Step inside the pitch meeting that led to CATS!
The internet had a ton of fun when the first trailer for CATS was released, revealing the true fear that is digital fur technology. With an all-star cast featuring the likes of Judi Dench, Ian McKellan, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, James Corden, Rebel Wilson and more- CATS is the big screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Now that the movie is out, the few people that paid money to see it probably have a few questions. Like what is “Jellicle” and why do they keep saying it?! What’s up with all these cats introducing themselves and then leaving. Why are some cats magic and others not? Why are all these cats competing in a singing competition where the prize is dying?

My head canon for Cats (the original, I've never seen the movie) is that since they're cats who are reborn this must be the nine lives thing. So they need to be reborn 9 times before they can move on to the after life, but if you die before being chosen than you won't be reborn. This is why it's so important for them, even magic ones who you would think would be happy with their current lives, to want to be chosen. If they aren't, they will die forever.

He’s right. Unfortunately, the musical isn’t much different from the film. All it is just singing and sensually dancing furries introducing themselves, and that’s it. I went to go see it at the Kennedy Center, and as a theatre nerd I really hoped it would be another great show to add on my list of favorites……..boy was I wrong ☹️ We left not even halfway through the show because we were so confused, bored, and disappointed on the lack of plot or sense lol. Imagine tripping acid to this dear god. Edit: Also I sat there in the theater the whole time getting more frustrated about the constant “Jellicle” repetition. Does being a Jellicle cat mean that they are apart of a cult of the same name? 😮is that what it’s about? A cult that sacrifices one of their members every now and then?

The musical is not so bad because there is a certain sort of surrealness that you kind of forgive on stage but that doesn't work the same way in a movie, and also because you don't watch it for the story, you watch it for catchy music and great dancing. But yeah, it's a weird musical, and by all accounts, the movie is significantly worse.
