The main problem with the 3.6 was bad heads. The casting in the heads are faulty and you’ll get a cylinder ... misfire code, which indicates you need a new head. They also have a little net/filter in the head that the oil goes through which clogs up and ruins the cams.

My grandfather was a die hard “Mopar Guy" and his last 3 cars were 1990 Ram 360 cu, 1987 labaron K car, and a 97 Plymouth Voyager. Those last two aged fast. The k car rotted out despite being garage kept all of its life and the unibody frame had to be welded. The only Chrysler product id ever buy from the 90s/early 00s would be the Jeep Cherokee, and even by 00, they wernt made with the same love as the older ones.

Must have been the 2.7 L engine. If you didn’t change the oil, those engines would fail. The 3.5 L I had went 280,000 miles. Still running but needed too much maintenance to warrant spending the money.

I worked for a dealership chain that sold Toyota’s and Chrysler’s in North Dakota. For credit challenged customers, it was easier for them to get approved for a new Dodge/Chrysler than it was a Toyota. Toyota Financial Services wouldn’t (and probably still doesn’t) entertain many subprime deals. On the other hand, banks like Capital One and Santander prefer Toyota’s over Chrysler’s on their subprime deals but the huge rebates on Chrysler’s make them easier to get approved.

The Chrysler 200 felt and drove like a real car. The Toyota Avalon is the only Toyota product that doesn't feel like a Geo Metro with an Automatic transmission. Toyotas are ugly and uncomfortable. They feel like you are trying to ride a lawn mower to work and your job isn't mowing lawns. Even if the Toyota (any model except the before mentioned Avalon and the MR-2) were free and came with free oil changes, I wouldn't want it.

I bought it for 800 and sold it for 400 and the guy I sold it to drove it for another 175000. Both were stick hatchbacks. Both got over 48 mpg. Drove them back and forth to work every day. All high speed interstate. 80-85mph sometimes higher. Mobil one all the time. When the mileage dropped to 45 it was time to change the plugs.

They convinced me then to never buy Chrysler again as the brand new engine was backfiring and running very rough but at least it wasn't ticking and knocking and stalling like the original engine was! Most of the problem with the Toyota was that the people would bunch the floor mat up under the gas pedal, then when the driver would press the pedal down hard the pedal would get caught on the floor mat and would stay there when you would lift your foot up. Easy problem to solve, 1. Hook your toe under the gas pedal and lift it up. 2. Turn the key off, pull to the side of the road and straighten the floor mat! OR you could just remove the floor mat all together. About 50 years ago I had a similar experience when the throttle return spring broke on the truck I was driving, instant wide open throttle. I just reached out and turned the key off, opened up the hood, found the problem, bent the spring to form a new end and was on my way in about 10 minutes.

I own a 2013 Chrysler 200 so I was real interested in what Scotty had to say about this one. It's hard to take this guy seriously when I have 115k miles on mine and it runs, shifts, and drives great. There is one issue without a doubt with these 3.6 Pentastar engines from around that time though. I've seen hundreds of these engines come into the shop for for coolant leaks due to a crap design oil cooler. My 200 was no exception. Had to replace it at 99k miles. Chysler definitely should have put out a recall on it. Other than that....its been a great car with plenty of power. I do not recommend the 4 cylinder version though.
