You raised a good point in that there is some charm to Scrappy with his affection for Scoob. When they tone him down in this upcoming material he's downright inoffensive. 99 episodes of filler fluff...poor soul. I hope they one day bring him back but do it in a way that brings out Scrappys potential to spice up the dynamic without being a full pest and the show missing the core Scooby elements.

From the sound of things, Scrappy being added to the cast did cause problems upsetting the group dynamic, but more than anything it was the sheer fundamental decline in writing quality from fatigued writers and abandoning of the original premise that only exhausterbated his sudden addition to the show. Kind of makes me wonder what series where he was in but the writers were actually bringing their A-game would have gone.

I think Scrappy-Doo was and is a good concept, I would actually like to see him return and he wasn't terrible in season 1. The issue comes in how he was handled in the later seasons. In the second season, cause of voice actor issues and the popularity of Scrappy-Doo, they decided to just put him as the focal point, give him traits of Fred, Velma and Daphne then throw those three away. Then everything only got worse and worse. The issue isn't Scrappy-Doo, it's how Scrappy-Doo was handled by the creators going onwards that was the issue.

Scrappy Doo, to me, was a case of extreme over-exposure. Like most marketing departments in the 80s, you found your iconic design, and merch the bajeezus out of it. Problem Hannah-Barbera had was protecting the character in the show that pushed the merch. So Scooby Doo remains, to this day, a reliable marketing icon, and Scrappy is now a pejorative for annoying, spotlight stealing new/side character.

Adding to the confusion of The Scooby, Scrappy, Puppy Hour. "The Puppy's New Adventures" started life as a one-off special called "The Puppy Who Wanted A Boy" that was popular enough to spawn three sequels: The Puppy's Great Adventure, The Puppy's Amazing Rescue, and The Puppy Saves the Circus. The series was retooled in the second season as "The Puppy's Further Adventures" then episodes from both seasons shows were rerun together as "The Puppy's Further Adventure" before being paired up with Scooby Doo. The first time I ever saw Scrappy Doo was in Ghoul School, and I didn't like him, but I didn't hate him either. I just felt like he didn't fit. The best way I can describe how I feel about Scrappy Doo is - do you remember when the network was hassling the Pinky and the Brain crew to add a third character to the duo and, to make a point, the crew wrote an episode with Pinky and the Brain and Larry. It was obvious Larry didn't belong and added nothing to the character dynamic - the network got the point (for a while) and shut up (for a while). Well, Scrappy Doo is Scooby's Larry.

I always liked Scrappy. Never understood why people started trashing him. I think it was more about people not actually watching the episodes with Scrappy and just assuming he killed the original magic of the series. I think VH1 did an episode of I Love the 70s or 80s where they basically just rolled their eyes at Scappy and tried to trash him for comedic effect, never really understanding the history of the character or how it caused Scooby-Doo to be renewed for like five more seasons. But ever since this misconception, people disliked him, simply because of what non-fans had said about him. These are the same kind of people who "joked" about Shaggy and Scooby smoking weed, Fred and Daphne splitting up together to go bang, or Velma being a lez. Then WB dumped on him, and each new iteration followed that trend.

If I'm understanding this correctly, what made Season 4 more tolerable was not the quality of the jokes, but rather the presence of a plot. With any sort of coherent framing device for the activities on screen, the humor that was there had context. You could follow the logic better, and even development expectations that could be humorously subverted. It wasn't just a sequence of non-sequiters, a gag reel without rhyme or reason. The jokes themselves did not improve measurably in quality. But watching Season 4 made the jokes feel more grounded, and left the brain less numb in the face of total nonsense.

You cover the most oddly specific memories from my childhood and also have the same takes as Kid Me. I dig it.

Thank you so much! I could've sworn that I really put my time and effort into the full franchise.

Rejoice, for Scrappy is redeemed in the eyes of the public. He’s saved us all from the horrible reign of “Self Inserticus”. Perhaps I judged him too harshly.

Oh, also, evolution happening really quick over the dog generations in that bloodline, perhaps. Scrappy is the next generation down from Scooby and his siblings, and got an extra jump, whereas the Doos themselves are a jump from normal dogs (they can talk, and manipulate things.)

Special shout out to the Scooby and Scrappy Christmas special. (Ghost of Christmas Past.) Its one of the few times were Scrappy was actually funny and it had a good mystery.

Fun fact! Scrappy Doo was featured in the Scooby Doo Apocalypse! He was a HUGE MONSTER DOG THERE!!!
