Great idea with the vacuum cleaner. I was struggling to get a good clean on the lower burrs
@helpfulnatural

After several years using smaller lower end burr grinders, I finally graduated up to the Breville Smart Grinder Pro when I started using a non-pressurized porta-filter with my espresso machine. I've only had the grinder for a month, love it so far but this morning had a scary situation when a small stone got caught between the burrs! I had literally just cleaned it 5 minutes prior with Urnex' Full Circle cleaning tabs. I began to grind a double shot dose when at the very end of the grind time, I heard a noticeable crunch sound as it came to a dead stop. My heart was in my throat! When I took the hopper off and vacuumed out the beans, I could see a small grey stone, split in half, wedged between the burrs. I opened them up to the coarsest setting but still needed to use a long tweezer to dislodge the stones so I could remove the upper burr and clean everything out....again. I was very happy that after cleaning it out and reassembling everything, it works just fine. Whew!! I'm now going to spread my coffee beans out onto a white paper towel first to inspect them before pouring them into the hopper. I am also glad that the auto stop installed on this machine worked! Thank heavens!!

If you find yourself having to use this procedure to clean out the grinder more and more often to prevent jamming (as I did), there may be a part you need to replace. The impeller or fan sits beneath the inner burr. As the grinds fall between the inner and outer burr, they land in the grind cylinder where they are swept by the impeller to the chute. The impeller is plastic. Over time it wears down so that grounds accumulate along the sides of the grind cylinder, jamming the grinder and clogging the chute. If this happens, you can - send the entire unit back to Breville for repair - buy a grind assembly from EReplacement parts - buy a replacement impeller that a Breville enthusiast has designed and install it yourself

the plastic impeller is in the dose control pro and the smart grinder "non-pro" I believe, the smart grinder "pro" version has the metal impeller in it ;)

Remove the bean hopper, dump the beans still on top of the burr into a cup, put the hopper back on grind for a couple of seconds to remove remainder of beans in burr cavity, remove top burr then take a can of compressed (computer air works great) air over the sink or outside and blast the seated burr it works great.

Breville says NOT to use Grindz. They recommend the use of white rice. Grindz wears down the blades over time. I used it for years myself and it wore down the blades but I did not know this was happening. Anyway, Why Gale vacuums out good beans is a puzzle to me as you can pour them out. A tooth brush works just fine after a vacuum. I use medium roast so there's little oil residue if any , even with a fine grind settling. Oily Beans are of course more of a problem to clean. Using compressed air as a few have mentioned is not a good idea to my thinking as you can possibly be blow coffee into the motor over time. I should mention I have the Dose BCG 400 SIL. It's Manual and so easy to use .... I love it along with my Infuser. Clean your grinder every 2-4 weeks depending on use. Grinds sticking on the sides go rancid and you don't want that if you demand a smooth espresso every day of the year.

Thank you so much Gail, I always know I can count on you for any question, there’s a video for everything. I just purchased this grinder and was a little intimidated because I use a dark oily French roast and heard that dark and oily beans could damage this grinder. I will pick me up some grindz for sure. Thanks again!

This video was posted in October 2015. Just yesterday, Friday, November 30 of 2019 up Breville customer service rep maintained that plain white rice, not instant, will work perfectly well for cleaning out the oils and gunk on the burgers of any Breville grinder. You don't need to buy anything else! Just make sure you use the Coarse Setting of your grinder. Grinding white rice at a Fine Setting can actually make matters worse.

I have one of these grinders and I have an extra bean hopper for decaf which I swap out every day. In order not to waste beans, I find that just tipping the whole unit upside down will remove most of the beans that you sucked out with the vac. Must get some of the Grindz (?) though. I wonder where they sell that in Ontario???

Have a Breville Smartgrinder Pro and been using it for about 2 months. It jammed on first use. The service center said my beans are 'too hard'. Tried a few beans and grinder setting, this grinder is not able to grind anything lighter than medium roast at espresso setting. Had to set it to the coarsest setting to clear the 'hard beans' and set it back to the espresso range. Was about to clean the grinder thorough and this video was timely. Thanks!

I have had this grinder about 8 months and I love it. It looked to be the perfect compromise for the home enthusiast. I have given it some thorough cleanings but I have noticed that over time I have to use a finer and finer grind setting. Now I pretty much always use 1 and even then my shots are coming fast. I have a lever machine so I’m able to manually slow it down but I’m wondering if my grinder needs an adjustment or sharpening? At the price point I think it’s better to just replace this thing every year over buying a good commercial grinder but I’d rather not if I can just give the things some TLC. Any pointers? And thank you for your videos! I appreciate how much of your expertise that you share.

Okay I found several other videos you have on this topic. None of them helped me find the actual process for adjusting the burr. I can’t believe how long it took to find something online. I almost gave up and figured I have a model that isn’t adjustable. The trick was to remove the metal handle on the burr, it’s hinge is also a set pin.

Will the product in the video remove hazelnut flavour from beans that were ran through it? My husband thought it would be sweet to surprise me with a nice hazelnut coffee over the holidays, but he really doesn’t know anything about coffee beans etc... I knew it would leave a residue and now I want to get it back to regular beans. I was going to use instant rice, but have read that’s not the best idea.

I have the same question, wanting to use the product with a Barista Touch. Hope they answer here. My guess is that it’s safe to use because while the grinder is integrated, it is still separate from the brew group, so it should be the same as using it in the standalone grinder.

Grindz is the simplest way to do an OK job. I personally just take both burrs out and clean them by hand. And while they're out, I also clean the rest of the grinder where the coffee comes in contact with. You can't get better and cheaper than that. Though the time and complexity will depend on your specific grinder. I have a Baratza Vario, a Breville Smart Grinder and a Breville Dose Control and they are all relatively easy to take (partially) apart to have the burrs removed and the internals cleaned.
@helpfulnatural
@helpfulnatural 9 жыл бұрын
ascosta I clean my grinder(s) that way too but, not all grinders have a removable bottom burr. I have several different sizes of cleaning brushes to get in there and clean as well as I can and even use a blast of canned air once in a while to clear the chute. I've used rice in my grinders on a coarse setting and it does a very good job clearing out both grounds and oils left behind, especially from darker roasted coffee beans.
@ascosta
@ascosta 9 жыл бұрын
+helpfulnatural I'm not a professional technician, but I'm sure you can take the bottom burr from any grinder. Otherwise, how would they be replaced when worn out? Though I'm sure some are easier than others. So, I agree that if it's too hard and yu don't want to mess around with the grinder, then Grindz or rice are acceptable.
