Gunn wanted to make the movie more adult as well, like making Shaggy and Scooby crackheads and Velma a lesbian (I still don't know where that comes from) because he saw that stuff on message boards. Thankfully he was talked out of that at least.

If I have to give the Velma show some credit, it helped give Scrappy redemption and is no longer the most hated thing of this franchise especially what happened in the end of season 2.

I said this elsewhere but Yeah me and my family used to really hate Scrappy Doo but I'm really loving his new character traits: making men uncomfortable in the work place due to potential sexual aggression/territory marking, then eating men's genitals off killing them, invincible, terrorizing military bases, and killing Mindy's self-insert. I didn't think it was possible to make him awesome, but now he's more bad-ass then ANY monster from the classic hack and slash movies of our past. Maybe he can even become a hero of the LGBT movement the same way other monsters have, but for his love of the male sausage LOL I did like his new character trait introduced in the movie where he's pretty much always just marking Daphne as his territory. Like, THAT's his personality trait. I think they're finally doing him justice and giving him an outlet for all his annoying little short-man syndrome rage.

Scrappy did have issues (his flatness and overexposure as a character), but a lot of the problems he is often accused of causing, were more due to the erratic and uncertain state the franchise was in at the time. Ultimately, I think it was a combination of weak characterisation and bad luck that doomed Scrappy.

Scrappy Doo in Scooby Doo Apocalypse starts off as a villain, but quickly becomes an anti-hero, and then eventually joins up with the heroes despite originally trying to kill them. If you like Scrappy Doo, you'll probably like his portrayal in Scooby Doo Apocalypse. He actually has surprising amounts of depth to his character.

I loved Scrappy growing up in the 90's and 2000's sure he's reckless, daring, obnoxious, arrogant, and overconfident for his own good and displays little concern for his own safety come to think of it, but Scrappy does have his fans myself included, he and his Uncle Scooby Doo were quite a team a duo, I really do like catchphraes Puppy Power, Let me at em, let, me at em, and Put em up, put em up, those catchphrases are iconic with Puppy Power being the most famous and iconic of the 3 catchphrases, and I like the times where he does save Scooby and the gang at times besides trying to fight off monsters, and he does show his loyalty and love for his uncle when you see him and think of him in a positive light, and he's has a part in the history of the Hanna-Barbera cartoons next to his Uncle Scooby Doo, those bumpers that Cartoon Network made that mocked Scrappy made me sad, and angry and I hated those bumpers, and I hated that Warner Bros made him the main villain of the first live-action Scooby Doo movie in 2002, I do understand the negativity and criticism against him but this is too much, I hope that one day someone would do better with his character, and I would love to see a Puppy Power resurgence, a character that I do consider to be the the most hated and more hated then Scrappy is Allen Gregory from the short-lived Fox cartoon Allen Gregory which first aired in 2011, and a lot of you may agree why when you look back at that God awful show today, 7 year old Allen Gregory acts more like a grown up than a child, too smart for his own good, does not fully understand the world or anyone, extremely rude, disrespectful to his teacher, and worst of all underage drinks, and most worst of all has hots for his principal who's in her 80's which I find disgusting and wrong and he may have something wrong with him, I'm glad that Fox took down that show after 7 episodes, and it's a mistake that Fox had left behind and should stay buried and erased, and sometimes it makes me wonder what was Fox thinking, I'm glad that Scrappy is nothing like that, the problem with him is he constanly picks fights with monsters despite being defenceless and putting the rest of the gang in danger without learning from his mistakes, and come to think of it that is something someone should fix in his character.

Someone even once suggested that, if they had wanted to bring a character back as the main villain in the live action movie, Red Herring might be a better choice; after all of the years of the gang suspected him of being the guilty party and him never being, he finally was. I like Scrappy too and I like Chris Thorndyke from Sonic X and seriously those two misunderstood characters deserve better than the stupid hate they're getting. If it wasn't for Scrappy we wouldn't have Scooby Doo On Zombie Island Courage and Scooby Doo Straight Outta Nowhere Scooby and The Witch's Ghost and others. And if it wasn't for Chris Sonic would've drowned and Sonic and his friends would've been falsely arrested and locked up just because they're different and he helped Cream and Cheese from being experimented on in Area 99 and they be on the run hiding so much from The Government too. Elise also saved Sonic's life too and if it wasn't for humans Shadow wouldn't exist at all and Sonic and his friends also are each connected to the humans they saved. Eggman can't be the only human.

