human opponents, since that would mean it unfreezes things.
@kikomagana199012 күн бұрын
Fire spin with trap, constant damage per turn, PLUS damage from a burn would’ve been too OP
@ZerglingOne112 күн бұрын
@@kikomagana1990 it's literally like the last fire move basically every slow growth rate fire type learns and Moltres, a legendary, doesn't even get flamethrower because they assumed fire spin was good enough. Again, just look at it less from a competitive standpoint, and more an RPG standpoint, and fire spin being OP like that makes sense. It was even called "the most powerful fire move" in the anime if I recall correctly.
@TheShinyFeraligatr12 күн бұрын

@That_Guy_Nee12 күн бұрын
This is definitely a problem Arbok has carried even into more recent games. In Ultra Sun/Moon Arbok doesn't have a usable Poison attack until Gunk Shot (LV 63) or Poison Jab (In Victory Road....which you'll reach around lv 62-63)
@TheShinyFeraligatr12 күн бұрын
@@That_Guy_Nee True, but it effects nearly every poison type in FRLG - pretty much all of them but Muk (who, happy days, just naturally learns the move), Venusaur (who is just generally really good), Nidoking and Nidoqueen (who have massive movepools), and Tentacruel/Gengar (who are Specially focused in general, although Tenta likes it in the postgame with Swords Dance as an option). Hurts Parasect and Tangela (who both have barely any moves) as a side effect too, annoyingly.
@That_Guy_Nee11 күн бұрын
@TheShinyFeraligatr I completely agree that it affects a lot of pokemon, but most of the others tend to have other things to make up for lacking that. Arbok doesn't and is arguably in a worse situation now than in gen 3. It gets Coil later on, but loses Acid in the phys/spec split, (in my opinion making the moveset slightly worse for a playthrough)
@ChrisG6676 күн бұрын
My only guess why they did this was for the “authentic Gen 1 experience” of most Poison types being pure ass in a Kanto playthrough? Though I’d have to preface that and say “pure” Poison types suck in Gen 1 cause most of the dual typed Poison types are decent with their primary typing.

HGSS makes sense for league rematches. The whole point of the challenges is to complete the game, which usually means champion. However HGSS gives you 2 entire games and sets of badges. It feels like it goes against Pokemons entire gameplay loop if you don't clear the elite four after a second set of 8 badges.
@welshlout340011 күн бұрын
It’s definitely an appreciated addition in the remakes, but Red was effective in the OG games as the natural final challenge after defeating the 8 Kanto gym leaders (with the last fought always being Blue). I think in a narrative/thematic sense Red is still the perfect final opponent in the remakes; it’s not exactly that the 2nd round of the league fills a gap in the original’s loop. What I think the rematches do best is this subtle addition to the canon: the league members in the remakes evidently field multiple teams that let them cater to the relative power of Johto’s and Kanto’s gym challenges. I do agree that it does at least allow the player to experience a post-game with more story symmetry to the main game ending with the league

Always thought Arbok was underated, i cleared the battle maison in Gen 6 using one as a pivot (to be fair a big reason for picking it was that i needed a poison type to use as a bait for my Zoroark, since the AI would see it and throw Psychics into it). Its stats sucks but it has really rare/powerful moves in the form of Glare and Coil, Intimidate is obviously a good ability and it has decent coverage in the form of Earthquake.

Just something to help a bit for rival 2, Scott, there is a hidden oran berry at route 3 where the youngster with a single high level spearow is, u do need to jump fown the ledge to obtain it but he is optional to fight while grabbing the oran berry, the extra 10hp may help a tiny bit during the early game Also, for FR runs, I strongly encourage to do a half silph run right after the pkmn tower section, the amt of free vitamins in there is so high that even if u do not need them they could be sold at celadon for even more cash to get other essentials u need for the lategame, plus u can do early training there since exp yield as u mentioned in a lot of your videos are decent for that section of the game. Do consider that for maybe the first playthrough since if u are fast it should not take more than 5mins when there are only about 2-3 mandatory trainers for u to grab all the high value items

Just a small idea I got that might be interesting for the stats readout of the pokemon, it might be interesting to group them instead of going in order. What I mean, is that if attack and special attack would be said one after the other, it would not require remembering it while mentioning the other stat as much to find out if it's a physical or special attacker. I think speed could be another stat with named after the attack and special attacksince it's the other important stats for an offensive orientated pokemon. Then having hp, def and sp. def together might make it slightly easier to get an idea of the bulk it has, and once again, no need to remember the defense while the other stats are mentionned until special defense to notice if there is a big difference between them,

Unfortunately, stockpile does not set you up in gen 3, so we only have double team. After that you do damage with toxic and one attacking move of your choosing. (Earthquake cover toxic imunities from steel and poison if tou want to spend the TM.) I don’t think I wil ever run this, but it has been a good thought experiment.

Funnily enough, I believe Venusaur to be the toughest choice for Arbok to face. Eventual access to Sludge Bomb ensures Exeggutor can go down easy in the rematch teams. Arcanine and Gyarados both have intimidate, and while Venusaur itself might not be very effective, its difference from Exeggutor is small at best (considering Arbok is a physical attacker). In fact, both Exeggutor and Venusaur are bad against Arbok at first - and both gain a way to beat it in the rematch. But Arbok can't hit Venusaur super effectively.
