In her notes, Lauren Bernofsky explains that Haubrich Suite is a four-movement piece inspired by artworks from the Haubrich Collection, a private assemblage of German modernist art deemed "degenerate" by the Nazis. The collection was gathered by Cologne lawyer Josef Haubrich, who preserved these works in defiance of the Nazi regime.
Cologne's post-war reconstruction advanced more rapidly than in many other cities, thanks in large part to Josef Haubrich. A passionate collector of Expressionist and New Objectivity artworks since the 1920s, Haubrich continued his efforts even under the oppressive restrictions of the Nazi regime. In 1946, he donated his collection "for social reasons" to the public,
particularly aiming to provide young people with the chance to view and reflect on these works-giving them access, without hurry, to what they had been denied during twelve years of oppression.
Commissioned by the International Women’s Brass Conference, Haubrich Suite is arranged for a brass sextet, adding an extra horn to the standard brass quintet.