Always luved scrappy when I was a kid. Why? Cos he was so small and a kid, but he had guts, strength and confidence of character. Which as a shy quiet slightly insecure child, I lacked. I was more like shaggy and scooby. Scrappy inspired me to be stronger mentally, kinda like super heroes did at that time in my life. Yes, his character arc is slightly arrogant, but you cant knock his fearless stance. I think his strong hero character was just put into the wrong cartoon, he just didn't fit well with the other characters. But I loved watching this cartoon character, so stuff the haters ever where.

Excellent video. Hating Scrappy was a young adult Gen X bonding experience whose sell date is long past. The Scrappy villain in Scooby-Doo '02 tarnishes and dates the movie; children who enjoyed Scrappy were upset while the character has no resonance for those unfamiliar with Scrappy. The only people who it's for were cynical Gen Xers like me and I've long since gotten over any antipathy towards Scrappy. People forget that after a few years the character's abrasiveness was toned down considerably and he's tolerable and even likable in 13 Ghosts and Ghoul School, among the best Scooby series and movies respectively.

In the recent documentary about Barney the dinosaur and the hatred he caused, they interviewed a father who had started an anti-Barney movement in the early days of the internet and he admitted that he realized that it wasn’t Barney that was the problem, it was his failing marriage and his fear of being a failure as a father. Also, in the recent CGI-animated Grinch film (which is probably like what you said about Star Wars in bringing it up lol), the Grinch admitted in the end that he realized that it wasn’t Christmas that he hated, it was being alone. All in all, terriffic video! It’s way past time for WB to stop fueling the fire on the hatred for Scrappy because not only is having Scooby and the gang constantly roasting him out of character for them but it also basically teaches kids that bullying is okay

Scooby Doo needed Scrappy then and they need him NOW!!! The franchise is running out of ideas. And as screwy as Scoob was, a cinematic universe of Hanna Barbera cartoons is an awesome idea if done correctly. But with or without their shared universe plan, the franchise needs to evolve, especially if Scoob is gonna have sequels. And what better way to do it than to have the next generation aspire to be like Mystery Inc. Scrappy symbolizes that idea and I wish Warner Bros would do better with this character than pander to the character's hatedom. My thing is, I like the Scooby Doo formula. I like mysteries. I wouldn't mind having a more sophisticated mystery element and the rest of it kept the same. I'd rather have something like Mystery Inc instead of Scoob. The thing is, the Scoob idea was a bit silly to me. Putting Scooby Doo, one of the realistic acting cartoon which the premise of "this is how this monster was done using vague science, with Dick Dastardly, a character who regularly survives air plane crashes on a daily basis, is jarring to me. Perhaps Dick Dastardly and the other cartoons such as Yogi and Huckleberry would be fine. Or one where its Scooby Doo and Speed Buggy or Jose and the Pussycats. But not Dastardly and Scooby. Besides, I find that cinematic universes just don't tend to work well. Only ones that do is the Marvel Universe (carefully planned) and the original Universal Monster mash movies ("what's continuity? I just want monsters fighting"). Also, I've seen first hand what happens when you change the formula a bit too much. Its how you get a Phantom of the Opera that was raised by rats, has telekinesis and whose face was perfectly normal. Which is the most hated adaptation of the story ever.

The thing that always bothers me about the most recent iterations of Scooby Doo is the way they deal with Daphne, Fred and Velma. With Daphne it feels like they're always pointing out how she was this "useless damsel in distress" who is always getting captured and had to be rescued, and are trying to make her more useful. However, I honestly don't remember her being captured at all. Or at least not as much as they're claiming she was. The only thing I remember about her was that she was a bit clumsy or unlucky; always falling through trapdoors or accidentally setting off the gangs traps for the monster, earning her the nickname "Danger-Prone Daphne", but that's not the same as being a "useless damsel!" With Velma, in some versions she seems way too cynical; almost like she just doesn't want to be there. Which is a big contrast to her in the original series where she is excited to be solving mysteries with her friends. Isn't her catchphrase "Jinkies!" Surely that wouldn't be uttered by someone who'd rather be elsewhere! As for Fred, they just seem to portray him as the big-headed, pretty boy, doofus! Particularly in the live action versions for some reason. And I can understand the argument; people seem to think that in the original series they had little to no personalities (after all, isn't that the main reason that they all got replaced by Scrappy? Because they just didn't stand out as much!) However, I honestly don't think that treating them like jokes, or parodies of themselves is necessarily an improvement. And I hate the idea that people look at this stuff and go "Well at least it isn't Crappy ol' Scrappy Doo! Anything has got to be better than that, right?" Seriously?

