I think the reason Darryl did not get promoted is the same reason Jim did not become manager again. They do not want one of the straight characters to hold the role because then half of the source of comedy is gone.

I think that’s also why the Andy-California combination was chosen. You have a relatively more normal guy who can sell mooossst of the heartfelt manager scenes but is still whacky enough to be mined for comedy and a more mysterious and darker but still funny in how people react to him guy who’s the one really replacing the “crazy/weird boss” role that Michael filled but in a radically different take on that basic concept

I started watching the Office in my first or second semester in college, right when these episodes premiered. Because of this, these were my first episodes I’ve ever seen, and they’ll always hold a very special place in my heart as the episodes that got me into the series!

I hate the way the writers diminished Jo's business savvy. She clearly is a successful, smart CEO, yet they have her hire unqualified bosses. I find it hard to believe she would recommend Nellie, be bamboozled by Robert, or reward DeAngelo, a stranger with zero sales experience, just because he rescued her dogs.

I find this episode hilarious but also infuriating. Jo didn't seem particularly interested in making a good decision. But I think it's pretty cool that Ultron ran the Office for awhile, lol.

5:20 - oooooh I actually didn't know that. It's pretty cool how involved the producers of the show were in adapting real life into this 'world' .. the characters felt like real people and you related to someone on some level 👌🏽 that's probably why they were able to steal so many people's hearts

Most of the general interview questions I ask are "how would you deal with a stressful situation at work." If someone told me they have a sure fire plan to increase sales, they would provide some information about that.

This is the episode where Robert California was an amazing character. If they'd kept him as a Svengali type conman like he was here, season 8 would've been *much* better for him. It's puzzling what they actually did with him later.

Oh god manager Gabe would’ve been funny now that you’ve brought it up, though I think Andy was a better choice for the guy looking to put himself between the branch and California in order to protect them from his craziness now that the CEO is the “weird boss” in the show, a dynamic I think really works for season 8 Season 9 on the other hand probably could’ve done to shuffle Dwight into the manager spot sooner

It felt wrong. This is the same guy who got put in a closet for playing computer games at work and took off for Thailand with no notice to his job in Season 5. He has no high ground at all.

Man I think Gabe would’ve actually been a good person to take over as manager. He’s definitely a highlight of the last 3 seasons and the only new character who actually could’ve fit into the office universe from the beginning seemlessly. He’s different enough from Michael to where people wouldn’t write him off as a Michael Scott copycat/stand-in, while still having some similar characteristics as Michael. And he had enough complexity to dive farther into over time and have it be interesting, because he’s a pretty strange character.

Catherine Tate was a big deal before she did Doctor Who. She had her own sketch show in the UK which was frickin hilarious. If you aren't familiar with her, check out her sketch called The Offensive Translator, it's very very funny

Hey! Interesting question. Might be a lot of different answers, so I'll say what it means to me. "Meta" in film/tv/video games are self-referential...or in other words...scenes, lines, jokes, or the entire premise of the story work to expose that there is a layer beyond what you're seeing on screen; there are writers, producers, actors, set dressing, editors, etc. Deadpool is an easy example of a meta film, as breaking the fourth wall and confirming that the audience is watching a movie. When I say that Search Committee is a "meta episode", I'm saying that everything happening on screen is commentary on everything that happened off screen. A search for what to do after Steve Carell (Michael Scott) left actually happened, and it included Paul Lieberstein (Toby). Andy (Ed Helms) gets the promotion in the end, because he already worked there and had the loftiest credentials.

3:30 Ryan being a hypocrite was annoying. You were put in a closet because you were badmouthing your boss and playing computer games. But that was just Ryan after Season 5. One dimensional serotype who used to be an engaging character. And the office randomly turning doesn't track. They never blamed Michael for their crappy lives in that way; its just here for tension and doesn't fit. And honestly, everything Gabe said about Andy, a notoriously subpar salesman with insecurity, instability, sexual harassment, and documented anger issues, is not a good fit for leadership. But story said otherwise. Gabe got so screwed. The interviews are really funny besides Kelly, who's just an annoying diva at this point. No version of that girl is every funny in fiction or nonfiction. Mixed positive but I have a lot of fun with this one especially with the UK Office connectivity and Arrested Development tie in. 13:26 Respect, Mulverine. Respect.

Spader had an additional appearance in Seinfeld when he was the addict going thru the 12 step program, and he was on step 9 apologizing to everyone. He apologizes to Jerry and other people but never apologized to George for making fun of him when George wanted to borrow his sweater but Spader didnt want to let him use it cause George's fat head when ruin it 😅. He was a full on guest star in that episode, real Robert California-esk in that episode too.
