Best car I ever had was a 1980 Subaru GL Wagon with optional 4 wheel drive. No computers. No airbags. Ran like a tank. Had a cool third headlight that would flip up from the front center. My brother gave it to me for free. I drove that thing across the US and back. On the way back I made it in 52 hours. There was no radio in the car, but I had a boombox. I even slept in that car for 6 months in the winter of 1995. In 1998 I parked it in Washington DC while working, and they towed it. They said I owed like $1200 in parking tickets to pay if I wanted it back. To me in 1998, telling me I need to pay $1200, it might as well be $12 million. They kept that car. I still miss it.

People with money drive something to show off, so they eat the repair costs the same way they pay hundreds of dollars for a pair of shoes. If you aren't actually wealthy, you can still flaunt like this, but it's a bad idea. I know cuz I had a luxury car once, and I don't think I ever want one again. I had a 2004 C230 Kompressor and it was a great car. I owned it for 7 years and had no major problems and it was easy to work on. Somewhere around 2012 is where they started to be a pain in a butt. The brake thing happens if you don't put it in maintenance mode, or whatever it's called, first. I think the problem has something to do with when you release pressure on the calipers, like it thinks there is a brake malfunction so it locks everything out. A Mercedes mechanic told me that you can put the key fob far away from the car for a few hours and that will let you work on the brake system and some other stuff without causing issues.

I had a 2003 Audi A8 with the 4.2 V8 I'm the second owner, the first owner had it for 130k miles and paid $70,000. I bought it for $5,000 in 2016. I recently sold it to my friend for $2,500 with 260k miles and still a lot of life left in it. All aluminum chassis and body on that model so zero rust after all those years. Most of the work over the years I did myself by using an Autel and KZbin videos, I'm not a mechanic by trade. Anything I wasn't comfortable with or that would be significantly easier with it up on a lift I turned it over to local mechanics. The repairs were very reasonable considering I never had a car payment on it. They can be great cars if you find the right one.

Had a an Audi A4 six cylinder that i sold with 225k miles. Have 2014 1.8t VW Passat with 190k that did give me issues and burns a ton of oil. I didnt keep up with maintenance as i should have.

Eh, it depends on the model. Some of these older mercedes cars were really good. My father has a 2005 e class with the om648 straight six and that car is pretty good. What Scotty said about the brakes is true though, you have to plug in your diagnostic tool and disengage the SBC pump before working on the brakes. Some people just physically disconnect the wiring on the pump, but from what I gather it is better to do it through the computer. I think it is also supposed to release the pressure in the brake cylinders if you do it electronically, although I'm not completely sure about that. As far as the air suspension goes, if you have it on any car it is pretty inevitable that you will have issues after a while. Those bags are always rubber and will degrade and have to be replaced over time. Pretty sure it happens on trucks too (or semis, as americans call them).

If you drive a Mercedes the real value is in it not failing in the first place and driving it for long distances over long periods of time, conditions you will typically encounter on the Autobahn. My family owned a diesel c class for 15 years and ran it for 400k miles without major issues. After that we sold it to some guy in eastern europe who is probably driving around with it to this day.

Do they really give you free oil and filters after paying once because they have "lifetime warranty"? That just boggles the mind, really doesn't make sense as a business model. On some parts which are designed to last yes, maybe, but oil? Just doesn't make sense to me they would replace expendable items for free, since they are meant to be worn out anyways. Heard this from several people, but I'm not from the US so idk. If it's true, that is an amazing deal.

Scotty you’ll think this deal I got is interesting. I just bought a 2004 Mercedes clk500 with 48k miles for $10,000. I did my research and the engine is the most reliable m113 engine and is the only v8 model available with conventional coil spring suspension, none of that hydraulic or air ride crap, and guess what, its buttery smooth! I made sure to get a non amg engine so none of that hand built stuff where they’re not all made the same. It is also made in stutgart Germany! The owners were retired and kept it in a garage with a car cover. It’s basically a brand new car for 80% off. Accounting for inflation in today’s money it would’ve been a $82,000! And it looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. I’m also a certified mechanic and build vintage race cars so I can work on it myself. What do you think, Scotty?

Part of the reason something like Jeep Compass exists isn't just because they are trying to capitalize on the Jeep name. It actually has to do with trying to offset the rest of the brands' more fuel guzzling vehicles (Wrangler, Cherokee) in an effort to get the overall mpg of the brand increased. If you recall a while back Aston Martin was selling a rebranded Toyota/Scion IQ as a $40,000 Aston Martin Cygnet because as a brand they had to meet some sort of new EU emissions target. I think the US likely has something similar with a brand's mpg and/or emissions.