Such a good video, 30:43 actually made me shead a tear 🥲 the hate the character got was definitely blown out of proportion (since he's the very reason why it is still relevant today) As a kid i never drew the conclusion that Poochie was a direct reference to Scrappy-Doo, but looking back on it now, that brief bit at the end of the Poochie episode when they're were watching classic itchy and scratchy then they got bored and changed the channel made me realise that things never get interesting if you resume from where you started. At least he has got his redemption arc in Velma Season 2

Am I the only one who liked both scrappys? I loved him as a hero, but I loved him as a villain. I think they should bring him back in the show as a villain. A new show. The show begins with scrappy being a supporting villain. In the first episode it should be stated he has been fighting them for a long time. They holster go into clack back in how Scrappy used to be apart of the gang, but no one took him seriously. The gang cared for him, but everyone saw him as a joke. Growing up scrappy was becoming more egotistic and cruel. He later became a villain. It’a kinda like how the movie protrayed him, but the series takes way into the future. They could redeem him later on in the series.

If they make a dvd movie (as if scooby doo doesn't have enough movies) with scrappy I think they should reboot the whole scrappy origins to this: When he was a small puppy he used to hear a lot of his uncle's advcentures and looked up to him thinking that his uncle was like a super hero and would also want to meet him one day, which leads up to the movie's part of scrappy's life. The movie is about how scrappy visits scooby doo and his gang. The movie would somehow be with scrappy finding out that his uncle's not the way he thought he was leading to a scene where scooby does something (probably saving his life) that makes scrappy feel happy for scooby being his uncle. And the movie ends with a hint of a new scooby doo show with scrappy in it just like old times. Also the movie does have a mystery for those wondering. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

I really liked this video, especially at the end. From what I remember from my childhood, he was a good part of it. His energy can be much, but his heart is in the right place. I even admire his bravery and diligence as something I want in myself at times, as I see him as my opposite. I remember specifically Scooby Doo and the Ghost School, Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo and The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries. The first one was my favorite. Actually, Scrappy in Scooby Apocalypse is a Venom-type anti-hero, initially wanting to kidnap Velma and kill Scooby, but ultimately becoming family with Scooby and monster-fighting partners with Daphne. And the showrunners for Be Cool, Scooby-Doo have gone on record saying that if the show had gotten renewed for a 3rd season, they were planning to redeem Scrappy in fans' eyes by giving him an arc in the show. Combined with the fact that he was originally in play for Curse of the 13th Ghost, and I think the Scooby franchise is gearing up for a Puppy Power resurgence. But that's just my guess.

The show begins with scrappy being a supporting villain. In the first episode it should be stated he has been fighting them for a long time. They holster go into clack back in how Scrappy used to be apart of the gang, but no one took him seriously. The gang cared for him, but everyone saw him as a joke. Growing up scrappy was becoming more egotistic and cruel. He later became a villain. It’a kinda like how the movie protrayed him, but the series takes way into the future. They could redeem him later on in the series.

I will admit I thought Lennie Weinrib's Scrpapy-Doo was pretty annoying, and Don Messick's Scrappy is easier to listened to. I tolerated him the most in those three Hanna-Barbera Superstars TV movies from 1987-88. Now who I REALLY disliked as a kid was Corporal Capeman on the second season of "Inspector Gadget!"

