I had a 1993 Prism and it was a terrific car. The only repair done to that car was motor mounts at 200,000 miles. I sold it to an old widow whose car had quit. It had 216,000 miles on it. Literally gave it away. I saw it when it had 360,000 miles and it wasn't leaking a drop of oil and she said it ran like a top. Started in even the coldest of weather here in MI. After that I moved north and don't know how far that Prism made it but it was taking care of the old widow.

I won't go to a dealership unless it's a simple recall. The nearest one lied and cost me over $1000. I couldn't drive it off the lot, drove back to the service bay. They said they would take care of it. A day later, they said something else was wrong, and it would be over $1000 more. I told them to put it back together so I could drive it to another shop. Amazing, it worked fine. Without the extra 1k bill.

It's why my grandfather gave up his service station in his 60s. He didn't want to relearn how to work on cars that started to get computerized back in the 90s. Nor did he want to buy new tools to work on them. Dont blame him. Cars need to get rid of computerized head lights, windows, nav, brakes, shifting, traction control, wipers, cruise control... a few others. All those things are more reliable an longer lasting as a simple on off switch. No need for a Dell to decide how your lights work

I worked at dealerships most of my career , and a couple of "Tire stores". And I had to quit the "tire stores" because they wanted me to sell stuff that definitely wasn't needed. An example of that is if a car came in with its original struts and shocks, I was told to sell them new ones just because they were OE , no matter the mileage or condition! The dealers I worked for were never that bad, but a few mechanics were absolutely crooks!

Great video as always! Only thing I disagree with is the last question about the transmission fluid. I have a 07 BMW 328 with 290k on it. I never changed the trans fluid because I never had any slippage etc. At about 270k I finally started to have some slips and vibration when going from 2-3 and decided to change the fluid. I ended up not flushing but just drained the fluid and replaced the fluid with a newer dex and this thing is like brand new again. Whether it was the age of the fluid (probably) or the new formulas, this thing runs like new again and is smooth as it gets.

Was a little tricky and the part was only $80. Still can't believe Audi/Volkswagen made that thing out of plastic. I work at a lube shop and the push for sales is true there too. I've had management telling me how I need to sell more and get bigger payments from customers (especially the services which don't cost the company much to do). Between that and being put under the microscope for everything (time to cash out a car, sales, monthly service goals, heaven forbid I maintain a conversation with a customer after they've paid) I'm definitely looking to get into something else. Maybe soon I can focus solely on my (side) handyman work. Heck, I figured if I did oil changes myself and charged people $50 a change plus oil/filter at cost I'd save them money and make more than I do now. 20 cars in a week (we do more than that on a slow day) and I'd make more than I do working 40 hours a week for an oil change company

The manager said if we don’t do something right and it gets Audited you will be fired. I told him no thank you I do not wish to be certified. I think that’s crazy all the certification I have over the years they want me to be certified by Ford just to replace a door. I’ve put thousands of doors on in my lifetime

The rip off shops are rampant. Absolute thievery. The worst. My local Toyota dealership quoted $12000 to replace 2 front struts and tie rod links on a Lexus RX350 with 165000 km on it. After he saw the look on my face he had the balls to say " but the mechanic thinks he can do it without taking the engine out so it could be just $6000!" I walked out and dud it for $1000 Rock Auto in my driveway 3 hours.

One of my friends from work is a certified mechanic and has told me that leaving a little old oil in the engine isn't bad for it (like what we do to make those oil changes so quick). Personally, I still don't like the idea and opt for a full draining. If I did oil changes for anyone else I'd do the same for them (let it drip dry). 5:40 Nissan knows how to make excellent vehicles, they just weren't allowed to with Renault in charge of the money. Nissan had quality on par with (even better than in some cases) Honda back in the 90s before Renault got involved, even though Nissan struggled financially even back then. Hopefully Nissan can get back to it's roots of desirable high-quality vehicles now that they have parted ways with Renault, and perhaps Honda's money can help achieve that goal. That's my hope for the merger. I've had several 80s and 90s Nissans, Hondas, Infinitis and Acuras. They were all exceptionally well built and reliable. My current 99 Pathfinder runs great with over 300k miles and is my daily work vehicle.

Scotty, you are dead wrong about joint Venture with GM and Toyota. I owned 88 Chevy Nova which had over 440k before the head gaskets went out. Then I bought a 2003 Pontiac Vibe that lasted more than 600k miles. The clutch was wearing out but, the engine was still running good even though it started consuming oil. Used a quart every 2 tanks of fuel. (Did not smoke.) Now I drive an 09 Pontiac Vibe I bought used with 94k miles. Now it has 188k miles after 4 years of ownership. The Chevy Nova, Chevy Prism and Pontiac Vibe were made at the NUMMI plant in Freemont, Cali. These cars were built by great UAW employees. I thought GM made a bad decision by breaking up with Toyota in 2009. Scotty, do you have any suggestion on freeing the 03 Vibes shifter? I can't get the shifter out of reverse after I backed it in the garage. It has sat for a couple of years. It has a 5 speed with a bad clutch. As mentioned , the engine ran good before storage. I want to get it back on the road. Thanks Scotty.

I purchased a brand new 3.8L Ford Mustang in 2000. In 2008 the car broke down on the highway on the way to work. I had the car towed to a nearby shop that my wife found for me. The diagnosis was that the manual transmission was totaled. I had never changed the transmission fluid. I had around 75,000 miles on the car at that point. I paid $1500 to replace the manual transmission. I then drove that car until 2020, when it had almost 150,000 miles on it. I never had the transmission fluid changed, but I also wasnt driving too much on the highway by that point. I ended up giving the car away to charity, as things like the alternator died, the door hinge was loosening so that I had to hold the door to keep it from falling off, etc. The experience of getting my car repaired often was such that I found a shop that did good work at a fair price, who I could trust. I'm driving a different car now, and I intend to follow the suggested maintenance from the Manufacturer so that I dont experience a totaled transmission again.

With an oil change they tucked my front bumper under a skid plate without all the bolts for the bumper that they took off. Even a big tire place messed up my truck taking off my spare tire. Huge dent on the tailgate because they opened my tailgate while the tool was still in the slot to lower the spare. It’s getting so bad now.

If you're a smart mechanic, have the tools/equipment and have a space to work, just do jobs on your own and charge a reasonable shop rate! You will have customers up the wazoo and never need to worry about not having jobs! Don't do engine rebuilds or transmission rebuilds as they will take days to do and you might not have parts available for these. I would say that there are many jobs that are overcharged at big shops/dealerships that can be done relatively cheap at a private shop that only charges for the actual hours worked. eg. My 2005 Subaru Outback, 2.5i, they wanted 500.00 to do sparkplugs and another 250.00 for engine treatment. They wouldn't do the plugs unless I agreed to the treatment. I told them to pound sand and did it myself. It took me 30 minutes to find a video of the plug change, then 30 minutes to go get the plugs and finally 45 minutes to actually change the plugs without removing the engine or tilting it. The final cost of me doing it was about 70.00. Parts were 40.00 and 2 cans of beer were 8.00 and 45 minutes of my time. I would have gladly paid 100.00 for a tech to do it and that would be it, but, no one will do it for that. The world needs mechanics that charge rates that are within our pay rate... I don't make 135.00/hr., I make 20.00/hr. and that is what I can afford!
