Very informative video. I've had my RSP1 in operation for a couple months now, still learning what all the buttons and functions do since the rather complicated user manual is rather, complicated. The difference between the RTL dongle and the RSP1 is quite striking, hence there's more options available but a higher learning curve with RSP1, having stopped using the RTL it was a good place to begin learning SDR applications and operation. I use a MLA30 loop antenna with the RSP1 and I'm completely happy with the set up. Keep posting more videos of the RSP1.

This video just may be the very best demonstration/tutorial I have ever watched. You must be an instructor of some sort? Anyway, I’m sold and will be tapping my signal out of my TS-480HX. It used to be my mobile radio but Kenwood kindly provided a couple pins in the radio to use. My FT-1000MP looks too difficult to accomplish this. I assume I can tie in Kenwood’s rig control with SDRuno. I’ll use the TS-480 for a while, plus it has twice the power of the old FT-1000. The TS-480 will return to mobile service when I pick up my new FTdX-101D! Yeah, someday maybe! Thanks for the excellent, excellent review. 73! Howard, W1HBO

Thanks for a very interesting and informative video. I have just ordered an RSP1A here in UK. I live in a bungalow in south east Kent with a small garden which is awkward for a long wire. I listen to local coast guard and also to the airband and shortwave and various other broadcasts including 2m repeaters on my 1300 discone which gives good results. I am hoping that the discone will be as good on SDR, is there any reason that the discone would not be a good antenna.
@SevenFortyOne4 жыл бұрын
I believe the discone will work well for what you are trying to listen to. It may not perform well at lower frequencies but if you are mainly interested in vhf and above then it should be fine.

I have been off the air for years and this looks like a fun way to get back in touch w hamming...can you tell me how the sensitivity of the RSP1A is compared to a nice receiver/transceiver like the ICOM 756 PRO III (my last radio)? Can you hear the same signals? I Would think the 756 would be considerably better, BUT I saw a video comparing the sensitivity of the old RSP1 and the 1A and the sensitivity was markedly improved in the 1A so maybe it is not far from a nice receiver? Thanks, Scott W5RC
@SevenFortyOne6 жыл бұрын
I haven't done any head to head tests, but through casual observation I'd have to say that sensitivity of the rsp1a is pretty close to my ic746pro. The only real difference I see between the two is the rsp1a is more likely to overload from strong signals on bands outside of the one you are listening to. The rsp1a is a great value and I think you will be pleasantly surprised by it's performance for the price. I agree that this would be a great way for you to get back into the hobby without breaking the bank.

You are amazing, we are communicating almost in real time today! I'm concerned about RF from my Kenwood TS-440SAT getting into the RSP1A or RSP2 (not sure which I'm buying yet) as they will share the same antenna. Do I need something like the MFJ-1708SDR to switch the antenna between the TS-440SAT and the RSP1A? It has an antenna switch and also can sense RF and will switch automatically if it detects RF going into the input port of the SDR. I haven't seen a discussion on this here or on the SDRplay.com website. Guess at minimum I'd need a manual antenna switch to switch between the two devices and the antenna. Or, is it best to have a separate antenna? I'd still be concerned about high RF getting into the SDR. I believe you are using your 40 and 80 meter antennas for both transmitting and receiving. I'd probably need an antenna switch with multiple inputs and multiple outputs. I will eventually have better antennas. Just got back on the air after being gone for about 15 years. Thanks again!
@SevenFortyOne5 жыл бұрын
In my case, I just disconnect the SDRplay when I'm not using it and never use it at the same time I use my ham transceivers. I've heard good things about the MFJ-1708SDR and have thought about getting one. But I'm kind of a cheap-skate and just haven't been compelled enough to buy one yet. But either the manual switch or the MFJ box should provide the protection you need. There are some videos on the SDRplay website that demonstrate the MFJ box and probably other that show other alternatives.

It really depends on what you think you want to do. If you are using the sdr in conjunction with another radio, the rsp1a is fine. If you want ultimate receiver performance, especially below 2mhz, then the rspdx might be a better choice.

Recently got a RSPdx from SDRPlay. I downloaded the SDRuno software and documentation. Tried to read the manual but did not get much benefit from it. Just like reading an encyclopedia, too much detail, no overview for beginners. I liked your video very much. You did an overview of each major window and described most of the controls. Also like the crib sheet with descriptions and time tags - makes it easy to jump around and repeat sections. The videos by SDRPlay were either too cursory, or way too specific. I would interested in a video on the RSPdx.

Wow, thanks for your quick reply! Really like your videos. I have subscribed. On the RSP2, what is the impedance of the high impredance single line input? Is it 400 ohms or around 2500 ohms? Thinking of using an end fed half wave antenna. Do I need the 49:1 auto transformer? (Takes it close to 50 ohms). Or can I take the single wire and ground into the RSP2 without a UnUn or autotransformer?
@SevenFortyOne5 жыл бұрын
Personally, I don't worry about baluns or matching impedances unless I'm transmitting. I've run wire antennas stuck into the center pin of the 50 ohm jack with success. If you want every last ounce of performance then you can use a matching device....but keep in mind there are insertion losses that may reduce any benefit you get from having a matched impedance. This is just my opinion, others may have advice. Thanks for supporting my channel, I'm glad you enjoy my content.