The whole “Everybody Hates Scrappy-Doo” phenomenon is a classic example of internet hyperbole. Yes, I totally understand why people (at least the original Scooby-Doo fans from the late 70 and 80s) would have ill-will towards him. Scrappy Doo is a classic example of a kid-appeal character who barged in and stole screentime away from the original main characters, this has happened countless times in media, but besides all those Scrappy bashers ignoring the character’s inception and how it actually saved Scooby-Doo from going under, the amount of hate the character gets is ridiculous for a number of reasons. For one thing, I just can’t stand all those hyperbolic assholes who can’t express their dislike of something in a constructive way. They can’t say “I don’t like Scrappy. I found him annoying because this and that…”, instead, they have to say things like “I fucking hate Scrappy! Death to that demon spawn puppy! He was the worst thing since Hitler!” That sort of attitude is just a breeding ground for dumb, vapid, unproductive discussions, or worse. Going back to Scrappy hijacking the show from Mystery Inc, yes. That was very much the case back in the 80s, but here’s the thing. It’s not the 80s anymore! It’s the 21st century and Scooby-Doo is now a huge franchise and has spawned a ton of reboot series and countless movies, among other things, all of them starring Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne, with little to no Scrappy. Fans, both young and old, and especially the younger ones, have absolutely no valid reason to harp on Scrappy, he has not been a part of the franchise since the late 80s, and the threat of him taking over the franchise ceased three decades ago. Scrappy hate is now just a meme on life support, with no purpose. There are plenty of “bad characters” from more recent shows or shows that are currently running that are worth discussing and criticizing, but Scrappy is clearly not one of them. Furthermore, the original five weren’t exactly great characters either, at least not in their original conception. Like a lot of things from Hannah-Barbara, they were paper-thin cutouts and their shows was nothing if not vapid and formulaic. Again, those who think Scrappy’s introduction caused a massive decline in quality are viewing the show through rose-tinted glasses, a classic case of nostalgia bias. It’s not like Scooby-Doo was a paragon of complex, innovating writing and character development that got derailed into brainless kiddy fare once it started putting more focus on Scrappy’s misadventures. And again, that was in the 80s! If you seriously have an axe to grind with Scrappy, that could only mean two things; either you’re a middle-aged person who watched the “Scrappy era” of Scooby-Doo during the 80s, or watched reruns of it in the 90s, and you’re bemoaning an irrelevant topic from a bygone age, or you’re one of those aforementioned hyperbolic assholes who just goes “monkey see, monkey do” and mindlessly follows whatever trend seems popular on the internet, instead of trying to be constructive and form your own opinion, instead of parroting other people’s opinions. But the original blandness of the show and its characters is what allowed future installments to do great things, because there was so little lore to the original Scooby-Doo series, that later writers had free reign to pretty much do whatever they wanted, as long as they kept the base concept of Mystery Inc solving mysteries, Velma being smart and Shaggy and Scooby being scaredy-cats who always have the munchies. It’s a basic matter of concept versus execution. Much like the original five, Scrappy is not CONCEPTUALLY a terrible character, because like the former, he was a very one-dimensional and gimmicky character, who was defined by just two traits; being boisterous and idolizing his uncle. I don’t think it would be very hard for any writer worth a damn to take that basic concept and make Scrappy into a more engaging and likable character, as long as they use him sparingly and don’t have him take over the show. Few things are bad on a conceptually level, and people who think otherwise, that a character is just “inherently bad”, clearly have a fundamental misunderstanding of how writing fiction works. It’s not even that I’m clamoring for Scrappy to return but when looking at the reasoning for why this character became so infamous and why he was completely disowned by the franchise, and turned into a memetic punching bag, it’s a sad, sad example of writers and execs being cowed into submission by hyperbolic nobodies on the internet throwing a fit over a character whose heyday was in the 80s. The franchise had been doing fine without him, but what’s the point of all the Scrappy hate anymore? It’s just beating a dead horse, a horse that’s been dead since at least 2002. Speaking of which, those live-action Scooby-Doo movies had plenty of issues, but what the first one did with Scrappy? It was hilarious, if for all the wrong reasons. Watching Scrappy’s portrayal there, I was amazed how his depiction seamlessly checked off all the tropes of bad fan fiction villainizing the one character the author does not like. If this movie had been PURE parody, that “twist” might have worked, but even so, it was pulled off in the cheapest and most contrived way imaginable, making you think that James Gunn thought that Scrappy’s “inherent loathsomeness” as a character would just make people gloss over the poor writing (which, let’s not kid ourselves, was obviously the case) because “Lol! We acknowledge that Scrappy sucks!” I’ll admit, in a better-written movie, that idea MIGHT have worked and could have been a clever bit of meta-commentary (though again, preferably in a movie that leaned towards parody or at least heavy meta-humor), but like everything else in that steaming pile of shit, its execution was about as graceful and subtle as a hippo with a sledgehammer XD Shallow pandering at its finest, even though most kids in 2002 probably had (at best) a vague familiarity with Scrappy as a character.

I just discovered your videos through this episode, and I can't wait to binge the others and see what else you have in store! I love the hopeful and positive, yet analytical angle of your videos. There's too much negativity out there, and while I'm not one to spread bile and vitriol around the internet, I am too often victim to letting my anger get the best of me in my own mind. Thank you for providing a positive corner of KZbin where I can stop and really think about things, and possibly understand where people's hatred for things might come from instead of just writing them off altogether. On the topic of Scrappy Doo in particular, as a child of the 80's, when I first discovered Scooby Doo, Scrappy was already a thing. I think I probably alternated watching episodes with and without him in it depending on what was in syndication. Because of this, he never felt like an invading force to me, and was just a part of the world. I don't think I ever found him annoying or abrasive as a child either. I think I admired his courage and probably rolled my eyes at Shaggy and Scooby's fear. To be completely honest, I probably identified more with the fear aspect and wished I could be more like Scrappy. Thank you for giving him his due!

