Lee Chang-Dong and Michael Haneke are similar in many ways, and are two of my favorite living filmmakers. I believe they both started making films in their 40’s also.

Director Lee's Choice to become director from novelist in the forties is incredible present to Korean people. And the English Translator is really awesome. style, precise, dignity, memory etc. unbelievable.

Let’s be honest he’s not the only director to address socio-economic injustices and explore human emotions/interactions, but his sincerity and sensitivity distinguish his movies and make them authentic and unique. He’s not doing this just as a genre or a trend, he genuinely cares and his great sens of art helps him come up with such masterpieces.

Great interpreter, as a native korean speaker i am simply amazed at how articulate and accurate her translation is, and not even missing out a single word Director Lee says. Also her accent is nice, is that a tinge of Northern English/Irish accent i hear? I can't tell, but it's so charming either way

just watched Peppermint Candy last week. it was amazing. felt like it was like the mirror of Burning. (slight spoiler alert!) Burning was moving forwards, asking question and eventually led to a cathartic destructive ending. Peppermint Candy was moving backwards, giving answers and led to a painfully beautiful beginning. Just absolute masterpieces. Even the train montages, it was amazing cuz the train in reverse literally looks like it's moving forward. it was like the predecesor to TENET. I cant wait to experience the other 4 films he directed.

I enjoy watching him. He's a movie himself. His facial texture is the result of applying excessive skincare products. Could it be that...I just get the vibes oozing from him. Well, it won't be a bad thing if someone comes along to care for and pamper him. 😌😌

Thank you BFI for this wonderful resource. I recently went to see Carl Theo. Dreyer's "Ordet" at a public cinematic in Seoul, and Lee Chang-dong (스승님) happened to be there - mildly hidden under a baseball cap. "Ordet" totally affected me and had the power to draw such a master director to a public screening. Any of you all who like Lee Chang-dong's films will most likely be moved by "Ordet."

I am Korean, and Lee Chang Dong is my favourite Korean film director and Kim Ki Duk. Their film’s atmosphere is totally different and I feel both very deep inside in a different way. Through this interview I found the reason why I was crazy about films and art from kid and also the reason why I like Kim Ki Duk’s film thorough Lee Chang Dong’s words. It’s the part where he says about the film “Poetry” 38:00 in Korean 42:00 in English. Thanks to BFI also, this is the best interview for me.

Glad I stumbled on this interview. 'The driving force of capitalist society is to accumulate money, hence I see a parallel with the gangster genre' (words to that effect) cf. Brecht's play 'The Resistible rise of Arturo Ui', wherein he uses the gangster genre to talk about the rise of fascism (which could - and should have been - stopped...) In other words, given his literary background, Lee Chang-dong uses metaphor as a basis for his film making, in which he questions existing society; he wants to make us think that something is wrong, which needs to be changed - fundamentally - I have yet to see any of his movies, but will watch 'Burning' asap. Based on this interview (and watching reviews of 'Burning'), I think that my ideas will be confirmed! We need more film makers like LCD

@@imoutsideoutintheforest8337 I apologise, i shouldn't have written under the first impression. The director's talk seemed just so much longer, but probably because it was slower, as he was looking for words. Also, something in me was (unconsciously) expecting something extraordinary from this extraordinary man; certainly ungrounded expectation for a regular interview.

I live in Korea, speak the language, work in film, and do a good amount of translation/spontaneous interpretation work. I can honestly say that this translator is doing a fine job. Lee Chang-dong's responses are very succinct and in accordance with the questions. Often, in this interview, he is adding his own free-associations to questions posed by the moderator, which cause the translator greater translation. Regardless, in my own humble opinion, I've found that all three panelists - interviewee, interviewer, and translator - have been of the same mind. They've seemed to have shared the common, terrific goal of properly expressing the ineffable.
@akayrk

that’s because he is speaking fairly slowly, carefully choosing his words, whereas the translator speaks faster as she knows what to say once he is done talking. I speak Korean btw.
