During the sequence when Mulan gets ready to take her father's armor and disguise herself as a man, you can see dragon imagery throughout the entire thing, to symbolize the great dragon that watches over the family. Conclusion: Mushu was unable to awaken the Great Dragon because it already left, signifying that Mulan is the Great Dragon that protects her family.

Mulan is what every strong female character should be. She's not arrogant, in fact she doubts herself quite a lot but she pulls through because she's brave, she's not naturally skilled, she actually starts out as one of the worst, and she's not the best because of feminism or plot, she's great because she was determined and smart. Mulan feels so much more human than most other strong female characters we have in the modern day because her story is about self-discovery which is one the most relatable and human ways a character can develop. Most studios nowadays would have Mulan be naturally the best and then have her learn a slight bit of humility while still ensuring the audience knows that she's the best that ever lived, instead the movie shows a bright young woman who is unsure about who she is who rises to the top after hard work and learns that while she may not be what society wants her to be, she can still live a life that _she_ is proud of. The scene where she climbs that tower using the weights really highlights how great her character is, she doesn't get arrow because she's the strongest, she got it because she was smart and wrapped the weights together rather than fighting against them.

That's why I love the Pocahontas Disney movie so much. It's not historically accurate in the slightest, but I love that version of Pocahontas because she is curious and brave and kind and stands up for herself and those around her. She doesn't end up with the love interest at the end. Instead, she decides to stay where she is needed, with her family. I just relate to her a lot and it sucks when all people see are the historical problems in the movie. It's a movie! It's fiction! Get over it! Lol

disney was very respected in the 80s/90s, having extremely strong and independent female characters (jasmine, ariel, belle, esmeralda, and etc etc etc), look at how they've humiliated themselves and become such a joke now... how have they've fallen so far... making a $hitpile of everything they get their hands on that is not theirs... and when they actually do something that is their own, it's the same $hitpile...

Fun fact about the Fan move that Mulan uses to disarm Shan Yu: I saw a documentary with the animators who explained that was a real martial arts move. They brought in a martial artist so they could record that move along with others, which they then animated. This is part of the reason why it looks so cool is that it is something can actually be done.

Yeah, it takes a special kind of fan, though. I think they're made of steel or something. Samurai would carry them in situations where they couldn't carry a sword, for whatever reason. I remember reading a book series where women would carry them for self-defense in situations where openly carrying a weapon might complicate the diplomatic side of things, but I can't guarantee that that specific aspect is rooted in the real world. I wouldn't be surprised, but I haven't found any specific mentions of it.

One thing I don't see a lot of people talk about is at the end, you see two different types of bow. When the emperor bows to Mulan he does a respectful bow that implies equality. That is why everyone else around her knelt as the bowed onto the ground which was something implying whatever they bowed to (be it person or deity in prayer) was greater than the one bowing. He basically called her as equal to himself as the emperor and therefore greater than the rest of them, which is why they all hurried to bow down before her to show proper respect. It was pretty much the greatest honor he could give her.

Yesss, I love Mulan! Apart from the great comedy and songs, Mulan herself is one of my favourite Disney heroines. She's no princess, she doesn't have magic powers or is the most beautiful in the land. She succeeds because she's brave and smart and works really hard. She's no chosen one or gifted super hero and yet never ever let's herself become a damsel in distress. She's such an admirable and realistic (for Disney standards) heroine. ❤

He never fell in love with Ping, "he" saved his army and his life so it's normal that he had great consideration for "him", but having consideration doesn't mean being in love or having sexual desire towards someone... Then, If he wasn't relieved that she's a girl, it's bcs it was a disgrace for them to be saved by a woman and she lied to him, women weren't allowed to go in war, they were shameful bcs honor was very important in those days, there's a reason why Mulan pretended to be a man. It has nothing to do abt him being in love with Ping, he never showed any interest toward men and he fallen in loves with Mulan which is a girl literally, bcs he accepted her even if she's a warrior. I mean, Ping literally saved his life and his army, how do you think he'd react ? Just "good job" ? Bcs straight men can't have consideration towards men ? Otherwise it'd be necessarily romantic or sexual ? Weird to think like that. It's creepy to always link everything to smth sexual.

Mulan is based on a poem in China where the female warrior (Mulan ) fought for her country at a time when women were not allowed to fight as a soldier. After she saved her country and they found out she was a woman impersonating a soldier she was inevitably killed. Unfortunately the Disney version takes away from the actual possible historical presence that the poem originally had. However, everyone is uncertain on whether or not she existed. Very sad indeed, but great reaction.

One of my favourite in-jokes for the movie are the character names. Chi Fu the advisor has a name that sounds like 欺负, meaning "to annoy"... Just like his character 😂 Also, the reason why Shang is taken aback by Mulan's fake name is because, when you add her surname, is read as Fa Ping - 花瓶 meaning "flower vase", which in turn is slang for "pretty (boy) but useless" 😂

Took animation classes from the animator of the Emperors Advisor in college. Did Lilo and Stich, Brother Bear. He was fantastic. Seeing his personality and specific style in that character makes me very happy. Darko Cesar deserves more credit. My man is also from Ukraine. Great guy. He was the animator for Lilo and Koda. Getting a compliment from him on my work was something I will treasure.

