@@196cupcake”waste of premise” is a good way to put it. It 100% is. This is a movie about war correspondents, with an emphasis on the photogs. It could have taken place in South America, or Sub-Saharan Africa, or the Middle East, or Southeast Asia, in a real or imagined country, in a real or fictionalized war. That part is pretty irrelevant. Instead, it took place in a fictionalized US, which was probably a good decision because it gave it a lot more buzz than it would have otherwise gotten.

once enough people flee California by voting for higher taxes, they would move to Texas and do the same, thereby putting them in the same boat. This is actually happening but very slowly. In recent years, people are moving to Florida over Texas through.

I feel like doing so neutered the whole concept they were going with. We have this big striking imagery in all the advertisements, and the name CIVIL WAR implying it's a film that won't shy away from portraying the just how divided this country is. (A highly militaristic country, and one that still has a good portion of the nation waving the battle flags of the secessionists from the last civil war). And yet rather than an interesting story about the collapse of safety, or showing how a ramping up in polarization lead to this, the actual Civil War aspect of the story feels more like a backdrop to a war road trip movie. (Also I feel whenever someone says "didn't take any explicit sides", I feel like they're afraid of whatever take showing some uncomfortable truths. Maybe humanizing a type of people that one aggressive side feels is automatically the enemy.)
