One day when was in the Steel Business I was working in my shop and had several 5/8 holes I needed to tap in some 3/4 plate steel......My partner took the day off so I made sure I had the tap but forgot he had the large handle in with his stuff (The one I had would only fit up to a half inch). If it were one hole I could just went slow and used a Crescent Wrench but like you said, you really want everything centered so you can really get a feel for it.....Well I had about 20 large hole to tap so either it was take the (Company) time and money to go buy one or make one....I opted to make one since I was a fabricator in a steel shop......Grabbed a foot long piece of 3/4 x 1 bar stock drilled a hole for the tap and holes for set screws and had an really nice stout tap handle made in less than ten minutes.........Looking back I wish I had keep some of the neat things like that I made or at least had pictures of some of that stuff.

Home made tools are awesome if made by people who understand the physics of the tool! Welders are natural fabricators. The dynamics of tapping a hole relies on keeping the tap handle straight and level, if the tap handle geometry is off it makes tapping so much harder! =D

If we knew then what we know now. My time making dies and fixtures involved a lot of tapping holes. The Maintenance/Tool & Die shop we set up had a heavy drill press with forward and reverse and a 3x4 foot table. Really nice for drilling and tapping die plates and risers. We also made process specific tools. Like the tap handle from a bar. Made to do a job. 😁😎

You talked about the tool hobby but I think your channel is much more, from toys to bumper cars, to tips that are useful in many fields, lots of interesting stuff here! I'm not a tool expert but I've used tools all my life working on projects, mainly fixing broken stuff (I'm a cheapskate too) Sometimes I don't get the best results but when i learn about new tools and techniques I get better results, for example, the hole in the end of most taps are there for a reason, use a tap follower in your drill press or lathe and you'll get straighter threaded holes. Sometimes I can't wait for something to break.

I have found that when you need that dimple in the back of a tap for a project, the tap you have will not have the hole! LOL Happens all the time! =D Thanks!

Your handy tap and die looks like it was made in Japan after the war. I have several combo fishing poles with lures in the same type of box. Your repair with j b weld came out nice. I liked the satin finish. Another crap to ice cream save. Good job

I have sold a few utility knives but have not sold the ones I have found with chipped tips. I keep those for parts to clean up other knives. I think some sellers don't realize that a chipped tip ruins the value of the knife. However, there are those sellers who do take advantage. Great repair.

The knife looks great and if you had not pointed out the repair I would not have noticed it. That first tap and die set was awful. It is hard enough tapping a hole with the tap centered let alone off center! Another great Mosh. Thanks for sharing this.

I just left Home Depot and they had a huge display of Crafteman tools. At first I thought they were Milwaukee tools. They are all in "Scoutcrafter Red" maybe I'm on the late bus but that was a surprise to me. I immediately thought Milwaukee tools the color and look is so similar to Milwaukee.

Great job my friend. Just completed a mild Resto on an 8oz ball peen hammer. Thick red painted handle, heavy rust and dinged up head. Scraped Handle, wire wheeled head, took belt sander to get the big gouges out. Then used my M12 polisher to smooth and polish. Didn’t want it to rust so I used my gun bluing on it. Looks color case hardened! Came out great. Thanks for the inspiration and happy new year🎉

Chipped and broken knives are pretty common. I watched Devon setting outlets by driving a Stanley retractable knife into the paneling by beating on the end with his Klein Linemans pliers. Then pounding on the top of the Stanley knife with the Klein Linemans pliers. He went through a knife a week. 😁😎

John...I do a LOT of drilling and tapping at work and these three items are a huge help. I got them on amazon several years ago. Gearwrench ratcheting tap handle-does both taps and dies-very comfortable to use if you have to tap holes in anything thicker than sheet metal. Brown and Sharp spring loaded tap guide and a tap guide block. A happier new year to all! George

Good one and those junky ones would be just right for me. If they don't quite fit, that's what hammers are for and there you go with an Estwing again. I still haven't gotten one but I'm getting there with the battery stuff. A drill motor to go with the impact. That's IT though. I like falling over drop cords. Happy New Year John CS and GBWYou!

