To your question yes smaller hooks can be a way to more fish because elephants eat peanuts so any fish can come to a smaller bait but if you put out a giant bait you will obviously miss the smaller fish that's fine if you say want your double digit conger and not keep catching whiting as to your line snapping you can up your trace line in diameter and still not put fish off with a smaller bait with smaller hooks and have more security as to your dongle rig try using full circle hooks and having the bait swinging loose off the bottom of the hook will hopefully keep it the line away from the wrasping ray mouth which will abrade the line quite quickly

What day were you down there? I think I saw you packing up, when I was out with the dog.

Unlucky! Looked a good fish too. More often than not the scratching rigs pick up the best fish.

Carp of 70lb are caught on size 4 or 5 hooks... so there's your answer..😉👍

That’s my thinking! John is a pretty high level carp angler (Welsh International) and it has me thinking about the cross over between the two. I appreciate casting a bait into the sea versus a lake/gravel pit/stocked waters is a hard comparison but on evidence of my last few sessions I’m tempted to trial smaller tactics regularly. Thanks Simon.

@@spooliganfishing welcome but i can't take credit my friend welsh angler Paul Yeates taught me in late 90s that you catch far more on small strong hooks.. One of his favourites was the Drennon short shank Aberdeen hooks.. An eye opener if ever..