Good video. Learned some useful information. Thank you. By the way, can you tell me what the "LO" followed by a frequency in the spectrum display means? And can it be removed from the display? Also, do you know if there is a list explaining what the many acronyms associated with the RSP1A mean? I found a list in the operators manual, but it was only a glossary of terms we are all familiar with such as "FM" is Frequency Modulation, not the specific acronyms associated with the RSP1A. I don't know what all these terms like "VRX" and such mean. I was going to print out the manual so I can read it thoroughly, but my printer is messed up at the present time.
@SevenFortyOne4 жыл бұрын
Lo is the local oscillator. I don't think you can hide it's display. Basically the lo is the center frequency of the current bandwidth being tuned. When the lo is locked that frequency doesn't change and you can tune above and below the lo until the edge of the pass band is reached. When unlocked, the lo changes and the pass band moves with it. I think I saw a more detailed glossary or cookbook for sdrplay someplace but can't recall the site now.

Having been in the hobby so long I just sort of have the jargon memorized. But there is a matrix of buttons on the main RX control in SDRuno that when clicked will take you to the corresponding band. They are the button labeled 169,80,40,etc...
@skidmoremusictech5286 жыл бұрын

You can hunt any frequency. When you click the band buttons the Local Oscillator (LO) gets locked and you can only tune within whatever pass-band you have set through the MHZ and DEC buttons. To unlock the LO, just click the LO Lock button right above the Play! button and you'll be able to scroll to whatever frequency you want.

I think it is WINS 1010, Do you think living on long island..I would enjoy this receiver...Im looking at this one or the RSP2 or the Airspy HF+..dont know which one to get...What did they change in the RSP1A to RSP2????
@SevenFortyOne6 жыл бұрын
I like the rsp1a...it's the best value out there right now. The rsp2 has a few extra features but the 1a is fine if you are just starting out. I'm not familiar with the airspy but I've heard good things about it.
@SevenFortyOne6 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't matter where you live to enjoy these radios, however you may struggle with overload if you live close to strong broadcast stations. The built in filters in the 1a will help some but you may need an external filter to really filter them out.

New sub here. Thanks for the review of the SDR radio. I noticed you were using Windows. Does windows perform better than Linux or Macintosh?
@SevenFortyOne5 жыл бұрын
I'm not a mac user and I haven't played much with SDR on Linux. I'm guessing for a casual user the performance would be about the same. There are more software options for Windows to chose from though.

Around min. 18.00, the explanation of rf-gain REDUCTION, it must be the opposit. The more gain-reduction, the lower the signal-level... very good review, by the way ... (I have RSP2Pro, 73's de PD0IFI)
@SevenFortyOne7 жыл бұрын
Sliding the control up increases the RF gain and sliding it down reduces the gain. In my situation I've found increasing the RF gain increases the background noise as well as the target signal so for most listening I leave the RF gain at the minimum setting. Thanks for watching! 73!

SDR is new to me...this is receive only....how do you add a transmitter?
@SevenFortyOne6 жыл бұрын
Broadly speaking you have to either buy one with transmit capability or use one like this ad a panadapter.

@@SevenFortyOne thanks for doing the review btw....Is the Icom 7300 a SDR transceiver in effect... where there is a computer in the box doing all the software processing?

I haven't used one myself but I believe you are correct...the 7300 receiver is a sdr design

Have you tried CubicSDR a linux program with your SDRplay???nice video..

That was my plan but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Hopefully soon...

It was not easy to load on my Linux mint 17.2, You have to load 1 scrip file...then load the SDRplay file, for Linux, then load the second script file, then it will work..took me 3 hours to do it...but I am not that good with typing commands in Linux..

I don't have the room on my lot for an antenna setup like yours. Any alternatives I could try with this unit? I really like the video and I am thinking of getting this unit as a low cost/space saving choice to get into a better radio set up. Currently I have just a little cheap portable with shortwave and weather bands.
@SevenFortyOne7 жыл бұрын
Almost any antenna will work to some degree with this radio. A good antenna for HF bands on a compact lot might be something like a mag loop. Or even a wire strung in the trees or something along those lines would probably work fine. If you are interested in VHF/UHF and above then you may want to look at a wide-band Discone. These RSP units offer alot of value for the money. If you are interested in the versatility of an SDR then I'd recommend getting this over a traditional portable or tabletop radio. And keep in mind, these can even be used with some android (not sure about Apple) phones and tablets so they can be used portable as well.
@forestgreenman7 жыл бұрын
For a wire strung in the trees would I use a single wire or a "T" shaped FM like wire antenna? I imagine the longer the wire the better? But I would think the length of the wires would effect the frequencies you can receive. It looks like you have some sort of dual wire thing going with your fan-tail, I think you called it, setup. Sorry for the "simple" questions but I am really new to this.
@SevenFortyOne7 жыл бұрын
For basic receiving signals the antenna configuration isn't really critical. Pretty much anything will work to some degree. An antenna that is cut to the proper length and polarized for the band/mode you want to listen to will work better. However, For just getting going with the RSP and learning the software almost any piece of wire over a few feet long should work well enough for you to receive something. The antenna I'm using is a fan dipole with elements cut for 3.700 MHZ and 7.200 Mhz that I use with my ham radios. It is designed to work best around those frequencies. However, on my RSP1A I can reliably receive signals from as far down as the bottom of the AM broadcast band (560KHz) all the way up into the VHF high band (162 MHZ). I guess what I'm trying to say is just use whatever antenna you can and see what happens. I'm fairly certain you'll be able to hear something. Once you get more comfortable with the radio, you can then put up "proper" antennas that will work better for the frequencies you are interested in listening to.

can i receive longwave (around 150-250khz) in europe?
@SevenFortyOne4 жыл бұрын
The radio will receive signals at these frequencies but whether or not you can hear them depends on your antenna, location, and other variables