Wow; great treatment of the subject! (Saw the hatred from the beginning, and you showed EVERYTHING, including stuff I hadn't seen before, like his guts being ripped out, etc. People were just sick!) I always noted the irony of the SDMI reference, and he was supposedly hated for "changing the show", but that same series has Fred trying to play an eight track cartridge on a record turntable. In other words, he was a total idiot (Something that never fully wore off from A Pup Named Scooby, which was basically a parody show, rather than returning to true form after Scrappy, as people seemed to think). It became clear that people were dumping what Jung would call "the Shadow" on him, but I never could figure out why. When first introduced, I wasn't impressed, and he started the same year as Baby Plasticman and Fang Puss, and right after Godzookey and Gleek (So Scrappy wasn't actually the first), all annoying and unnecessary little additions (Gleek being FAR more troublesome than Scrappy, and the others just overkill, to still new series), so I couldn't figure what was the big deal with Scrappy. But you explained it well. (It's time they just quit with this stuff already. Even the new series has guest star Christian Slater take a mild shot at him! Meanwhile, it should be pointed out that one of the original ideas for the star of the show, besides a great dane, or a sheep dog, was a "small feisty pup". This may well have been what was 'dusted off' as Scrappy!)

I did not mind Scrappy Doo's first season 1979, it still had the whole gang, Scrappy Doo received a redemption in 13 Ghosts 1985, he was not the most disliked character. However, I am sure we will get a Red Herring cameo before we see Scrappy again, even though I like Red Herring.. I always liked the Great Gazoo as well. He gets much hate as well. I did not see the Great Gazoo mentioned in the What Were They Thinking Book or The Smurfs Season 9 1989 when they were sent in time.

As a chid, Scrappy was my favorite character due to his energetic and fearless nature. It made him the opposit of me at that time. He was what I wanted to be. So when I entered the internet and found out how despised he was, it was a real culture shock for me. The only thing I can liken it to was when I found out how despised the Prequals and George Lucas where back then (before everything said about the Prequals and George Lucas was changed to refer to the Sequals and Kathleen Kennedy). I never hated Scrappy. To this day, I like him. But I'm happy if he never appears again just so the flames of rage that have died down to ignorable levels in recent times to peak up again allowing poor old Scrappy to rest in peace.

I've been thinking about becoming a content creator but I've been struggling with what kind of content I want to create since KZbin is bloated with self-entitled, smug "critics", or with fans that only react to new content either following trends or in an extremely subjective note that does not do anything for anyone else. I don't hate Scrappy at all! In fact I want him to come back and be adjusted to be made more likable! Scrappy deserves a second chance to be made more likable and he should be a recurring who comes back every now and then to help the game with mysteries (along with Scooby-Dum, Yabba-Doo, the other Doos, Madelyn Dinkley, Flim-Flam, and the Hex Girls!). There are a lot of ideas for future Scooby-Doo media that would be fantastic to include Scrappy in, and there WERE movies where Scrappy was likable (such as the Ghoul School, the Boo Brothers, and the Reluctant Werewolf).This irrational hate of Scrappy has got to stop! If you think about it, Scrappy is MILD compared to the annoying garbage we'll end up seeing in the future. For example, take a look at Sparky from Fairly Odd Parents. He's essentially embodying an already established joke but doing them in a worse way. And while Poof from FOP does have several similarities to Scrappy in more ways than one (young characters meant to reignite the series), but Scrappy at least did something than doing nothing when got nothing to do in a scene. Speaking of, Billiam once said that, watching Scrappy's era, you're gonna hate Scooby and Shaggy as much whenever you're gonna hate Scrappy.

@@rhys171 I vaguely remember that one of the main antagonists of Mystery Incorporated was Professor Pericles, the parrot. In my headcanon, I always thought that he was the true counterpart to Scrappy. Scrappy has his catchphrases, Pericles has his german words and expressions. Scrappy thinks he can defeat enemies who may be more powerful than him, Pericles dies by confronting an enemy who was more powerful than him. Scrappy is criticized for replacing the gang, Pericles went from being the mascot to supplanting/replacing every role in his group. Scrappy is a pint-sized powerhouse, Pericles is a pint-sized powerhouse. I would have liked to see a meta-rivalry between them.
