The Flash empIoys several different kinds of time travel in its story, drawing from movies like back to the Future, X-Men: days of the Future Past, Groundhog Day, Interstellar, and Avengers: Endgame. IN this video we break down exactly how it works, and what this means for the new DCU.

#Flash #TimeTravelExplained
We have been getting a lot of questions about time travel in the flash movie, because-well-it’s really confusing. The movie employs several different kinds of time travel to tell its story, and I’m here to explain all of them to you. [what the hell is going on?]
And don;t forget to visit our merch store where we’ve got fun flash-sh merch like this fetch shirt, be kind don;t rewind, and “you wanna play fect? Let’s play fetch” shirts-link in the description.
So, let’s talk about time travel. We fielded a lot of questions about time travel after avengers endgame, explaining branching timelines. And now this movie completely upends all of tht, with a scene where Michael keaton actually says, “you probably saw a movie that explained time travel as branching timeline., but that’s not right.”
So the Flash actually does emply this kind of time travel-but it also combines different types of time travel from other movies. So we are going to explain each type of time travel that is sue din the movie, until it all makes sense.
I want to quickly shout out the channel Minute Physics for their grat breakdown of different kinds of time travel, and new rockstars also has a gerat video breaking down different types of time travel in movies.
Let’s start with the one we’re all most familiar with-causality theory. This is like in Back to the Fuure. If you travel back in time to your past, then you can actually change your past. and -like Marty mcFlay-erase yourself from existence. This kind of time travel is the easiest for most people to understand, because we are linear beings who perceive time as a fixed, one way motion. So if this thread represents my timeline, and someone goes back in time to kill me, then that thread is severed and I cease ot exist.
In the Flash, we see this casualty with Other Barry. He gets a scar in the past, so a scar appears on his future self.
Doug: Yeah, why did that happen to him, but not to the rest of the universe.
Because-like Marty McFly-both Barrys are fulcrums in time-which I will explain in a bit.
The next type of time travel is the branching reality, and this ois what we saw in endgame. Bruce explained it like this [changing past doens;t change your future, doens;t become new past].
So this one still confuses people. Basically, Bruce iis saying that it is impossible for you to ever change your own timeline, because this creates a paradox. Liek, if you were to invent a time machine, and then you traveled bak in time to prevent yourself from building a time machine-you’re not actually undoing your past. You’re creating an alternate timeline where you don;t ever get to time travel.
In the MCU, each of these branching timelines is a new universe. That also happens in the flash, but more on that in a bit.
Doug: I still don;t get it.
Okay, let’s say that this paper towel roll represents the flow of time. Your broth, your death, Julius caesar, megan thee stallion, all in here. And this thread represents your life. So when you travel back in time, it’s like puncuring a hole in the tube, and you’re running through that hole. You’re always still going to be you, but now that hole i time is going to branch out.
Doug: Oh I get it. Cardboard is a very helpful tool.
Thank you. So the next tye of time travel is when something had always happened. This is like in Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban, when Harry, hermione and ron travel back in time to save their past selves lives-wich allows them to later go back in time and save their own lives. IN a way, this is like in Bill and ted’s excellent adventure, when they remind themselves to go back later and after the win, to plant the keys [clip]. Or, like how Rufus never intridcused himself-but bill and ted tell their past selves rufus’s name [clip].
