If you're only a citizen of say the UK, if you go into international waters you have to follow UK law as you'll likely be on a British boat of ship. If it was any other way you could boat 12 miles out, murder someone and come back without repercussions... For non serious crimes i doubt anyone in power would prosecute, like if you smoked weed however having said that police won't bother you in this country for that anyone

@@theboringsalami9683 if my memory serves me right, a german guy by the name of achenbach hired a bunch of german and dutch mercenaries equipped with boats and helicopters to invade it while the prince and his wife were in england, and they took the prince's son (the current prince) hostage. the prince's son ended up taking stashed weapons and in return taking achenbach and his men hostage. a german diplomat went to sealand to negotiate michael giving them up and michael says this was de facto recognition of sealand by germany. since then the german guy set up a government-in-exile which was selling illegal passports and using sealand as a front for drug trafficking in iran and russia so the prince of sealand had to declare that all passports, sold by sealand themselves or achenbach, were illegal

Correction to your title, Germany had actually officially recognized Sealand as a nation after the assault on Sealand in August of 1878, after the Sealandic armed forces (i'm not joking, it was like, a 4 person army) took a hostage, a diplomat then went to Sealand and negotiated with Roy Bates for the release of the hostage, which was a de facto recognition of Sealand by Germany... After a long while, Britain also declared that Sealand was an independent nation from it... -Also, as of 2013, Sealand has 27 residents... Not "a few" -Sealand has a territory of 3 square miles -It has it's own data haven (personally run internet(it does not rely on Britain's internet)) -It was not a story of a man who wouldn't deal with "the man", Roy Bates ran a radio station that broadcast Rock n Roll because the BBC would not, many of these "Pirate Stations" existed, but when Britain started arresting people running them, Bates declared his home (He and his family lived on Roughs sea base for awhile before Sealand was founded) a new country, so he could keep running his radio station -Sealand technically has a military, but it entirely consist of the Bates family, meaning the military consists of high-ranking government officials

Thanks for the effort, but I know all that. Despite people's wishful thinking, Sealand is not officially recognized by any other country, not by Germany, which only sent a diplomat over there to somehow solve that hostage situation, and certainly not by the UK, which just sticks to ignoring it nowadays. Also, that data haven doesn't exist anymore, Sealand doesn't have a steady number of residents, and if your military consists of like five people, you might as well have no military. But again, thanks for contributing to the conversation. I really appreciate it when someone takes the time to comment something interesting.

Sealand's status as a real country is more up in the air than that of 99% of micro-nations. Interesting story, really. Some idiots tried to take over Sealand, but they managed to overpower and capture the invaders. Sealand may not have had any official recognition as a country before this, but, as a result of holding the prisoners captive, a diplomat was sent, and from that simple fact; that an official diplomat was officially sent to negotiate, they have more legal ground to stand on as being a recognized country than any other self-claimed nation I know of. ,

Realistically there is 3 ways to succeed: 1. take an area no one wants it (either it has no resources or is safety hazard); 2. have sufficient &/ big enough "friends" who either allow it or scare the opposition away; 3. have the means (weapons) to force everyone to leave you alone lest they lose more than what would be gained. Taking an area not claimed by others that has useful resources and is not a hazard either is only viable if one has at least 2, 3 or both, because otherwise someone not necessarily friendly will come and annex the place by force.

Even then acquiring either 2 or 3 would be essential prior to any substantial development, substantial development occurring would violate 1 once your population starts making money by any means humans with jobs are a natural resource that nations call taxpayers which means you now have something they want.

There was a tiny raid, which technically counts as foreign relations. So if anyone cared to follow the treaty they’d be a country. But unless the owners get a notable deterrent against invasion it will continue to be ignored, specifically a few cruise missiles and an anti-air system (a laser would be the best option so that they needn’t import ammo).

All Sealand has to do is make deals with Russia and China, allowing them to station weapons in Sealand. Not only would this almost guarantee a friendship with two of the strongest nations in the world, but it would probably also frighten Western Europe so much ashy they would attempt to make deals with them. But still, Russia, China and all their allies are probably still enough to guarantee becoming a real nation, and then you can start expanding your platform. It’s not a foolproof plan, but it’s better than what they have now.

State and nation are entirely different concepts. A nation is a group of people that shares history, language, culture and cultural heritage. A state requires people, power and territory by Jellinek's classical definition or recognition by other states by more modern international relation based definitions. It's important to note that power here doesn't mean military power, but power within its territory and over its population. This kind of power is necessary for statehood. A nation doesn't have to be the population of only one country. During the German partition it was widely recognised that there was only one German nation, but two German states. In the decades following WW2 a majority of Austrian citizens didn't see themselves as members of an Austrian nation, but rather as members of the German nation. The population of a state doesn't need to be made up of one nation only. Belgium and Switzerland both have populations that aren't nations by classical definitions, but three groups that could be considered nations on their own. However, Switzerland is a typical example of a so called nation of will. This means that even tho there is no shared language their will of belonging together and forming a nation is so deeply embedded in their culture that they kind of do form a nation.

The concept that sovereignty is more than just the reality that other countries recognize ones legitimacy, but rather the ability to defend their own existence from the threats of other nations, calls into question the legitimate sovereignty of countless nations around the world. Sure, seal and could be literally blown off the map, but with the weapons of today wielded by many, there’s a multitude of states that could be turned into craters within a day. The Vatican’s Swiss Guard is not much in terms of a military force, and their territory exists almost entirely at the permission of Italy. Yet few would doubt its statehood. Similar stories can be made for states like Monaco, San Marino, etc. even states like North Korea exist only at the pleasure of their key allies. Were China to grow fatigued of Korea, they could likely occupy the whole state by the end of this week, or simply cease the trade that keeps the DPRK alive and let it collapse on its own within a short time. Many nations only exist because legitimacy is granted to them by larger powers. Sovereignty for most states is something given to them, not gained by them.

bigjake360t nukes are a great deterrent. You can’t put an invasion down when they’ve got that kind of counterpunch queued up. However when you need to acquire something they don’t help as much. Especially when you are talking to another nation with nukes (China) or a close ally of a nation with nukes. (S. Korea) and North Korea isn’t a self sufficient country. They can’t exist without help due to their inability to produce the necessary resources to sustain themselves. They are very much so still stuck at the mercy of China to keep them alive.
