Back when I did my dive masters, I was taught to rub the spines in, because they break so easily into microscopic pieces and the body can then safely absorb them, as the material is just basically calcium. Any attempt to dig those out by breaking the skin, would just open a passage way for a possible infection. Though, I did my masters in a country, where it was more dangerous to see a doctor, than not. I've watched one after another try to dig out an urchin spine, because it looks so sturdy, but in reality, it breaks like dry grass. It looks like it could be something like what a porcupine spine is, but it's so much more brittle. The way it penetrates the skin is by it's sharpness. The spines are so thin, you can't see the very tip

As a corpsman in the navy we removed sea urchin spines from some of the crew when we visited the Seychelles.

Could you have also used glue or wax and “peeled-off” the splinters? Like cactus splinters? 🤔

Hi Doc, small tip I treated it more than hundred times with ichtimol creme (Ammoniumbituminosulfonat) and they come out in 2-3 days to surface no need to remove with needle.

I am assuming the doxy is to cover for Vibrio. Am I on the right track?
@oneseeker25 ай бұрын
Doxy is a great antibiotic for uti and skin infections

. Did a couple of years in ED many moons ago. I remember a clinical elective in the Bahamas where with sea urchin spines I was taught to soak the foot in hot water to deactivate the toxins and make them easier to remove. Is this true??
@lmellick5 ай бұрын
Yes, that is part of the recommendations if there is significant pain from toxins.

I was wondering if there was some trick. Nope. Big needle, scraping, gouging, ok got it.

Happened to me as a kid. (Grew up in the Dominican Republic) I didn't feel it till the next day at school. The teacher came at me with a big needle.. I told her I would do it myself! I didn't trust anyone else and got it out myself. It wasn't from a live one. Was from a dead one up on the sand. I must have been like 8 or 9 years old. Lol didn't get a tetanus shot 🤷♀️ but have gotten plenty in later years while working with animals. Lol

Really? No gloves???
@lmellick5 ай бұрын
We did put on gloves at one moment in time, but in the end we never actually directly touched the wounds with our hands. Nevertheless, the heat made it hard to put on gloves due to the perspiration.
@robbjr78795 ай бұрын
This is the Dominican and supplies are sparse. On the medical missions I've been on we had 25 pairs of gloves for the entire trip so we saved them for the most invasive procedures like internal examinations and gaping or actively bleeding wounds. Also, most gloves are no cleaner than hands if you perform hand hygiene adequately.

@@robbjr7879gloves are ppe for personnel. wash hands, gloves on. gloves off, wash hands. It prevents us from coming into contact with potentially infectious/hazardous material.
