In today’s Scripted we revisit a powerful moment from Swades.
On his way back from meeting Haridas, a poor farmer who is unable to feed his children, Mohan is disturbed by the problems that plague India.
He is finally overcome with frustration, sorrow and helplessness when he comes across a boy who instead of school, sells water at a train station to survive.

I was also thinking about the same, how much depth this child was having about his role, or how much he moulded to act so raw to showcase his talent as nearer to the reality...hats of this child artist..how he was running side by side of the trains, stopped and took a pause from his words and gracefully ask "sahab paani lo na"..it has made into tears, and about the SRK he is the master, no comparison at all. That's how he has ruled Bollywood over the years with his flawless acting..

This scene is no doubt a testament to Shahrukh's true talent which is today lost in mainstream films. He didn't utter a word, but conveyed his thoughts and feelings better than any spoken language could. Hats off This film was way ahead of it's time. A gem of Indian cinema

This shows the power of a strong director, actor and the music composer. On paper it's not such a strong scene, simple scene. But the way it is executed is perfect and elevates it to a strong, moving scene. The director kept it very real and a very good shot initially with the boy running and giving us an aerial view. Shahrukh was spot on with his emotions just perfect amount. And AR Rahman background score just elevated the scene :)

If actor is the heart and soul, director the brain, then writers are the entire skeletal framework of the body! This scene is written very well and both the water boy and SRK emote it equally good, doing full justice to the writing.

What a masterpiece this film is. It's a shame that the Indian cinema-going public wasn't, isn't and never will be ready to accept such brilliant films. This is one of the very few Indian films that demonstrated patriotism and love for ones country without having to resort to any kind of jingoism. Fantastic.

What's happening here? 1. The obvious. Mohan is coming back from meeting the poor farmer Haridas and has witnessed first hand the cruelty and unfairness that was doled out to him. A julaha (weaver) who was ostracized and left to starve only because he dared to switch professions to become a farmer. Mohan is deeply disturbed by this. And when he sees another poor child selling water he tries to do his part, buy a cup of water from him. 2. The theme. Mohan was born in India but he has not been an Indian for a long, long time. He sleeps in a RV, drinks packaged water, dabbles in superficial arguments about India's problems with Gita. This is the moment he decides to reforge his bond with his motherland. He's just not drinking normal tap water, he's drinking India in, again. With all her problems and injustices and imperfections. Just like this cup of "impure" water. It is truly in this moment that Mohan starts becoming an Indian again. PS: a lot of people are saying the writing is mediocre, its only the performance that elevates this scene. No, the writing is beautiful. Its very layered and nuanced.

I have lived/travelled in India during that time and 25 paisa had long gone by that time (years 2003-2004). In those days, Smallest transactions in India with a coin were conducted with a 1 rupee coin. and, I can recognize the coin that it is indeed a 1 rupee coin. The water-boy should have been saying "1 cup of water for 1 rupee". and, if he was indeed selling for 25 paisa, he would be trying to return 75 paisa to SRK. But, he didn't.

0:47 ARR shows us the beginnings of a massive swell of emotions, slowly building up increasingly intense attention 1:19 the dissonant whistle of the train really brings the tension of the scene to a breaking point, the hair on your body stands 1:28 the score explodes in that high violin part and wrenches our guts as the swades theme plays Rahman sir just really hit this one out of the park. He's known for so many great BGMs but this is better than most. Better than those Roja, Bombay, Dil Se scenes. This one is so subtle and achieves an astounding effect with no extraneous or overwrought melodrama.

We all have felt this helplessness , anger , sorrow and again helplessness when we witnessed such poverty stricken people who we know are being denied equal opportunities and do not have ample resources to live a dignified life . The way this scene was set up was wonderful. Everything before that scene culminated to changing Mohan and he for the first time didn't drink the packaged water. It was the first time I actually choked seeing a movie. It might be the first great movie I ever watched and after that I have watched it numerous times and every time I feel the same. I still remember watching the movie in one of those single theaters in Pune. Pin drop silence during this scene.. I could feel the entire theater shocked in pain.. i was speechless for 5 minutes n then turned to my friend to ask "just how did he pull off this scene"?

This scene needs no acting to shed tears. Absolute masterpiece. Numb... the helplessness of SRK and the hope in the boy's voice to sell a glass of water for 25 paise...still counting balance change of 75 paise to return back after getting 1 rupee......no words. By far the best scene of the movie and awesome direction. Superb acting (read as raw emotion), and just plain simple dialogue "25 p ka 1 glass..." its all that takes to deliver a beautiful scene.

What an excellent movie Swades was in 2004 . Just cant believe, the movie did not do well that year. If it had released in 2023, It would have changed the way people look at India. It would have been a smash hit. Ashutosh is very unlucky to release it in 2004, because it was way ahead of the thinking people had 20 years back