@@k1988smith No, you're misunderstanding the fact that he was highly regarded towards Ping and you have a fantasy that it's imperative to see characters who aren't straight, whereas this film dates from 1998 when making non-hetero characters was not a thing at all. Then, having consideration towards someone doesn't mean it's always romantic or having a sexual desire? It's rly weird to always connect smth with their sexual orientation. Shang never showed any love interest in men, what he wanted was to make them strong and he was proud of what Ping did in addition that "he" saved his LIFE and his army, so, how do you think he'll react ? Just "good job" bcs a straight man can't have a consideration towards another man ? Otherwise it would be necessarily romantic/sexual ? Really weird how you think. And i'll repeat myself, but if he was mad that she's actually a girl, it had nothing to do with the fact that he loved Ping , it's bcs she lied to him and it was a disgrace for them (honor was extremely important at that time) so send a woman in war was terrible, and she saved her army and Shang on top of that, so they were shameful. But, he accepted Mulan as a warrior and fell in love with her, while with Ping, he's never fallen in love

@@blabla94567 I think Shang is bisexual and many other people do as well. Disney would deny it if asked but there are vibes. Watch the movie again and pay attention when Ping says "For what it's worth. I think you're a great captain" vibes! I'm not misunderstanding and I know when the movie was released. I own a VHS copy of Mulan as I mentioned. My comment only states that Shang is Bi. I don't mention anything about how he felt about Mulan being a woman or if it upset him and don't know how it's relevant to your argument. You can leave me another comment explaining facts about the time period and it will not change my mind. I have an observation that is different to yours - that's fine. I hope you can respectfully agree to disagree.
@blabla94567

@@k1988smith No, he's not bi at all, all you do is misinterpret bcs you're desperate to watch characters who aren't straight. He's "bi" bcs YOU want characters who aren't straight like some ppl and many ppl joke about that (that he's bi but in reality they know he's not) he married Mulan and only show romantic interest towards her, not any men. Shang is their general who taught them to fight and make war, as a general if one of his men would have done something incredible, he would be PROUD, when Ping told him that, he was proud and had consideration for "him" esp after what "he" did. You realize that in an army their lives are at stake, bonds are formed (which again have nothing to do with sexuality or romance) because they can die at any moment etc... You'll be surprised, but yes, a straight man can be proud & having consideration towards another man without it being sexual or romantic ! It's creepy to connect everything to smth sexual. So yes, you misunderstand that being proud of someone isn't necessarily due to a sexual or love attraction, it's creepy to think like that. Look at how non-straight people were treated in those days, it was unthinkable to create characters who weren't part of the norm, you're literally in delulu, the developers never said anything about that as well, bcs it wasn't romantical between Shang & Ping, but with Mulan, yes andhe married her but you really try to convince yourself that he's bi, bcs you're desesperate to see a non straight character. Shang was only PROUD of one of his men that he trained hard, but of course, people like you, want to tie everything to smth sexual, which is rly creepy

This movie was my childhood. I couldn't relate to a lot of the Disney princesses because they were mostly blond and overly girly at the time. (I was the opposite lol) I know mulan isn't a princess but she didn't have to be. It was also my first introduction into another culture and I was fascinated by it for the longest time (despite the obvious inacuracies thrown in for the time period). God, I was so excited for the remake, but it was crushing just how bad it really was. 😢😢😢

The thing is, it's not really that much about gender in the end, but more universally about "being different than the people around you", "standing out" and the whole "your weakness is your strength"-thing, all universal and often used themes. Yes, Mulan is different, because she is the only woman among a group otherwise comprised of dudes, but she falls in with the party of misfits who stand out on their own already, each one not exactly being the poster child for the "perfect soldier", her simply being mistaken for another "scrawny guy". I'm not saying it wouldn't work if it was only Mulan and it in fact only made its point through gender (to save time for more action or whatever), but imo it just works so much better this way.

Interesting fact: Its not about the film in general but oddly enough a tale that is so much like this film. In WWI a young Serbian woman named Milunka Savić joined the army in her brothers place when he was drafted. Her brother had Tuberculosis and was unable to fight, she didn't want him being arrested so she masqueraded as him to take his place so he wouldn't be punished. When the soldiers found out she wasn't a man, they still allowed her to keep fighting because of how well she fought and her courage in battles. After one of the battles the soldiers were asked who fought bravely and many said she did.

I didn’t see anyone else who commented this, so I figured it was worth adding: the great stone dragon doesn’t wake up when mushu rings the gong because he’s already left. In the previous scene Mulan is sitting beneath the dragon when she decides to take her fathers place in the army. It is at that point, the great stone dragon awakens and solidifies Mulan‘s resolve to take her fathers place. That’s why you keep seeing imagery of the dragon throughout Mulan’s transformation, and a final flash of the dragon before her grandmother wakes up and realizes that she is missing.
