I was born and raised in Hillsboro, OR and every Summer, my Dad would take us camping up and down the Coast but, we never once stopped at Seal Rock. When my wife and I went on our Honeymoon in Newport, we stopped at every State Park we could and when we stopped at Seal Rock at about 8:30am and walked up the trail, it opened up to the most beautiful scene there! The Sun had just reached up over the hills behind us and cast an orange glow onto the rocks. We only had a small camera but, the pictures were fantastic! On my next visit, I will make sure to have a panoramic camera because THAT shot will be phenomenal!

When your camera, fell into the sand and sea water, I really felt bad because I did the exact same thing a couple of years back at Arches N.P. I was Standing on the sidewalk at Park Avenue, and unlatched the brand new camera and lens without first latching onto them with my hand! The tripod was fully extended when the camera and lens fell on to the concrete. Thank goodness for the lens shade. It went into about a hundred pieces but it prevented any damage to the lens or the camera. I watch a lot of your vids. Very pro. Keep it up.

If you can find a craft store like Michael's they sell silica for drying flowers. You would need to wrap your camera in paper towels and tape it around the seams so the silica doesn't get inside any slots etc. But it works! It usually takes about 24 to 48 hours to dry things out though. It's worth a shot. Good luck!!!

When I do shots near the ocean, I also carry a small bottle of Distilled Water with me just in case my camera takes a nose dive into the water and sand. I can used the water to rinse of the sand and salt, and then use my towel to dry everything off. It's a good fix until you can get home and really clean things out.

Exactly what I was thinking. Granted, salt water is a lot more damaging than fresh, but, if a drop into such a shallow bit of water is enough to render the 5DOA, it doesn’t say much for its purported weather sealing.

I shoot at Seal Rock often since I live nearby, and have been thwarted too many times by the "marine layer", but also by the legs of my tripod quickly sinking into the sand if the tripod legs are in the water. Do you have a method you use to prevent or slow that from happening? Great video also!

The trick is 1 use spikes on your feet, 2 with that first wave, push the tripod down as deep as you can, the next wave won’t move it

Nick sorry to see your camera take a fall man that sucks. I just wanted to warn you of a similar situation I was in. I had a 7d Mark II that fell into some water and Canon said they will not work on a camera with evidence of water damage. So I tried a third party repair facility and got the same response this time with a bit more explanation. They said corrosion in the camera may continue to grow over time and your camera could malfunction again and they are not able to warranty their repairs. That said I looked at Canon's web site and saw I could order parts so I bought a whole new back panel and LCD screen and fixed it myself for like $140. The camera is still working great 2 years later. If you need anymore info reach out I'm happy to try and help if you need.

Hi nick i saw your interview with photography TV, in that interview about photo retouching, you told it is better use exposure blending in photoshop instead of put down highlights (-100) and raise up shadows (+100) in Lightroom because lot of details will be lost from noise introduction (if i remember good). So i ask you if you have time, please can you make a video about this, you take a photo and retouch it with photoshop and with lightroom and show the differences if any about the two softwares. I ask this because a lot of others photographers use this method on landscapes, telling also that doesn't always use them at 100%. I use often lightroom and i ask you if instead of using hightlights and shadows in the basic panel (at that level 100%) i use a brush and locally (on portion of the photo) i change that i get the same results that i will get with exposure blending in photoshop ? If yes, please again make a video about it. Thanks for your work, i really appreciate that you and others photography do for us (i follow also Thomas Heaton, Antony Morganti, Serge Ramelli and so on). Also i'm interested to know if you use Lightroom maybe together Photoshop to retouch your photos or you only use Photoshop.

thanks to you and the time you spend on us, i really appreciate your and other photographers work. I spend more time seeing your videos than shooting, i think the best thing to do is going out to shot photos, always or when someone has time, i hardly can get out at sunrise or sunset, but sometimes i don't do it because time is not so good or bad sky or ... I found always something to don't get out to shot photos and prefer to see what others do. I'm happy you take my idea and i will wait for your video, i prefer use only one software and for now i use lightroom only and would like to see if it is powerful enough on exposure blending like photoshop. Thanks again for your time.

I - always - keep a strap on my camera and the strap around my neck. When I put the camera on the tripod, only after I - know - it is securely clamped on the tripod do I use the quick-release buckle to free the strap from the camera. When I'm ready to release the camera, I re-connect the strap - first. Why am I obsessive like this? Don't ask. :) As they say, you can learn from the mistakes of others, or you can be one of the others. Thanks for the courage to show your accident Nick.

I remember being at Seal Rock at low tide when a Spring storm was coming onshore. The waves would blast into the rocks and get stopped. It was freaky and scary to stand on the land side of the rocks and watch the 20 ft waves heading at you only to have the rocks block them. Was it a little foolish? Probably, but the rocks seemed to be blocking the waves pretty consistently.
