I find it interesting that they called a yellow-orange color the "Flesh" color. I got used to seeing Jaune Brilliant being labelled as the skin color. Not that I'm complaining, I always end up not using the color because it has a white pigment mixed in and is usually very opaque so this was quite refreshing to see.
@AllanJayQuesada4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this yellow orange just needs white to be called 'Jaune Brilliant'. Not a fan of it too. I have always preferred the real Naples Yellow that uses a single pigment, PBr24 That's ba beautiful yellow for skin base. 🙏🏻🎨

I dunno if anyone will find this info helpful but if you want to have clean, flat swatches or washes like seen on Kuya Allan's videos, I recommend getting watercolor paper made with cotton. Even something like Fabriano's 200gsm paper is better than Corona or Canson's 200gsm paper. I just found this out while playing around with my watercolors and gouache the other day and I thought I should share it because of how many times I gave up on a painting due to it looking streaky as hell. For wood pulp watercolor paper, I think it would be better left for gouache paintings where you plan to use the paint more thickly.
@getthatkatching32524 жыл бұрын
Yes, Fabriano is much better than Canson and Corona. Both Canson and Corona can't handle much layers (I can only do 6-9 layers) and they will have those weird paper crumbs. Also when I used both, I noticed that they are for loose pieces only as the water dries really fast. As for Fabriano, it is the TOTAL OPPOSITE; it has 25% cotton so the colors are brighter. Also, it is more forgiving as it will give you enough time to work on your piece (the water won't dry fast :>>>>). PS: I can work as much as 12 layers with Fabriano (I'm using a soft brush, I think that's why)
@aleahlrb4 жыл бұрын
@replicanna Depending on where you buy, Canson and Fabriano's 200gsm papers seem around the same price range. The most difference I've found is around 10-15 pesos. If you're exchanging sizing and 25% cotton for a small up in price, then I think it's worth it. I haven't tried nor encountered the Clairefontaine paper you're referring to, though. I might try to look into it.
@aleahlrb4 жыл бұрын
@@getthatkatching3252 Yes! I noticed that the water doesn't dry as fast when I'm putting my first light wash layer! It also helps that I can do as many layers as I want because I often try to use multiple layers for rendering. And I can also lift colors as easily. This one fact I found while doing an art activity in school. I was imaptient and decided to just put a wash onto the paper then simply lift up to get the highlights I wanted. I was sure I didn't use a staining color but the color didn't budge at all. I kinda hoarded a bunch of Canson paper when I was starting, though, because it was the first brand I found, so I still have about a pack and a half left to use up (I'm currently trying to practice gouache on them).

Dear Allan, thank you again for another review! I do have a small question regarding your set. I bought the 12 half pan set from SeamiArt on Aliexpress begin this year and they have been fun to use. However, mine have a rather strong chemical smell to them when the paints are wet (disappears when dry, also on my paintings), and I'm wondering if yours have any kind of smell to them?
@AllanJayQuesada4 жыл бұрын
Hi, you're very welcome, Xiao. Mine also has this smell, but the smell is not bothering.. smells like my usual school supplies. The smell is there dry or or wet. But on paper, the smell goes away. If it bothers you, you way spray some scented alcohol on some book pages, and press the painting in there overnight. It should help manage the smell and flatten your painting as well.
@Xiaoru58914 жыл бұрын
@@AllanJayQuesada Oh! You can do that with scented alcohol? I didn't know that, thanks for the tip! The smell doesn't bother me that much tbh, but I was curious because my first wc set didn't have that smell. Thanks for answering!

Who has ever seen a blue shamrock!?! If it were up to me, I'd rename that grey to "smog". If it doesn't spread, does that mean it lacks ox gall? I know holbein is similar - they forego it in their paints but you can buy it as an additive.
@AllanJayQuesada4 жыл бұрын
Yeahh. I was also wondering why they had to name it shamrock. Hehe. Smog's a cool name for that grey. Well, many paint brands move well even without oxgall. Probably because the binder and even the pigments are lighter or finer. Maybe there are other factors that make this paints really heavy.. like extenders? I'm interested to getting a bottle of oxgall for a certain project, but i wont put it in this paints, as the oxgall is more expensive than these paints. Haha. Maybe id put it in (yes) my Holbein.

@AllanJayQuesada4 жыл бұрын
Hi. Prang watercolors is still better than Reeves. If you have time, try watching the comparison portion of my last 2-3 reviews.. i compare awatches of the 50+ sets ive reviewed in a ranked order. Since you said, you're not using the paints professionally, i assume, lightfastness is not your priority. For 800, the most decent set you can get is the Sonnet watercolors, 16 colors full pans, around 700+. It's student grade but great too. For 800, you can score on some pro grades too but you'll be limited to 3-4 tubes only let's say of Holbein. There are cheap sets that offer vibrant colors like Seamiart and Superior but those paints dont provide pigment codes. Those codes are important to learn early on incase you upgrade intime to artist grade paints. 🎨🙏

I appreciate the tutorial but I just want to point out that Carmine is not Magenta. Carmine is usually a red closer to magenta as it "has" a bit of pink but I have never seen a brand call it Magenta. Preng's Red Violet looks on camera to be a true Magenta, maybe in real life it isn't but on camera seems to be. I know that Van Gogh's Permanent Red Violet is their Magenta as they said so themselves. Semiart semidry number 22 seems to be magenta and 28 (or is it 18? hard to tell) looks carmine. Miya Himi peach looks like a lighter version of magenta.
@AllanJayQuesada2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you're right. Carmine here is certainly not magenta-like. The purple here is close to an opaque quin magenta or a lilac. Magenta is a pure hue making it a primary color for inks along with yellow and cyan.
