Personally with that transmission issue, I would just monitor it. I mean the worst is you need a new transmission or a rebuild (luckily this one is a geared automatic so they are probably easier to rebuild than a CVT). But I think it's one of those things you sort of live with and if it get s worse then you do something about it (sort of like what Scotty is saying at the end...) And it's not tripping codes or cause the car to act funny (other than when it occurs between 2nd and third gear). I mean it could be as simple as an engine computer problem, but like Scotty said, just live with it. I mean I drove a 95 Ford Taurus for about 3 years with a bad transmission mount and a bad motor mount. Never got worse, just stayed the same and if you accelerated slowly you'd feel the clunk from only 1st to 2nd, but it wasn't worth fixing and I drove it for 3 year like that (put about 80k miles on the car in that time frame).

These 05-06 ES330's are known to have an occasional hiccup on the shift, something to do with the trans programming. I've got one, it's got 175K on it, and it's fine - just the occasional funny shift when warm. Live with it, the trans is fine, just the quirky shift once in a while. Toyota and Lexus used this trans for ages, it's bulletproof mechanically. Just this series of ES's has the funky shift.

Scotty, the 6 speed transmission in my '07 Tundra would sometimes act up in Drive as it shifted from 4th to OD #1 5th while driving uphill. NOTE: I have zero service records for the first 270,000 miles, and I did have the dealer perform a drain & fill at about 272,000 miles... the problem continued after the drain & fill, so I changed the way I drive the truck. I take off in S-4, and shift into 5th manually as needed. This either solved the problem, or it hides the problem... the truck has almost 304,000 miles today. My point: Maybe changing how the vehicle is driven will extend it's service life.

My 2009 Toyota Yaris sedan I bought from carmax with 65k thousand miles on it has a similar issue. Once the “ cool” light turns off ( which shows it’s warmed up now) it starts downshifting fine between gears and the rpms drop. Read many other people stating the same issue about this yaris. My RX 350 from 2007 does the same thing . It shifts really smooth between all gears cold and hot however going from second to third gear it kind of has a glitch almost like it engages the third gear twice. But no jerkiness nothing still smooth as silk. Does it only when transmission warms up and cruising at low rpm’s. Once you give it some gas and rpm’s go higher than 3000 all gears shift perfectly with no double shifting between 2-3. Changed the oil , no improvement so I decided to live with it. The fluid is good red color with no debris on dipstick and I drove a lot with this issue. Still going strong , knock on wood. I have read on the internet that Toyota introduced the adaptive automatic tranismissions around 2005 era where shifting is adapted to your driving style. Maybe something relating to that

Those 3.3s used to be the SLUDGE engine too but... Only to those who never changed the oil. IF you used a good oil and changed it before 4,000 miles it was fine
@justacinnamonbun86582 жыл бұрын
I've had people talk all kinds of crap about Toyota engines and sludge buildup here on TY comments. Toyota engines are some of the cleanest engines the world has ever seen. This is why I tell people, yeah, check the owner's manual for the oil change interval but that's just a guideline. You HAVE to look at the oil at least once a month on the stick. I've seen brand new engines need an oil change from factory fill at 2k miles. You'll know there's a problem because your MPGs will be waaaay down and the oil will literally look like molasses. All modern engines with VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS (that have poor oil circulation by design) regardless of who makes the engine... If you look at the oil and change it when it needs to be changed (putting aside the interval) you will never have a sludge problem. Most people (especially women) are not car people and so makes sense when engines build up sludge, I've even seen practically brand new cars (2020-2021 MY) smoking out the tailpipe blue smoke. There ya go. Buy a brand new car, spend all that money just to never change the oil.
@GhettoWagon2 жыл бұрын
@@justacinnamonbun8658 TL and already know. Guess you never worked at a Toyota dealer when these engines were being replaced under the sludge campaign. Some were real clean on the bottom too but the cams, the head was gunked which was strange. I think they changed their oil sometimes but it was cheap oil. The 2020's era cars smoking bad alot of times are direct injection issues.

I bought a 2021 Toyota Highlander partially because of your videos. I hate the 8-speed transmission, it shifts abruptly. My 2017 Honda CRV with the CVT always felt great. It never down shifted abruptly. I cant pass anymore because of the pour design of the Toyota 8-speed. I spent the last of my lives saving on the Highlander hoping it would be my last vehicle. It is not the quality you speak about, our I paid for!

Very highly stolen, ( car is missing ) and have to spend alot of time with insurance company claims department, Not worthwhile to have a car that gets very highly stolen. The 2015 Ford Fusion had a cracked cylinder head at 22k miles never overheated, numerous misfire issues, numerous electronic failures. Our 2000 Grand Marquis had a shaking problem that the Ford house could feel , but were never able to discover what caused it. Ignition coils went bad typical Ford quality so you can keep your Fords and I will keep my Toyotas. Toyotas have never given me problems. The thing with the taxi drivers, they stay on top on the maintenance, and when there is minor issue with it, they get it resolved, and they keep it running million clicks on the Crown Vics, without having to do any major repairs, minor stuff if any work was needed to be done.

the best preventative maintenence for an automatic transmission i ever found is to instal an aftermarket trans oil cooler & a external "spin on" type filter on the return line to the transmission.& 40k mile trans fluid changes.when you keep an automatic trans cool & clean they tend to last a LONG time.

Hey Scotty BIG FAN HERE , I have an 04 Toyota Solara 3.3 v6 and mine from 2nd to 3rd slips then catches, But if i manually shift then theirs no problem ? I wonder if the trans solenoid is going bad?
@topherd10112 жыл бұрын
It’s possible. But not all that likely. Typically when a solenoid is messing up it will throw a code. Check to see if there are any codes stored in the transmission computer. You will need a rather sophisticated scan tool to do that. You might have to pay someone to do that. If there are no codes.. I wouldn’t change the solenoid ..but since it’s so old I WOULD drain the fluid, drop the pan, replace the filters, clean up the pan and visibly look for an abundance of metal fragments. If there are no fragments then just put it all together and put new fluid back. If there are fragments.. which I believe there will be.. make sure you clean up good, put back a mixture of mostly clean fluid with the Lucas stop slip transmission stuff Scotty talks about. Baby it and hopefully it’ll last you quite awhile longer! Hope this helps! Edit: if you’re going to have it checked for codes.. have the guy TEST all the solenoids. This can be done without taking anything apart. This way you’ll know for sure about the solenoids. It’s a pretty straight forward test..
