We aren't out of this. Saw second Dune. They turned Chani into, quite nearly, the lead. She is literally leading in front of the main character (Paul) on the poster. She spends the entire movie showing how much smarter and more capable she is than any other character, how she sees through the work of the Bene Gesserit, and how she can perceive things way beyond her culture and time, etc. She is OP as hell, going from barely a mention to being the main supporting actor. In the book, her main role was one of lover and bearer of child. Now, she is a whiny, super-fighting, transcendent, and manish leader of the main character. The movie was, beyond being a fantastic film at a technical level, an anti-colonial and gynocentric film.

To give credit to the movie, it has a LOT else going for it, including the worms. Again, the technical filming was great. I don't meant to ruin it for you. There is so much they did well for a book that was not well suited for film. Frankly, so much of the book is descriptions of thoughts and strategies and histories, there is really not a lot of action and dialogue for its length. It is descriptions of thoughts of visions of perceptions on centuries of strategy, you know. You can't easily convey that with a movie. They just did to Chani what they did to so many other female characters - made them greater at the expense of other characters by having her show them how to do things they would already know or having her realize things she could not possibly realize (like the entire culture of her planet was planned and the prophecies of her faith were a setup). There are several scenes where she and her other young female friends outwardly mock the religion upon which the entire society of the Freman is based - which is both ridiculous (how would she think to do this?) and deadly (the other Freman would kill her for blasphemy). It is continuous throughout the film. It was enough to make my eyes twitch during so many scenes of an otherwise decent adaptation. @@HenryLeslieGraham

And while theaters are empty, the accolades from the bubble of legacy media and social media still exist. No, it's not over. Diversity inflation is something that really throws me, especially in fantasy. Case in point: The Dragon Prince, which I generally liked for the first few seasons, but I started noticing it as things when on. For example, you had the Commander who was 1. Deaf, 2. Commander of the Army despite being a woman and deaf, and 3. later you find out she is a lesbian, because she gets engaged to her elf rival. You then find 2 other gay couples throughout the story, 1. The lesbian Queens of one of the other countries (which doesn't work in the slightest given how royal succession and bloodlines work), and 2. Rayla's commander is gay as well. At this point I was looking at this and thinking, "The odds that we would have 3 gay couples that are all important to the plot in a fantasy setting is so outside the realm of possibility that this just takes me out of the experience". It really just feels like they were just trying to cram in as much representation as possible (but making sure to do it with side characters to get normal people to follow the story). They are trying just a little too hard.

They are just realizing that their approach was commercially inept. They will reassess, recalibrate, and reevaluate. They will never change their ideology, but hopefully adjust their heavy-handed approach so that their product at least is entertaining to a mass audience instead of being either offensive or just boring.

From the bra-burning feminists of the 1960s(even Gloria Steinem ended up getting married), the free-love hippies(an excuse to hook up), disco (another excuse to hook up) The conspicuous consumption of the 80s, all of these are just fads that have all faded away in time. They say this, too, shall pass. But what they don’t tell you is that sometimes it passes like a kidney stone, painfully with screaming and meds.

This video by "a random KZbinr" had better writing than all of Hollyweird's movies over the past 15 years combined .

They did their job perfectly. It was all intentional. Of course they knew no one would want it. They can't keep it going forever, so they are now back-tracking, but the damage is done and they were successful in what they endeavored to do. Please try to understand how the world really works....

Well said Sir. Money made Hollywood what it is today. Wealth in such quantity made them so guilty, that they needed a way to purge the sins from all those cars, airplanes, boats and houses. And through such acts, thought themselves above the rest of us. One is reminded of the "smug cloud" in Southpark. In reality, they were far below the average American- but no one will tell you that when you have money. Now all that money is flying away. Here's a stat for you. In 1998, video game sales surpassed ticket sales- and no one in Hollywood even noticed. The need for profit is suddenly becoming clear in Hollywood- and many a mea culpa is being performed... Personally, I think it too late for Hollywood. I think independent creators will slowly surpass them via the web. There will be the occasionally pony found in a mountain of horse excrement- but that will be most rare. "Put a chick in it! Make her gay! Make it lame!" still has quite the hold. I think it a stranglehold.

Wow, great take. Enjoyed that one. Reason - with a capital R - really is like fresh air when you encounter it. Fortunately, we seem to be finding more green shoots of the stuff, even with films like Damsel and Madam Web still polluting the air like a fart in an elevator. It'll still take time for the air to truly clear, as you rightly observed.

It's just so refreshing to see someone still remembers that the origin of it wall was the structuralist methodology hammered down into every humanity's student brain during the last several decades. Liked and subscribe just for that. [Oh, the "two cups" reference was not bad neither...]

Jesus Christ Almighty! Sometimes yt's algo gives a real treasure in form of this channel. After an enormous amount of laughter in only first 30 seconds of the video, I barely scraped myself from the floor to continue watching this masterpiece of an exercise in sarcastic cynicism.

Pussification is a noun. Pussify is the verb. I will also accept "pussificated", if applied to the PNW as the perfect tense. Yr welcome.
