I read an article that was attributing the "brighter" taste to the flat-bottom filter. I guess they tested pour-over too and found the flat-bottom Wave was brighter too. Apparently cones can over-extract competed to flat-bottom. I got the Oxo 12-cup with the flat bottom and i think the taste is a little better than the 9-cup version when I tried it.

Just replaced my Bunn thermal carafe machine with the OXO 9 cup Barista Brain. Difference in taste of my coffee is night and day. Love the OXO. Like how it automatically does a short pre-soak or "bloom" on the grounds prior to actually brewing, obviously nowhere near as fast as the Bunn but I will gladly give up speed to the exceptional taste the OXO provides. Simply an amazing machine IMO
@jamiehung87613 жыл бұрын
Hey, just wondering how the OXO machine is holding up for you, and does the thermal carafe keep the coffee hot for a while?
@lmfinato3 жыл бұрын
@@jamiehung8761 Sorry for the late reply. Sadly the OXO is built like junk. It made/makes the absolute best coffee I ever drank bar none. BUT, the carafe fails, the machine leaks and so on. OXO replaced 2 carafes, and then the whole machine once. but I gave up. Recently I bought a Zojirushi machine. It is decent in that the carafe is VERY high quality, keeps the coffee hotter than anything I ever had but is not as fast or as good as the OXO at actually making coffee. It's OK though. You just need to throw out their instructions and use the "golden ratio" (7 to 8 grams coffee to 5oz water rather than the 5 grams the instructions say). Doing that it's very close to the OXO but not as fast
@jamiehung87613 жыл бұрын
@@lmfinato No problem, thank you for your reply!! This is helpful :) I was really in between a Bonavita, OXO 9 cup, and Moccamaster, but currently leaning more toward Moccamaster now judging by both quality and durability. Wanted to hear how other people's experiences were before deciding.

I picked up a Bonavita 8 cup to try one out because I have been using the Oxo 12-cup mostly. I can verify the Bonavita can make a very hot pot of coffee even at 10,000 feet. I never burned my tongue with my Oxo and today I poured a cup and drank like usual and Bonavita's coffee was a lot hotter. I also measured the temp from the beans and it was 192 degrees which is beyond impressive at this altitude (boiling is 195 here). I might be switching to the Bonavita. The Oxo works great, it is a little large and I think the Bonavita will out preform it at this altitude.

I can also report that cold brewing works at 10,000 feet. lol. Making coffee is definitely interesting up here. Once coffee shop in Denver "boils" their coffee in a vessel then filters out the coffee, almost like cowboy coffee. The boiling point in Denver is the perfect temp for brewing, so they took advantage of it.

It's a bit difficult to really rely on these reviews. Granted, I have not watched them all, but have watched quite a few, and have yet to have them say that they did not like one of the machines. The Braun, for instance, has gotten a lot of criticism for producing very inconsistent "gold" coffee, and for producing very bitter coffee. Not to mention that in that video, she used on 9 scoops when she was supposed to use 10. Still, somehow, the flavor was excellent. In one of the technivorm videos, she did not have quite enough coffee yet, so put in two scoops and got more, as she was brewing a full pot. However, the first of the two scoops was not level and not to the top (by about 3 mm), and the second was not even 1/2 full. Even when they are doing these comparisons, it is never "this one is clearly better of the two and would go for this machine over the other." It's always well this is good and this is good too, highlights a small difference (this ones "Fruitier" and because I do not like that as much as others, I would not choose it, but they're both good--- Breville v. Moccamaster review. In this case, this ones a little lighter, etc.). She is fun to watch, but I would not buy on the seller's recommendations.

does preinfusion means the machine is better at making coffee or will it produce stronger flavor
@SeattleCoffeeGear8 жыл бұрын
+Sam El-Sabagh Preinfusion or blooming allows the coffee to off gas some before the brewing process. The result is a fuller flavored cup with more complexities than you might find in an un-bloomed coffee. Check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gICZamlsoNeEaMk
@joshevans51278 жыл бұрын
+Sam El-Sabagh preinfusion helps the water to saturate the coffee completely before going through the brew cycle. This allows your end product to be smooth and bold, as all the water pours over the coffee bed with the coffee presaturated, not having to worry about uneven brew.

I just bought a 8 cup Bonita glass carafe and love the design. However, I only brew 4-5 cups as its only for me. It brews a the right temp but the time it finishes the brew, the carafe temp only reaches 160 degrees. Not HOT-HOT. After you pour it in a cup and add a teaspoon of cream, it goes done to 140 degrees. Quite tepid. Can you recommend a coffee maker that brews hot-hot coffee?? Whats your opinion?

How does the coffee stay warm after it's brewed?
@LemLTay7 жыл бұрын
The thermal carafe keeps it hot, like a "thermos" or travel mug. To keep it hot for longer, one can try pre-heating it with boiling water and rinsing it out. A hot carafe will keep the coffee in there at a good drinking temperature (nice and hot) for approximately 90 minutes, so I'm told!

Gail a couple of questions. I was under the understanding that after coffee beans are ground they become stale much quicker. So if I ground my coffee the night before won't the flavor be affected by it being held over night? Have you folks ever done a test on how long these thermos carafes hold their temps. Thanks
@SeattleCoffeeGear8 жыл бұрын
+1timby If you grind your coffee the night before, yes, they will not be as fresh as they would have been ground right before brewing. But for some, the convenience outweighs that issue. To answer your other question, not an official test- but we would imagine several hours! Looks like we might have a test on our hands!
