I’ve been a musician for 50 of my 60 years and have seen a lot. In fact I have seen singers reduced to a mess live from drugs and alcohol. Van Halen at the US festival in 83, Roth was an unmitigated disaster vocally and as was Ozzy in Irvine, 1982 shortly after the death of his guitarist. As luck would have both of these shows were filmed for MTV and both vocal tracks were clearly dubbed as these guys were too wasted to sing anywhere near their usual competence There are different levels of drunk, including black out drunk, and every person reacts differently and fails or functions differently. So none of us are qualified to say if she was wasted or not, and how much of a train wreck she is capable of being, or not. Her reactions and behaviors could be very different than others with drinking issues. I don’t know 🤷🏻♀️ Here’s what I do know. The star spangled banner IS difficult. However it’s not as difficult as is being framed here. It doesn’t destroy you from the opening, it exposes you later in the song if you don’t have the range to deal with it. This woman was a mess from the opening line, tons of bad technique as was pointed out by this vocal expert My point is the star spangled banner can expose a limited singer but it can not change any remotely competent singer into THIS dumpster fire. She either can’t sing full stop, or there’s something else factoring in here or a mix of things. You don’t have to be a belter queen to sing this song as was suggested here (teenage Taylor Swift sang it beautifully at a baseball game) Btw, Whitney Houston lip synced that iconic Super Bowl performance 😂

People have said it’s really challenging to hear yourself in a stadium. I imagine that’s true. It doesn’t appear that she has in-ear monitors so that can contribute to being pitchy. That being said, she sounds totally unrehearsed. Like someone woke her up and put a mic in her hand and said “go!” Furthermore, while the range of the SSB is challenging, it’s all in the major key and most pros can go up and down the scale/arpeggio from muscle memory (even when drunk). Like I said before, I believe this is her Milli Vanilli reckoning.

I reckon she's a singer who has good days and bad days, and the bad days are bad. Probably, as you say, she needs some appropriate vocal training. This was a bad day. I also reckon I saw her panic after that first high note didn't go as planned, and then the anxiety kicked in, about 30 seconds or less into the song. And when you are anxious and panicking in the middle of singing a song, your breath control goes out the window. And the rest is history. If she was also drunk, that would make it worse IMO.

Since then I've had two drinks. I had one beer at my sister's wedding, as a sort of formality. The next time my cousin really wanted my opinion on this micro brew that she got, because she knew I used to be a bit of a connoisseur, or a cicerone. It was an ale that was aged in a whiskey cask, and I'll take the label's word for it, because there were hints of a smokey wood-like flavor. I don't even have the urge anymore.
@Mephilis786 ай бұрын
I think she's never had to sing without accompaniment, and once you go off track it's hard to find your way back. Also, maybe warm ups before she went out, or practicing the piece that same day. I'm sure she did practice, but probably the day before, or something. The thing with vocals is that the way your voice acts can change day to day. As a bass-baritone I really like singing two different things. Old Bing Crosby style stuff, and early 90s Grunge. Each one of those things requires a different approach. If I start off singing Grunge, it's going to be difficult to bring it back down to Crooner music later onthe same day. I basically have to retrain my voice to get back to the silky smooth Bing stuff.

Fascinating analysis. I love a good whiskey or two. But I have learned I just can't do it and play out effectively (the hard way). As a Nashville guy, I can tell you the culture here lends itself to playing out with a few drinks to take the edge off and fit the country music vibe. She is a relatively new artists and may still be learning this lesson. I have seen some amazing artists play writers rounds that sounded like shit after they drank too much either before or during the show. Add to that....many artists come to Nashville having developed a cool vocal tone but are often untrained and don't realize they are doing some really harmful things to their voice to achieve their tone. Just look at how many people in Nashville end up having vocal surgery. Nashville loves rasp and breathy twang. If done the wrong way, it can fry your vocal cords. Music row doesn't care. Fans love it. There are a 1000 new artists coming to town every day. Blow your voice out, they'll just make another one. Moral of the story......don't try to drink a ton and sing, and get a good vocal coach. You will be singing when your friends are done.

I've known many a vocalist who would have some jack or other alcohol and sang rather great. Perhaps if she sang in bars or in her case honky-tonk for a dozen years she might pass mustard. Although in today's bars people pay more attention to their phones 😢.

I mean, in my opinion, if you can already sing and have been born and raised in America where we hear the SSB beat into us from a young age, I really fail to believe how you could mess this up so badly. The only time I have seen people sing SSB so badly is when they already sound bad. Fergie’s sounded better, Roseanne is a comedian, hers was meant to sound bad. As far as not being able to sing SSB, I get that this song is NOT easy to sing but to sound this bad means you had to TRY to sound bad (PR stunt), or you just really can’t sing or perhaps she was drunk and sick like physically ill? How her team let her get up there is incredible. They should have said she was feeling unwell and brought in the backup.

I agree.

I know this is harsh, but that sounded like she was purposely trying to sound bad. My ears. It sounds like she is tone deaf to me.

Mabye relying on auto tune is letting non singers get famous, just a thought 🤔 it's obvious 😭

I personally love sohyang’s rendition of the U.S. national anthem(2014 NBA), so I was listening to it and happened to see this. Honestly, I think this is too much… If there was at least some respect for the national anthem as a singer, this is not it…

It’s the lame gen Z marble mouth that most whisper singers do that irks me. Worse than the grunge yarl.

Drunk is a lame ass excuse...own up to your bad performance I would say

that never happened to you but alcohol has a different effect on everyone, i can barely sing when I drink even if i'm not drunk, my vocal cords are inflamed and dried out and i don't have the energy or stamina to hit those notes. She's not the best singer out there but she's not a bad singer. It could be alcohol coupled with sleep deprivation, your state of mind can heavily affect how you sing. Maybe you're just someone who was functioning when you drank and she's not.

lol even the autotune they tried to implement couldn't help. Hey Ingrid just take accountability for it, and stop with the "I was drunk" stuff. You can admit to not being a good singer.

I went back and listened to some of her music. Limited voice and heavily relies on auto tune Not to be mean, but she's average at best. And by relying on auto tune and tech, she will never properly develop her voice.
