An aside to this: The water pumps often fail on the 3.5 liter V6 engines up to model year 2011. The later build date 11s and all 12s and later have an updated part that supposedly lasts the life of the vehicle, though the design remains the same. A relative has a very late build date 2011 Explorer with 230,000 miles and it's on the original water pump.

My 2014 Taurus water pump failed at 75,000 miles, I took very good care of the car expecting it to last for a very long time and that didn't worked. A design flaw can't be fixed with preventive maintenance, the water pump is going to fail sooner or later and in the worst cases could destroy the engine like happened to me.

Hello Scotty--I have one of those V6's from Ford, 75,000 miles and out goes the water pump. I caught it early. Antifreeze level going down slowly and could smell it. Coolant was getting past the first gasket into the weep hole not into the oil pan.. Over $2,000 later (at dealer), $500.00 for a rental car after dealer had the car for two weeks, back on the road. Had I known the water pump was inside like that I would have never bought the car. Can't believe anyone would engineer something like that. Poor Mazda owners that have that same engine Mazda was buying from Ford.

I avoided buying a Taurus because I knew about the internal water pump and the engine out service that's needed to change it. Chevy's 3.0 Duramax is now in competition with its belt driven oil pump that requires the engine to be separated from the transmission to change it and if the belt breaks before that, you're screwed 🤦🏻‍♂️.

Ford 3.5l V6 in a FWD/AWD Explorer: It has to be a major leak, one that the owner would have to ignore. It will leak externally first. I have this same engine in my Explorer. You do the timing chains and water pump at the 100k mile service like you are SUPPOSED TO, and you will not see the issue. If you are buying a used car with this motor around the 100k mile mark, ensure you see proof that the maintenance was done, otherwise plan on doing it or walk away.

I'm sure they've double-sealed the water pump shaft with a vent to atmosphere between them. It's commonly done in industry to eliminate the possibility of cross-contamination in valves - CIP in your milk products is not a good look - but it does need maintenance reasonably promptly when one seal does begin to leak (either the oil one or the water one, in this case).

Even bigger mistake: Buying an expensive gas-powered car. KZbin search "Tony Seba robin hood conference" to see a half-hour presentation explaining in detail why. For most people, the best option is an under-$15k (or ideally under-$10k) used car. A 2009-12 Avalon or ES350 is a fantastic and reliable large sedan alternative. A 2002+ Panther body (except for Marauder) is a great Ford large sedan platform with low and simple maintenance, and is cheaper than the Avalon/ES. Only three weaknesses: 1. The RWD isn't good in harsh wintry climates 2. If you have young kids in the car, after lowering the windows slightly to prevent heat issues, turn off the accessories so they can't accidentally raise a window when leaning against the rocker switch on the door 3. If you have engine misfiring, fix it fast to save the catalytic convertor

Ford in its infinite wisdom, designed the 3.5L to replace the 3.0L V6 and the only way to fit the 3.5L into the 3.0 engine space is to jam the water pump in the valley between the two cylinder banks. If the owner is lucky the first seal will go bad so the coolant flows out the weep hole. If the second seal goes bad the coolant spills down into the oil pan. Also, another common problem is that the bearings go bad in the pump so the impeller flies off causing all kinds of damage. It is a horrendous design by Ford. I owned a Fusion sport with the 3.5L engine that ran great but had to get rid of it before the water pump destroyed the engine or pay a minimum of $1700 just for the pump to be replaced. The warranties for the replacement were an absolute joke.

Yes, the ford 3.5 in particular. Even if the water pump doesn't leak, it's very expensive to replace because top of the engine has to come apart. A bleeder hole is supposed to take leaked coolant outside the engine, but frequently enough that fails to work as designed.

Eventually the rack gummed up to much it felt like manual steering but it didn't leak and the pump and lines were fine after replacing the rack and doing a full flush. The original battery lasted almost ten years. Meanwhile the oldest sister had a Buick Enclave that literally started to fall apart at 2 years old, the transmission went out and the timing chains eventually failed. As I watch these videos, I’m thoroughly convinced that GM has lost their quality over the years and Ford is constantly improving each generation.

Great large sedan alternatives are the 2009-2012 Toyota Avalon / Lexus ES350, and the 2002+ Ford Panther platform (excluding the Marauder). Both are very reliable and simple to maintain. The Panther platform is cheaper, but has three weaknesses: 1.
