I really want to dedicate this video to our Patrons, because without them, you’d never hear a story like this one. Most long standing sailing KZbin channels can afford to continue sailing and documenting their journey because they can sustain themselves through it solely. Our channel is cost neutral because we can finance an editor thanks to our Patrons. But our life, expenses and bills are paid with the income we derive through our jobs (and to be honest, mostly through Ryan’s). Producing those videos still takes me a lot of time (see our video about how we make them happen: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGG3nWaQrLZnq7M) but we aren’t dependent on that revenue to continue talking about what sailing the world while working full-time really looks like. A lot of our sailing friends also work full-time, but don’t talk about it on KZbin because they wouldn’t have the time to tell their stories in the time- and energy consuming format that KZbin is. (maybe that’s a video I should make at some point?). It would probably be easier for us to only focus on the jobs that bring us an actual income, but I remember how back in 2015 when we started dreaming about this lifestyle, I wanted to hear what it REALLY is like (but also selfishly, I love making those films and connecting with you all 😉) We can afford to loose subscribers and viewers when we tackle those topics, because we aren’t financially dependent on our channel’s success. And for that, we have our Patrons to thank. So again, a massive thank you to all of you who support our channel, because I can honestly say that it wouldn’t exist without you ❤ (And again, thank you Lee-Ann. The cannolis meant so much to us, and especially that day 🥰)

tbh, it is the sheer time lost that is devoted to video production, the filming, the editing, etc, plus the cost of amera equipment and the Bandwidth costs for uploads, which have finished me off for attempting it, even before I start. After my Private Working Life Pension Pot was stolen by the European Union (this has happened to everyone in the EU, whether they realise it or not , leaving even State Pensions in deep trouble), all I am left with, is a basic State Pension, which is why the loss of my last Sailboat, was such a massive blow, as effectively everything I had was on and in that boat. It does look as though I should be able to get a tide me over Sailboat next year, as so the cheap Silver Bullion I bought years ago as insurance, finally starts paying off. But to live, and maintain the Boat properly, I should be able to manage within the limits of that Pension. So a Viseo Channel ? Pass. But I may do an occasional Text Blog with Still photos, and do an occasional review of products I have tested, and do a little selling of secondhand stuff that still works, to help others out more than anything. I have three winterised small 2 stroke Outboards I can start off with for example, each of which will be fully serviced before being sold. That sort of thing. So I should be able to easily live and travel using 4G LTE connections mostly. Frankly, I am very unimpressed with the state of Computer Model Weather Forecasting, and the Mr Weatherman Channel on KZbin, is a very notable exception to the Rule, and all Credit to his expertise and devotion. I've Lived and Survived via Barometer and observation so far, and now I have an electronic Barograph app as well. Things could be worse. Best Wishes, Fair Winds, and Safe Travels. Bob in Wales. 👍 ⛵️✨️✨️✨️❤️

Truly, another "Heart Felt" episode Sophie. The stress of both Ryan and you really came across, while trying to enjoy your lifestyle. Michael's Pastry shop in the North End is a legend, we live there and frequent often. The cannoli's from Modern looked fabulous, such a surprise as Polar Seal was docked at Constitution Wharf Marina. Bob Davidoff promoted this complex. The Navy yard is a close walk from the marina, giving Boston Historic advantage to their patrons. Again, thank you for sharing your life and hang in there, both are living "The Dream".

In the 1970's, I lived aboard a 24' sloop in Boston harbor with my wife year round for three years. One year at Lewis Wharf (the coldest winter in 50 years) and two at Constitution Marina (the historic blizzard of 1978). Amazing to see it all again. BTW, one reason why there is little wake there is that the Charles River dam is just on the other side of that bridge. Boats going through there have to lock in and out of the Charles river.

Love that Baby Barnacle!!! She got a job but she’s hedging on the haircut and a raise. She loves her peeps on their floating home orifice. The sparkles flying during the elimination of the pastry was awesome. Watched over and over knowing so well the convergence of molecular energy energizing your range of eye roll aptitude. Yes your soul has been retrieved from the rolling horizon at the first marina. Constants need their equilibrium too I guess. So glad y’all hung in there and made all that stuff happen that brings you back to now. Be safe and sane wherever you need to be. Love y’all.

I went back to work this year whilst we are cruising , the transition to not being able to take part in a lot of the sailing is a little frustrating but thank God for Starlink and Teams. I think a lot of KZbin channels don’t really know the influence that they have had on the boating community , there are a lot of sailboats like ours that wouldn’t be doing this unless it wasn’t for the likes of your videos showing it’s possible.

