Watch out for your lungs with that stuff it will damage them, wear your mask at all times. Great job and good coaching skills with your brother. That roof could also do with a coat of paint, as a sealer. It'll keep it snug and water tight like a frogs posterior. ty for the video. sealing up that chimney now you can cook some bacon and eggs without water flowing down.

chopped strand mat does not go with epoxy, so it stays white. It needs styrol to solve the strands of the mat an the white (binding) will disappear. Only use stitched or woven mats with epoxy

The best way to carry tools, equipment, and supplies to and from a marine vessel is in 18 inch by 12 inch plastic shopping baskets. Buy six you will be glad you did.

for sealing them flanges cut out all old sealant clean well and use marine 3M 5200 fast CURE it never drys hard, i use it all the time.. it the only one to use on marine.. or the 4200
@EISAlaska3 жыл бұрын
5200 works great. We mostly reserve its use for underwater thru-hulls. We notice above the waterline that it tends to pull away in areas if its not sandwiched tight enough, so we've started using silicone on most of our flanges. It doesn't have the holding power of 5200, but for temporary fixtures it saves us energy later on.

As long as its a solid boat with reliable machinery you're golden. It doesn't have to look pretty to catch fish, as long as your able to operate it safely. Good luck if you go for it Loren!

what about a new layer of fiberglass & paint? too expensive or time consuming? thanks for your DIY video!
@EISAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Yep, we'll get around to it, mostly it was just to seal current leaks in the cabin.

I would think that if you wetted the surface before you applied the fiberglass cloth you would workout better in your application.

I don’t know if there is a market for the instrumentation and antennas you are removing, but I would think that you could have sold most of the stuff you removed today with a little cleanup effort.

Have to say I am an epoxy sort of guy particularly for repairs but I guess she's a work boat EH!
@EISAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Epoxy is strong for sure, unfortunately polyester doesn't form a chemical bond to it, so we tend to shy away from it.
@TheBeaker593 жыл бұрын
@@EISAlaska I get that but for repairs on old Polyester, epoxy sticks so much better and if glassing over the repair then Epoxy resin is far far better than polyester. Polyester is very average for repairs over old polyester which also won't form a chemical bond to itself if old. Only advantage of Polyester is its cheaper. I am an industrial chemist in the resin industry. Polyester is the best for new builds in straight GRP after that its epoxy all the way.
@EISAlaska3 жыл бұрын
@@TheBeaker59 Problem with epoxy is that you can't use polyester on top of it. Gelcoat won't stick to it, which means you need to paint everything. It is expensive and the setup/ curing time is very long compared to polyester. If surfaces are prepped right, the bond for polyester is fine and will not fail or delaminate. Many vessels in the Alaska fleet have been lengthened and sponsoned using poly. Decades later they show no signs of problems.
