I'm late to the party, but I still thought I'd share an alternative to the process at 19:50 that I stumbled upon. Instead of turning on Backtrack and Snap to Track, try this: - Click and hold on the mesh to start a brush stroke - Hold Shift and then drag out a line (it will tell you what angle that line is and snap to certain intervals) - Keep your pen down and release Shift Thank you for all the tutorials Tim, they're very helpful!

the best way i have found to deal with tiling something like those ornaments in your case is to go under deformation and smart resym (by default it does it from right to left). You start doing your patter from left to right but don't go all the way to the end on the right. you stop just before it. You mask out a decent bit of your geometry on the left side (where you started your pattern) and click smart resym. it will basically take the masked section from the left and mirror it over to the right.

You should extend your target area. Let's say you want to capture 2mx 2m surface area as tillable. In order to don't have that border problem, first add a plane and make sure your trim sheet border is slightly larger, so you won't have that problem about tiling.

There's one option that could work for tiling.. Have a straight uv for the low poly ready in Max. Make sure that there are a lot of loops on the low poly, otherwise it'll distort the alpha badly. Export the image snapshot to photoshop. Tile the black and white/greyscale ornamental part in Photoshop. Invert the new image(turn off the snapshot png or grid) and save as a tiff, etc. Bring it into zbrush as an alpha. Under masking, use mask by alpha.. It should result in a seamless relief sculpt once you use deformations to inflate.. That's one way. It's kinda similar, but you need to have a high enough resolution on your B&W alpha.. Assuming you have a B&W alpha ready. Doesn't work for everything

For the tiling issue, it looks like you're starting the tile too close to the edge, if you look at 21:19 you can see that the texture is tiling from green line to green line, if you start by doing your first click a little further in than directly on the edge, it should tile fine from then on. This is just a guess, but it jumped out at me while I was watching.

For tiling, make a duplicate of the strip and paint on the details. Then duplicate the detailed on and move it side to side with the first copy to find where it tiles. Move these so their joint is somewhere inside the original strip and hide everything but these three. Hit reproject to transfer the two strips to your first strip. Delete the two copies. Now you can fix the sculpting of the seam in zbrush using blur etc.

Awesome vids as always! I'm still learning ZBrush, so I'm still slowly getting used to the user interface. I feel a lot more comfortable with Mudbox at the moment. Could one get away with sculpting extensively with other sculpting software other than ZBrush? I know that a majority of artists use ZBrush, and it's usually recommended almost all the time. That's not to say I won't use it, but I'd just like to master sculpting in a more user-friendly tool before I dive full-on into ZBrush.

Maybe to make seamless pattern on mesh, unwrap mesh in 3ds max, place tiled alpha inside 3ds max to check that all tileable in UV-ed space, after that load in zbrush mesh, add texture, and make mask by texture and extrude. It will work i think? :D

Hey Tim, Thanks for the trim sheet tutorials. I've got the gumroad files as a contribution to Polygon Academy to keep on cracking this in-depth content. I am by all means on the lower end of being an amateur when it comes to content creation, mainly due to the fact I am coming from a programming perspective, so sometimes I find it hard to keep expressing creativity with the foreshadow of being pragmatic. To my question, and I wanted to ask you before going to a forum for help. After sculpting in ZBrush and Import to 3DS Max, I duplicate my high poly meshes for the AO*(Not sure if this is the correct tum/reason). Now in your videos of sculpting in ZBrush, you say set brush wrap mode to 1 to enable wrapping for tiling. I have done that, but when I have the objects side by side, my cracks don't line up and the open edges are not straight when I've used wrap mode near the edges. I am wondering if there is another setting possibly ?
@PolygonAcademy
@PolygonAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support! I really appreciate it :) you have to turn on wrap mode for each brush individually, that might be it? Only other thing incould think of is your basemesh wasnt set to a power of 2 like 4m wide?
@aaron30052
@aaron30052 4 жыл бұрын
EDIT: So I found my solution. The problem must have stemmed from creasing my edges. My solution: In ZBrush, before subdividing, I crease via Geometry -> Crease -> Crease Button, then I Subdivide and for my final 2 subdivisions, I use the smoothing option. I noticed with this method, 1, my trim sheet is tileable, and second, when I am in 3DS Max setting up for Substance Painter, if I clone a trim piece and when I move it 4m left or right, both pieces of geometry match 100% so this method alleviates geometry shrinkage. @@PolygonAcademy I have narrowed it down to this; if I subdivide in zbrush without smoothing no problem, even in 3DS Max, I duplicate 4m left or right and the meshes align perfectly. So when I subdivide 3-4 times then 2ish time with smoothing turned on, then this problem occurs. I made sure I creased my edges and still happens. A penny for your thoughts? I've tried numerous ways with Live Boolean turned on and off. Thanks for your advice :)

I am wondering though at the end of this video you use subtool master to export all tools, how long does this process take to complete? I am trying to create a trim sheet and when I import the meshes to Zbrush and divide them (after a couple of subdivisions with no smooth switched on) it still shrinks the edges a bit and ruins the tiling of the sheet. Hi Tim, any idea why my wrap mode is acting up? Whenever I try to sculpt on the corners of my rectangular mesh, with mode 1 it not only sculpts in the corners but also on two other places on the X axis. No matter how much I google, I cannot find an answer. Help lol. EDIT: Found a workaround which might be useful to someone. You can store a "morph target" (Tool-Morph Target) and then paint over the spots with unwanted brush strokes with a "morph brush". That way you can have a tiling brush strokes over a non-uniform (rectangular) mesh. Tim, how did you get your wrap mode working?

