While it might not have the bark of the big Bristol, that engine is keeping this gorgeous plane in the air. Hats off to all involved.

Hey Doc - I think those pistons are of an R3350 engine (though might be the R2800), and sadly not the Bristol Centaurus originally fitted. Sadly? Well, a fact of time and sorting a prctical solution to keep it in the air... Sure looks and sounds great fitted with the Wright engine though!

One of my friends (ex Fleet Arm) always spoke about the Fury with great affection -he was responsible for maintaining the mighty engines. Stood by him while he watched one on display at an airshow - very dusty that day........

You can argue about that. I think it looks quite good and you can follow the movements well. But what it also shows is the aerodynamic quality of this aircraft. There's hardly any forwarded drag and therefore only a small amount of induced drag!

I live 50km away and got my dates wrong, missing it by one week. I rang a mate to ask if he was going this Saturday and he said it was last Saturday. Bummer. Nice of him to remind me. Thank goodness for YT. I hope there are even more aircraft next year. The T-28 flew over my home, so all was not lost.

I well remember these planes flying over the Nowra district in New South Wales, the home of the of the Fleet Air Arm. I well remember the big news in 1955 when an Auster took of from Bankstown airport without a pilot and after two failed attempts by the RAAF to shoot it down, the Navy despatched two Sea Furies to do the job! If you search youtube with words like runaway Auster or flyaway Auster you will be able to view a video of that episode.

Ahh, Sea Fury ! I still remember when we had one in NZ such an awesome big sky display aircraft and the Centaurus Engine was remarkably quiet for such a large mill. Does anyone know if this has been re-engined or retains the Bristol Centaurus ?

Ah, I see she is Wright Powered , a shame but understandable since spare sleeves for Centaurus engines are exceedingly rare apparently.

Having only ever heard a Centaurus 18 cylinder engine in person it is definitely a more richer range of melding tones as it flies through the sky. The P&W and Wright engines all have the american V8 kind of chugging sound even here with this example of tuned stack layout. It must have alot to do with the interspliced exhaust piping of the Centaurus and its twin porting per cylinder. All poppet valve stuff kind of sounds predictably alike by comparison.
