This is why I have the Circle of Fifths printed and posted on my wall for easy reference. It helps me understand the chord relationships while simultaneously playing them,, reinforcing which major/minor chords go together. If you aren't familiar with the Circle of Fifths, learn it. And learn CAGED!!!

CAGED actually has nothing to do with music theory at all

Can also use the circle of fifths counter clockwise 4ths to learn/remind the notes on any fret, say B flat on 6th string, Bb Eb Ab Db then for 2nd string start one above Bb so F Bb or use tuning to remember circle of 5ths in 4ths from E, E A D G move to 1st fret C F, Top of 1st Fret F Bb Eb Ab move to 2nd Db Gb Top of 2nd Gb B E.

@@leveractiongypsy1848 ok. I didn't say it did. It does have instructive value as an organizing system for the guitar fretboard.

@@Wilterweight Not as much as people think and more so I'd say it gets in the way of connecting the fretboard to theory. At least thats what I've seen teaching guitar,bass, voice songwriting and music theory for over 25 yrs. Take it all with a grain of salt if you want I teach for a living I know what I'm doing and get results for people. If it has no connection to music theory when you do get advanced enough in your understanding of theory and 'try' to find ways to 'organizing the fretboard' to music theory....you'll understand what I'm talking about and will likely looks for something else besides CAGED

Your theory helped connect so many dots for me and opened me up to the world of theory and actually understanding it but not only that, being able to use it in a practical sense too. Times iv been on stage and suddenly my brain has a giant fart and I forget the song. I fall back on theory and I know just by looking I can go in a few directions and all will sound "correct". Much love from Wales, UK.

So this hack makes it easy to modulate from one key to the next, and it can be useful for finding chords outside the key that will sound good. Thanks for the epiphany.

I never thought of this, but it actually makes sense: Each note is the 5th of its 4th, and it's also the 4th of its 5th, because 4th is the opposite of 5th.

Hey Sean, just wondering if you have any tips for taking a loop you’ve written and turning it into a song. I make lots of 8-16 bar loops I like but have trouble making into a full song. Thanks

I'll try. Key of G chords 1, 4, 5 is G C D. Key of C 1, 4, 5 chords is C F G. Key of D 1, 4, 5 chords is D G A. All 1 4 5 chords in the major scale are major chords. G is the 1 chord in the key of G, the 5 chord in the key of C, and the 4 chord in the key of D. So this opens up the possibility for changing key in a song. Here is a chord progression in the key of G modulating into the Key of D: G C D D G A. I think you can play in the key of G and put in chords F and A which are outside the key and get away with it. You are going to have to test that. You might be able to substitute C with F and D with A. Examples: key of G GFD, or GCA chord progressions. I haven't tried this. I'm just guessing. See if it works.

Sean, I really like your channel. You have a great sense of humor and a unique perspective on music. I think you’re a fantastic musician and instructor. The only thing that I don’t like is when you disparage other musicians. I watched Samurai Guitarist’s “Hot Takes” video and you and Rhett were the only one’s to single out other musicians and criticize them. I think Rhett may have had a few drinks, however, that’s not an excuse for being disrespectful. You don’t get to the top without some kind of talent and talent doesn’t ensure success. It’s OK to qualify your personal preferences, but to say any successful musician “sucks” is just in bad taste. I still love your channel! I just wish you were a bit more gracious.

When you were talking about the U2 song simple 1 to 4 chord change, Isn't some form of 1/4 tonic subdominant is the bases of most chord changes in all its various substitutions, eg.. 90% of the blues progression is 1/4 and uses the 5 to bring it around.

As for a C chord 135 vs 461 those are numbers of each scale/key the chord is made from if took it to a 13 chord, C in the Key of C would be C E G B D F G and starting from the fourth in Key of G would be C E G B D F# G Technically both C's are different with there 11ths. And key of F 5 7 2 C E G Bb D F G.

So... for in each key.... the 1,4 and 5 notes that make up the pentatonic scale will have the root note within its scale... ?? Did I get that backwards??
@feedrdev
@feedrdev Жыл бұрын
He was explaining in terms of the major scale, not pentatonic (which is a subset of the major or minor scale). The 1, 4 and 5 notes in a major key make up the 3 major chords of the key. And when you take the 4 and make it a 1 (in its own major scale/key) then the 1 from the original scale becomes its 5th (it's just math: subtract 3 from both 4 and 1 and you get 1 and -2(+7)=5. For the 5 it's more complicated. The old 1 becomes its 4th (same math 5-4=1; 1-4=-3(+7)=4. That's what was said in the video. What wasn't mentioned that the 4 becomes a flat 7 in the key of 5, so it's technically not in the major scale of the 5 chord. It has to do with the fact there are actually just 12 half-intervals and not 14 in one whole octave.