Hi, can I ask you a question? I prepared my mesh in 3ds max just like you showed, with the 3 big tiles in the lower part and all, but when I import it in Zbrush it just doesnt subdivide like yours does. I dont get any of the previously made detail and I don't know what I am doing wrong.

When you subdivide in zb, are you turning off the smth button for the first few subdivision? That keeps the edges crisp and then turning smth on for the last one adds a bit of edge bevel.

Hi Tim! thanks again for your tutorial, I have some problems here in zbrush, dividing less times than you do the polycount grows so absurd, at the end of the various divisions I have a total of more than 30 million in total point, when you stay sleep to 10 million, before exporting from blender the mesh seems similar to yours in terms of density, what can make it happen? the starting parts have this number of tris: A: 5500; B2800; C4800; D178k; E6k; F16k; G1500. am I probably exaggerating with density before importing into zbrush? sorry for the thousand questions :) have a nice day
@PolygonAcademy
@PolygonAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
yea subdividing your mesh always multiplies the polygon count by 4, so I think your starting basemeshes have a higher polygon count than mine, so don't worry if you only have to subdivide it a few times and it doesnt match the amount of times I did it, just aim for 1-4mill for each piece!

@@PolygonAcademy thanks for the quick answer, I'll come back in blender trying to fix it, I noticed that even if part E is very dense (starting 6k, the one above the curved part),if I don't divide it more times in zbrush (4 or 5 times), when I add the smooth option retracts from the corners, but I can easily have mistaken something in blender. I immediately try to improve. thanks again Tim :)

I'm gonna ask this question because I've been researching and can't find a solid solution that works for me. Is there any way to "lock" the borders of the mesh? If I want to pinch some strokes near to the edge of the mesh, the mesh warps and messes up my X/Y Axis and doesn't tile correctly when I'm trying to bake the highpoly into a lowpoly plane. I've tried to lock the sculpt axis in Transform > Modifiers and only select the Z axis, but some brushes with alpha's don't work properly (Orb Cracks in my case). I've also tried doing a morph target and only morph the X and Y axis to preserve the sculpted data from the Z axis, but it messes up some detail... Is there any solution for that? I had thought of adding in my 3D software, a copy of the mesh, left and right, and modify the WrapMode to be able to sculpt without fear of losing the edges. Thanks in advance!

I'm having an issue with the bottom row of bricks and poly groups. When I auto poly group the bottom row of bricks they don't separate in to different poly groups, it's just the one group. I have a row of smaller bricks further up and that one has worked fine, I used the exact same process to create the two rows of bricks. Anyone know why this is happening?

I figured it out, when your importing it the dimensions are off, you're model could be way too big.

Question; that crack brush you are using at 15:35, what is it called? Where you can click and drag an image that forms the shape on the model, instead of working like a brush? Am more used to Mudbox but I want to get into Zbrush. But I got no idea what that crack image is called in Zbrush, so its making difficult for me to look for HOW to put something like that in my Zbrush XD
@PolygonAcademy

i think its called draw? if you see the squiggle line icon in your brush that is called stroke, click that, and then look for the one that is like a square with an arrow, either called drag or draw or something like that. its the other option for your brush panel that isn't the alpha slot. let me know if that helps! haha sorry for the non exact/technical answer, im on my phone at the moment :)

@@PolygonAcademy Thanks! I managed to figure it out. Another question that popped up as I was watching this video. Say I want to import my own decoration instead of that flower thingie you used. How do I do it? Ive tried to google it but I keep getting "how to import brushes".
@PolygonAcademy
@PolygonAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheIcelandicBoy you would import your own alpha and then create your own brush preset, but i was just using one of jonas ronnegards 100's of pre-made brushes in this case, so you just load a brush. but to change the design, load a new alpha and you will need to change the stroke spacing etc. to get the pattern to properly repeat.

There is an option in the Symmetry section of sculpt brushes (The right side panel) called tiling. You can choose each axis you ant tiling on. Just change the Tiling offset value to the distance you need in meters/blender units. In the case of this tutorial you would want X-Tiling with an offset of 4 in the X.

Does anyone have the issue where you import your .obj and the normals are flipped in ZBrush? I am using Blender for the modeling. The normals looks perfect in Blender but once imported into ZBrush, they are flipped.

check your normal direction in blender with the overlay mode that does face sides. often its hard to tell what direction faces are going in blender unless you check or turn off double sided drawing
