In this video I repair a LG Flatron 19 inch screen which works for a few seconds and then the backlights switch off (2 sec to black). I go through the disassembly, troubleshooting and repair steps. Note larger capacitors retain a charge even after mains are disconnected.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, it's very easy to break a clip, or even the plastic bezel itself. My confidence comes from over 20 years of taking things apart.

Thanks buddy. Your video helped me in opening and closing my monitor properly. Mine was similar problem. When I on/ off monitor around 15 times it would stay after that . It was tiering. After seeing your video I got courage to open my LG 19" monitor. Model W1942. I though had different finding. My monitor was having very much dust. So I cleaned it, then used my hair dryer to remove any moisture that might have accumulated. Then I reconnected all wires and started the monitor and bingo it showed the screen immediately. I had this problem year back also. But some how I had managed. We have monsoon season in Mumbai India right now and humidity is high. So it can be dust, humidity causing problem. This is my experience. I did it today. Let's see how it starts tomorrow. I'll update it later. Any way thanks for video.

Thanks for another great repair video. You have no fear of the thin plastic! The hard part I have found is knowing where all the clips are hiding in the first place? .

I just fixed one of these monitors. The symptom was that the blue power LED would flash on for a moment, then off for bit, then repeat. Capacitor C812 (Su'scon 1000 uF 10 V 105 deg C) was visibly puffy. I just soldered in a replacement and the monitor works fine. I find that a 2-inch plastic putty knife will help get some leverage without damaging the screen (and saving my fingernails). You can use two or three as shims to keep the case from popping back together. Thanks for the video.

Oh and what's invovled when soldering and insulating the ccfl? Want to add I have a different model lcd monitor which works in the first few seconds after turning it on but then it shuts off and STA"YS off. It doesn't come on repeatedly. I've oiled fans before but I've never replaced capacitors or worked with itnernals parts by soldering something. So this is all a big jump for me if I attempt. It's a huge help to find videos like this online.

I tried the "american components russian components" technique.. It didn't work.. Then I tried your way, it worked. Cost me about $2 and a 6 miles walk to find the parts. I replaced all the capacitors, works like a charm. Hope it will last. Thanks mate, God bless ya.

One good way to discharge a large cap holding under 1kV is to use the diode test mode of the meter. Make sure the mains is off, hold the probes to the cap one way or other until it displays about 0.5V. That way you avoid nasty sparks, shocks etc.

I've never damaged a ccfl lamp by handling it over the years, but you have to be very careful when working with the lcd panel, as that can get damaged very easily.

My Flatron L1717S has a similar problem. The screen blacks out after barely a second, but sometimes (~ 1/100) it stays on. It even stayed on for 3 days in a row without issue, until I turned it off by mistake. I haven't open it yet, but would my problem be on the board instead of the backlights? Or something else entirely? (I'm not equipped to test the backlights.)

Just for testing purposes, if you connect for an example from a 15" laptop I found no problems. Heatshrink tubing, and try not to damage the original silicone rubber housing at the end of the lamp. I push the lamp through the silicone through the hole where the wire attaches to the lamp, and after soldering I put it back.

The boards and shell look almost identical to my "Acer AL2216W bd" monitor. I'm having similar problems, but not exactly the same. The moment I connect my monitor to power, the light goes green as if it's on and flashes the "Acer" logo, then turns off to yellow and I cannot get it back to green again. I noticed two swollen capacitors that I replaced but I'm still having the same problem. Should I just replace all the capacitors even if they look good? Wish you would have shown how to pull those lamps out and how you worked on them! All that info would have been great! But, amazing job so far! Glad I found this video!

If it's switching to yellow it's not the lamp. It's going into stanby mode maybe because it's not receiving a signal. Check for a faulty cable. Good luck!

I have a monitor (Acer V173, six of them actually) I was hoping maybe you could help me figure out. After watching this video I was super stoked and thought I finally knew what the issue was, I tried the method and the 4th lamp connection seemed to be the key, I had a spare laptop bulb that is good and when I connected that instead of the original bulb, it came on and stayed lit. However, when I got at that bulb and checked the solder points on the ends, they look totally fine? Like perfect still. I have six of these monitors that all do the same thing and I'd really like to fix them but I can't figure out how. All the caps are fine on all of them. I haven't taken multiple panels apart to try the laptop bulb on each but I expect they will all do the same thing. Could it be a different part on the power board? An IC or something? I can do caps and I could have soldered the wire on a bulb but beyond that I'm totally lost. Any help would be appreciated.

In the case of my monitor, the backlight turns off after 2 seconds, just the same as on the video. It's a BenQ G2420hd. I tried your approach with the spare lcd screen and it got lit for two seconds on three of the connectors and on the fourth one, the spare lcd didn't light on at all, though the main screen turned on for 2 seconds. I will try to change the caps, although they seem ok, but do you have any other suggestions? Is this behavior consistent with the scenario that some of the caps failed?

Two questions: When testing using ccfls from another screen, do they have to be same size as the bad ones? And what'd you use for insulation after you re-soldered wires on. Thanks

So the bad connections to the CCFL were causing the circuit to break, which caused the screen to shut off? But why does the screen work for a few seconds when it's turned on, before shutting off? And why can't the screen operate on less than 4? Why does it "break"?

*_"everything turned out to be 100%"_* Yeah, right.... Visual inspection is not enough to be 100% sure that a capacitor is fine, you would need an LCR meter or something similar, not every capacitor that fails, bulges or leaks.

+RelentlessBassMedia Your first job is to remove the lamp from the panel, without damaging the panel itself (the bottom one is much easier than the top). Once you have done that its just the case of measuring how long it is and buying the same one on ebay. Make sure to get the lamps with wires already soldered to make the job easier. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

i managed to undo all the fastener around the screen, but for some reason i cant seem to just pull out the insides of the screen away from the back pannel, it seems locked, is there some kind of a fastener there too? i tryed pulling hard, but if i pull any harder i think the plastic will just snap, thx

PsychoBunny85 Remove the stand as sometimes there are screws hidden there. Is your model the exact same model as the one in the video? Good luck!

yea, it was the stand, it is the same model, but i guess the standard of making them for other countries varies, thx!

Update: My monitor is working just fine. But I still have to switch it off and on only ONCE now. In second go out stays. Then there is no problem. Today on Monday morning I switched it on after Sunday break, it has started displaying after 1 on/off cycle. This is update for you just in case you face same problem.

@@helio3630 After some days it worked normally. I have not used my monitor since 21st March till date due to lockdown, but till then there was no problem at all now.

@@helio3630 it has worker very well. Let me see how it works after lockdown is over. I guess till then monsoon will also be there. All dusts will catch moisture. If needed I will have to clean it again. But bottom line is that after certain years you need to service your monitor, cleaning dust and all. Thats what I feel now.

Most suppliers supply the backlight without the wire anyway, so you need to get it resoldered. Good luck!

Replacing capacitors only costs a couple of dollars, and if you are handy with a soldering iron, you can do this with no problem. Make sure the mains are disconnected at all times and make sure you get the polarity of the capacitors correct. If you check through my videos, you will find a screen repair where I replace capacitors with a step by step tutorial. Good luck.