Starlink has been such a game changer for us and made our lives a lot more flexible. No more having to plan around meetings and calls, some of them can be taken while underway (although I'm still not a fan of being on cam while underway). It's not easy, but the reward makes all the efforts worth it!
@brownnoise357

Stugeron works when underway, but unfortunately is not available in the USA. Warning though, do Not take the recommended two tablet dose, or you are out for the count for at least 12 non Seasick hours. I take half a tablet routinely about 30 minutes before going aboard, and them another half tablet every morning with breakfast for 3 or 4 days depending on conditions, to get my sea legs. I have only ever been Seasick once, and that was in a Force 10 plus Gale, with Huge Seas in the Bay of Biscay, I was no use to Man or Beast, for about three and a half Days, and I don't think I have ever been so ill, and couldn't even keep a Polo mint down. An experience I have no wish to repeat. then Stugeron came out. I thinkmitvwas Yachting World that assisted with its development ? ❤ Bob, who has packets of Stugeron in each of the three First Aid Kits I usually have onboard. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️❤️

"Rolliest Marina Ever..." brought a smile to my face. I worked the last part of my professional life on the Boston industrial waterfront, and whenever the weather is from the east, the harbor offers little protection. Constitution Marina is a lovely spot, and I'm sad that you missed all of the cultural opportunities of being in the harbor, and I hope that you can get back there some day with a couple of weeks. Bon Chance.

BTW, it was so cool to meet the three of you at Annapolis, you are an inspiration. Keep the realistic boat life videos coming.

It has been six years since I run this KZbin channel, and it still isn't our "bread and butter". It is a passion project that greatly enhances our experience, but in terms of making a living, it is not what it looks like. With that said, it is an amazing way to create memories and keep a log of the events that occurred while making a lot of new friends, and develop filmmaking skills! So if you have a desire to start a channel, you should absolutely do it :) Not everything is about money, and while I find it challenging sometimes to balance my cost-neutral activity (KZbin) with my money-making job in terms of time, I love where I'm at :)

So, I have been binging sailing videos because I am over 'it' and have similar plans to you two... This was the third video I watched of yours (after the solo crossing ones because I am a single.. so that is what I want to learn about) the funny thing about this video is that I live across the greenway from that first rolly marina you stayed at. I really appreciate honest videos like this because I also am not a trust fund baby.... and mama has to pay the bills. It would be great to not be paying Boston Level bills though.

I was in Boston during mid-winter for a construction meeting. My hotel room overlooked a frozen marina. Sailboats with snow piled up on them and bubblers keeping the marina water from freezing and crushing hulls. After the meeting, a couple of the guys headed out to go ice fishing. That sounded like going to a frozen hell to me. Meanwhile, I flew back to New Orleans and raced our sailboat in the Sugar Bowl Regatta in very pleasant weather. I love living down south. I grew up in New Orleans, eating delicious French pastries. They were like pastries from heaven. My favorites are the moulin a vent, fresh fruit tarts and anything with patisserie. These days the best French pastry shops in New Orleans are Vietnamese and just as delicious.

Very much enjoyed this episode as it was very open and transparent about how you guys manage your cruising lifestyle. I find too many channels create an illusion that simply isn't believable, or at least, relatable, and I've started to unsubscribe from those. You guys are doing a version of what many of us are doing, which is still maintaining careers so you can afford to cruise. Can very much relate to the situation of having to attend on-line meetings down below while underway while the spouse is at the helm commanding the boat. Interesting anecdote about Teams and Zoom being able to filter out background noise. I'm always so careful to conduct my calls in the forward stateroom where I have to close the door for fear those on the call are going to hear the rumbling of our Yanmar. I'll have to do a test and see if I am able to move out into the salon on future calls. Thanks for the tip! Will continue to hang as a subscriber to you guys. Cheers.
@RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 11 ай бұрын
Do the test with Zoom or Teams and you will be amazed! As for your initial comment, I think that a lot of channels are simply financially dependent on maintaining the illusion of the dream life at the risk of coming across as "complainy" (which always happens to us anytime I post a video that's a little more "realistic"). But also maybe they create a virtuous circle that forces them to do fun things for them to film? All I know is that "living the dream" comes at a very high cost for us, and I find it to be a disservice to everyone to pretend that it's not the case.

Such an interesting view into your lives. We're trying to figure out how to achieve this, first for just next summer. I find working remotely to be challenging, even when it's just for a month. It takes so much more organization, especially when my clients are in a different time zone. I never feel like those relaxed instagramers on the beach in Bali with their laptop. I'm more of the stress case trying to secure internet connection and juggling SIM cards. But I'm definitely grateful that it's even an option these days. I hope the financing deal came through for Dakota Lithium. Seems like a great company.

I relate 100% to your comment. While I am so grateful that we have all those wonderful travel experiences, I find it super stressful to manage inconsistent remote work with the inherent inconsistency of sailing as a lifestyle. Ultimately, the rewards of traveling keep us going, but every year, I need a few months of land break to maintain my sanity :p

I often wonder about the long term viability of being live aboard charter captains. There are a lot of expenses on a boat, might as well write them off and physically use the boat to make money when needed. Not having seen examples of this on KZbin, it makes me doubt if it would work. What’s your opinion?

I want to know yours and Ryan's thoughts regarding circumnavigating the world on your 40ft Beneteau. It's technically a lightweight sailboat built for coastal cruising, and while it has an "A" (ocean going) certification, how has it performed in strong winds and heavy seas? Many say B's creak and groan a lot, and slam into waves, given the boat's light weight and keel. Thoughts? Thanks! Edit. Yeah, having to work sucks. Deadlines suck too. But, I know you're living the dream!
