Hi Florian. Imho, it looks like to me that it is an advantage for Richomme to have a comfortable boat with this particular chair, the great visibility from inside and all the computers quite well set closed to the chair. Richomme looks like great while Dalin looks like very exhausted. I think the more the sailor can rest and be in a comfortable environment, the more he or she will be able to stay in a good mental and body conditions. What you think about it?

@Marco-q6d yes! Very much so. I talk about the chairs in the first show of this season a lot. Because of this reason exactly. I had an I review with Heerma 4 years ago and we both had the same idea that a comfortable good sitting and sleeping place was not a luxury, but an advantage. And I think that is what is being proven this time around

I follow your channel quite a while and like it a lot. Thanks for the chance to get some questions answered. Here is mine. How do the sailors manage to make the video clips ? Sometimes they seem to use drones, but in 30 kn wind this is propably not possible. And on board when they work with the sails, the camera even seems to follow them. Thanks Flo greetings Robert

Hi, also a question, maybe for next Q&A based on the following content: I recently watched a documentary about „Illbruck“, which won the Volvo Ocean race in 2002. Here the crew had to do the race with as less as possible weight. E.g. the handles of all toothbrushes were cut half or they only were allowed 2 underwear shorts. Everything was limited to the maximum. In the Vender on contrary we see some stuff that could be seen as unnecessary weight. Like all the camera equipment, drones, some have decoration in their boat. Now my questions: 1. Do you think the sailors would perform better if they would each get rid of let’s say 10kg of equipment? And if so: how much is the impact on such a long journey? 2. Do you have any idea how much is the weight of all the tools and repair materials the average vendee sailor is using? Cheers and keep on the nice work!👍

Hi Florian. Thanks for the report. Brilliant as usual. Q&A: how far can the boom swing from the centreline? How does the head of the sail not foul the backstay and if the boat accidentally gybes how is the mast supported given that they only tension the windward backstay. Thanks.

As far as I understand Imocas are being steered just by autopilot (no hand rudder), so the question I have is if the latest generation of autopilots have the ability to see the waves ahead (with the many cameras that are now on deck) and steer the boat in order to surf those waves (just as the older boats were sailed during the Volvo Ocean Race, where they were steered down the waves), instead of plowing blindly into the next wave ahead at 30 kt of speed.

Question on the Spoiler designs, it seems that the slender shape as it comes to interface the hull, looks like weak stress area. Could the design have more of wider section then taper out to tip. I believe the slender shape helps with hull drag reduction when in the water when tacking. Thanks, Dave

How do the skippers single handedly climb the mast with a harness line in tension for protection? Do they use climbing gear, like jumars up a static halyard? I would be interested to know how they self belay.

The routing prediction is based on the weather prediction. When these huge low pressure systems roll through the wind direction changes a lot. The other factor is the ice exclusion zone. Remember these predictions could be very different in 24 hours.

Question: Note that these comments are a bit long and aren’t meant to be rude to the skippers in any way. I saw the recent updates of Seb Simon and Charlie Dalin. Both seem to attribute Yoan Richomme’s success in closing the gap to luck/favorable conditions/situation. In Seb’s case, he blames it on his broken foil, but Seb isn’t gaining on Charlie (actually, he’s falling behind), so while it definitely weakens his options, I wouldn’t say that it is not fair. Contrast this with the unfortunate falling back of Thomas Ruyant from this leading three-pack - there it was totally weather-related due to his lagging position. In Charlie’s case, he blames the closing gap on Yoann having better wind than him, but they are both in the same wind field with the same amount of wind and waves. So, my question is can you assess analytically via the performance metrics whether Yoann and/or his boat are indeed just sailing better than the other two? I am obviously biased toward Yoann, but it seems that the other two are trying to throw shade on his advance now that the lead is slipping. In actuality, I think Yoann should be commended for his long-game strategy after taking the northern route in the Southern Ocean to avoid risking damage to his boat, he pushed his performance to the max by consistently averaging over 500 nm per day for a week or more! I also think that he is better rested and taking less of a beating (e.g., skippers sleeping through planned maneuvers and bumps and cuts due to being abruptly tossed around) due to his multi-windowed cockpit and shock-absorbing chair configuration. That seems to be a strategic advantage that I think other boats will adopt in the next VG.

Hi Florian, I'm just wondering...where are the Dutch in these sailing events? while the Netherlands is a small country, it's a big sailing nation. But the Dutch aren't really there anymore in major sailing events .however there is quite a big boating industry in the NL, is it a sponsor issue? Most of the french sponsors are completely unknown outside France..but still able to invest a fortune in such adventurers.

This is a good question because the Dutch have a strong history in the ocean race. French media report that 80% of the population follows the race which means it is offering good exposure to French sponsors.