I think certain tools really pop better with the satin look with lines same with cars and mattes or satin finishes as opposed to gloss or candies but other cars really look great in those one or two colors because those lines just pop almost right off the car or tool i think you nailed the finish on both the millers falls and the craftsman knives

That old Craftsman is just beautiful. This year did go by quite fast. Time to buckle down and hold on for the next one. At least I look forward to next year's video's! Thank you so much for all your great video's! It really gave me something to lookout towards and I re-watched a lot of them, they really keep up. O and I bought a vise, a Reed 206 R from I think the early forties. They man I bought it from helped me put it in my car. I had a little trouble getting it out myself, I put it on the scale today and weighs 66,4 kilo's, I think that's about 146 lbs.

Found a vintage tap set from the previous owner while cleaning up the basement last month. When I say vintage, I mean probably not as old as I am lol. Just a basic canadian tire mastercraft set from probably the early 90's. Which means it's probably ok quality wise. Better than what they sell today at least. So I have a basic set now. Also picked up a vintage two volume book set treatise on the steel square from the vintage used book store. Pretty cool stuff! When are we gonna get to see the SC Junior tool set? Lol! Can't wait!

My first tap and die set that I bought was made by a company called Buffalo and I think they were Chinese. That’s it had the worst Chinese him material ever I screwed up more threads and had more frustration from that set!!! 😂😂😂👍

Wow, Scout, that top hammer looks like my brother-in-law's pride and joy after I tried to pull a stubborn 20d nail with it. Thank God he died or else, he'd still be ragging on me about it. I replaced it with a decent Plumb; it wasn't as pretty, but it did whatever it was asked to do.

I just bought a cast iron utility knife that has a chip in the casting in the same spot. Unless I fix it, it's pretty useless as it won't hold the blade. The seller's pictures did not show the chip, not sure if they purposely hid it, or didn't know it was important to the function of the knife.

Needed to drill and tap some holes recently. Found a nice USA made set of drill bits and taps, but needed a tap handle. Went to Lowes and bought an Irwin (USA made), broke the first time I tried to use it. Very disappointing.

John, the Craftsman 850 turned out great. Did you just daub ( is daub a word? LOL) the J.B. Weld in and grind it down? Just hw strong s J.B. Weld?

Lloyd- Exactly, put on a small daub and sanded it flush. JB Weld is super strong, the point of the repair on this knife sees little to no stress so I felt very comfortable with this repair. If it was on the bottom of the knife I’m not sure. Thanks! 😃👍

Hello Mohamed! - That particular chip did not seem to be in a stressful area I have no idea why it broke in the first place. I think because it’s not in a high stress area the JB Weld will hold up fine, however if it was on the bottom of that knife then I don’t think anything would be strong enough to fix it. 😃👍

Inferior Tools of yesterday weren't chinesium, they were "Americrap" - AMT, Globemaster, Dunlap, and a lot of the mail-order cheap power tools (among others!). You're right in that we don't see them around because they didn't survive. But another key thing is that the cheap tools of yesterday were more expensive as a portion of income than they are today. If you had a 1$ tool back then, it'd be something like a 10 or 20 dollar item now depending on how old it is. And possibly as bad or worse than a 1$ tool today.

Im still a firm believer that there are tap and die sets meant for cutting threads and tap and die sets meant for chasing threads and folks just buy whatever because they dont understand the difference between the cheap and expensive tools

Usually sets that include taps are made for forming threads and thread chasers are mostly die sets. Personally I only use HSS... 😃👍

Wood boxes preferred over cheesey plastic with latches that break off...but the tap n die was junk

The wooden boxes from 100 years ago also absorbed moisture, and evaporated it back out to keep the tools from surface rusting. I think that's why machinists really liked those Gerstner & Sons boxes for keeping their micrometers, and whatnot in.

That can be done easily. I have set up assembly lines that built items according to the traveler. Changing to one of dozens of variations for each piece coming down the line. Auto makers do it every day.

That first tap & die set was a ridiculous design. I'm betting they went out of business very quickly. I wonder how many holes they caused to be screwed up. Literally. Someone told me that Craftsman tap & die sets of the 60's and 70's were actually made by Starrett for them. I have a set that is still complete after all these years and they ARE very high quality. They have lasted me a very long time. At the time I only needed SAE. Wished I'd had a crystal ball and got the metric set, as well.

Starret is #1 and Brown & Sharp is #2 IMHO. Big Box tools for the most part are junk. Anyone looking owes it to themselves to buy a used Starrettt on ebay - might be less expensive than junky tools.
