I am a retired police officer and I was in charge of the police vehicles! Scotty is right our explorers like this would need water pumps usually just after warranty expires after 60k miles but they would have a lot of hours from idling, I figured it out by hours on the engine , the amount of hours on the engine compared to a civilian car at 60k miles was the equivalent of driving a civilian car about 250,000. Miles! And it cost about $2,800. to have dealer do water pump and timing chain! We had a deal with the town not to replace cars before 150k but these explorers were junk by 120k! But if not letting them idle and putting lots of hours they should last awhile! These modelsvalso had recalls for carbon monoxide getting in the cab! We had several people get sick, and put CO detectors in them!

Not sure why I have to mention this, BUT, starting with the Explorer, the water pump has a weep hole that leaks OUTSIDE the engine. So, when the water pump starts to let go, it will start leaking out the weep hole, you will see a puddle under the vehicle up front on the passenger side. Time for timing chains, tensioners and water pump. Also, you can also just do the same service at 100k miles, regardless if it needs it or not. Not cheap (unless you buy the FoMoCo part yourself and do it at home, can be done in a weekend in the driveway), but doing so will give you several hundred thousand miles of use.

The much loved Police Crown Vic according to West Virginia State Vehicle Dept. of records reported down time, service/repairs numbers model years 1992-2011 Crown Vic Police Interceptor was 2.01%, Taurus Police Interceptor model years 2013-2019 1.74%, Explorer Police Interceptor 2013-2023 1.65%, the vast majority of the Taurus’s and Explorers were Ecoboost engines. Roughly Ford has achieved a 65% share of the law enforcement market with these more dependable economical and much faster Ecoboost powered vehicles, compared to the old Crown Vic that struggled to maintain a 40% share. I remember when you would never trust a used car with 80k cause they were worn out, good ole days my Azz!

Full sized sedans started getting smaller and cops had to start carrying more equipment. The switch to SUVs was necessary. Our department switched from Impalas to Explorers. I hated getting stuck with an Impala. I'm 6' 2" 240 lbs. Driving those Impalas was insanely cramped and uncomfortable. It was difficult to get in and out if you were taller than 5'' 6" or so. With all that crap on your belt as well as wearing a vest, it was causing serious back problems. Also, we're not allowed to PIT cars. They don't even teach us in the Academy. Few departments these days are allowed to. Heck, there was an episode of (I think it was) Live PD in which the Tulsa police were in a vehicle pursuit that went onto the interstate. They are actually heard on camera talking on the radio about how the State Police are now part of the pursuit and they are actually allowed to PIT the car. There are few (if any) urban municipal departments that are still allowed to PIT a car. If you do it you are likely going to get fired. Best case scenario, you get a multi day suspension without pay.

Pretty much same story as my 08 P71, no cruise control. Although I did swap my steering wheel for one with the cruise control buttons, I'd have to have a Ford dealer enable it though. Hardest part is convincing them to mess with something like that on an older vehicle. Which axle does yours have? Mine is the X5, 3.27 limited slip. I got the car with 115k miles and 255 idle hours. Its a gamble buying a used emergency vehicle. If you get a supervisor vehicle just used as a take home vehicle you can get a deal but most, including ems vehicles are abused by long idle hours then followed by driving it like you stole it. As the vehicle gets toward the end of its service life the cost of a major repair is often a deciding factor to get rid of it.

I bought a retired 2010 Tahoe PPV edition in 2018 w/just over 100k miles on it, paid $7k cash. It was a former K9 vehicle, those are not used to chase and sit most of the times but idle a lot. It was beautiful inside and out after spending about $700 for the interiors (rear seats and all it needed to make it look clean). Changed the water pump at 120k miles and a bearing at 150k miles. New tires and oil changes on top of that. I then sold it for $5.5k cash 6 years later with over 188k miles on the odometer. No European car would have lasted that much that clean (I owned plenty while living in Europe in my younger days). It was still running perfect with that strong V8 although mpg not the best for city driving. Miss the long cruises to the keys with my family. Excellent, durable, solid and comfy vehicle with plenty of power and mean look. I would buy other Tahoes of that generation with the PPV package and they are easy to work on (AC delco parts are reasonably priced too)

Damn, Scotty, you stole my comment, about the advantages of having a cage in the car if you have kids. Sound? No problem, about a ton of DAP foam should make everything nice and quiet... ;D Police in Fairfax County Virginia are using Ford Explorers. They can hold a ton of stuff, AND they're a whole lot better chasing bad guys over open terrain. That being said, many police departments still prefer the Crown Vics. So, too bad Ford didn't come up with a 4WD or AWD Crown Vic, with maybe 1-2" more clearance. Oh well.

I'm a police officer in Washington DC with 28 years on the job (retiring in the new year YAY!) I concur with Scotty. I wouldn't buy a used police vehicle. They get the crap kicked out of them and by the time they take them out of service, they have one foot in the junkyard frankly. If the engine isn't worn out, you'll likely need a transmission sooner or later but likely sooner. Many of the patrol division vehicles are run around the clock rarely getting downtime except for maintenance and repairs. It is the same with a police motorcycle, HD or BMW, just like the Explorers, Durangos, etc., you roll the dice.

@KevinMitnickHackyboy2 күн бұрын
Timing chains would last as much as the engine if you do oil changes on time. Timing belts is different because is rubber and it’s not lubricated like chain. It depends on every vehicle, read the manual if you have one, but they do recommend to do at 80k miles for the original belt and after that every 70k miles. Don’t go cheap on those, get the OEM part and if you’re doing that job get the whole kit replaced, water pump tensioner, idler and belt.
