I’d say yes to collecting a queen and starting your own captive colony. If you do and the colony thrives, that queen could produce other queens that you can let go and increase the numbers of endemic ants. If the endemic ants number are big enough they can fight off invasive ants.
@Taylorswiftvibes-x5o3 жыл бұрын
i think your idea is awesome but we have to think about what happens if there are to many ants. They could kill all the bugs and other endemic ants.

Also another option that has not been suggested yet, is the large off-site land he bought, if he got enough ants before he goes to visit the land he could take a few with him and release them onto the large amount of propert where there should be plenty of room for more ants

If anyone could provide them with a high quality of life in captivity, it's you. Besides, it's not a stretch to think that colony would also then become a part of the work this channel does inspiring more people to take notice of and interest in entomology, which could be the beginning of a butterfly effect into new discoveries.

@thwompalot50003 жыл бұрын
I did some casual research on the blue ant. You're not lying, they're pretty rare and exceptionally rare in captivity. It's a species we could learn a lot about. If you have the chance to attempt a captive colony there's some real questions about them that perhaps you'd be able to answer. I don't just think it would be cool to see, but there's a real chance you could further our understanding of them and may be able to add to their conservation.

If you did find a queen you would be helping it more than you would be harming it. Queens have like a 1% chance of founding into a colony but in captivity chances are exponentially risen. So you catching a queen that would potentially not make it in the wild should not have an impact

I think someone needs to study nuptial seasons of the elusive blue ants so he can book another stay at that house. Capturing a queen ant feels like he's just giving her the best chance to succeed in making a colony. I couldn't imagine it any other way. I believe the ball of white fuzz was a spider mite nest. You can see the wisps of a mite's web trailing off the pinchers. If you look closely, you'll see a couple mites riding the web, looking for the perfect opportunity to take flight. They excrete a small ball of fuzz like a cotton ball balloon to catch the breeze and float away. More impressive is their ability to control their flight and navigate the air turbulence efficiently, like a finely tuned fighter jet. For the last 2 years I've been learning to live with them in my garden and, sadly, in my home. My desire is to understand more about their species by observing their behaviors, their motivations, their strategies for survival, and the environments they thrive in. There is so much to learn.

I've seen those personally, in a mountain near my home, though I didn't realize how rare and unstudied they are. They seem solitary, and rather docile. They look like a couple of small, plump blueberries stuck together, wandering about. I didn't think much of them, beyond their blue hue and plumpness. I want to say they are about half an inch long, but it may have been smaller; I didn't bother checking them out closely.

I've loved ants all my life, and I had no idea blue ants existed. They are truly gorgeous, and have some of the more unique physical features ive seen. I don't see an issue with keeping a colony; you always provide an amazing habitat for them, and as someone else mentioned, you may be able to produce more queens for more colonies to help their population in the wild.

AC question of the week: my favorite was the flower crab spider. (I'm a sucker for spiders.) The reason she didn't eat the ant is that many spiders find ants unpalatable due to their formic acid, and their potential to bite, sting, and/or spray acid makes them more trouble than they're worth.

If you collected your termites alates from there i am 90% sure the species of the royal pair we have is from the genus Nasutitermes. By far the coolest termite genus in my opinion. The soldiers of these termites are able to shoot acid through their heads. And these termites have the habit of go on "raids" across the rainforest every few days in search of food. Being able to film this process will be such a awesome event.
@cicadafun3 жыл бұрын
Nasutitermitinae alates are usually longer and flat proportionally. The pair he captured is 90% likely to be a species of Odontotermes, a fungus farming termite. Of course, he could always end up capturing some Hospitalitermes alates since he has colonies nearby (12:42).
@bacula84243 жыл бұрын
@@cicadafun Its kind of hard to figure out with alates, aside from size the differences between species alates are minimal most of the pictures of nasutitermes queens I found have pale soldiers and workers, the ones shown in the video are darker so I couldn't really make out a definitive conclusion. Mainly I did speculation since the pair he collected were collected during this trip, and the nasutitermes colony happened to be relatively close. We'll have to wait and see which kind of soldiers are born.
@bacula84243 жыл бұрын
@@cicadafun Oh its true those are definitely hospitalitermes. My bad I confused them with nasutitermes.
@cicadafun3 жыл бұрын
@@bacula8424 Although it's true that termite alates can be generally hard to distinguish across species/genera or families due to their relative cockroach appearance, there's still consistent morphological and proportional differences outside of minute anatomical features which can help you readily identify certain generas/families. Nasutitermitinae imagoes tend to be flat and tube like, their bodies skinny relatively speaking. The heads are flat and rounded.The wings are large and have largely reduced venation. Macrotermitinae imagoes on the other hand are larger, bulkier and stouter in appearance and so resemble cockroaches more.
