Hiccup has one of the best developments I've ever seen to a animation like this. He was mature from the start, but dependent on his father's approval. The growth in his personality when he finds his own purpose is something really worthy to see.

With both Astrid and Stoick, Toothless waited for an apology. While he was flying erratically, he wanted Astrid to apologise for threatening to expose them to the rest of the tribe, and when she did he stopped trying to scare her and forgave her. With Stoick, he wanted him to apologise for a) chaining him up and using him to find the nest, and more importantly b) for being horrible to Hiccup and not listening to him, which led to all of this and was what risked Hiccup's life; once he got the apology, only then did he let up and show Stoick that his son was alive, that he saved him.

Fun fact: the main theme you hear (for example during the test flight where they had a teeny fall accident) that is actually a combination of both Hiccup's and Toothless' theme songs. Also during the scene where hiccup and Toothless dodge and weave through sea stacks, before that toothless was essentially breaking to slow down with his wings. During that part it was only toothless' theme playing. But as soon as hiccup ditches his cheat sheet and just goes pure instinct, only then did hiccup's theme kick in

A small detail about why Night Furies have retractable teeth is by fair one of my favorite details. If it wasn't obvious based on how Night Furies have to build up their plasma blasts, they retract their teeth because their own built up blasts are so hot and powerful their teeth would melt if not for their evolutionary traits of retraction.

The reason why Toothless didn't reveal Hiccup to Stoick immediately is because he was waiting for him to show humility. Like when he was scaring Astrid to death (Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile!), he only stopped when she apologised. Once Stoick knelt and apologised to Toothless, only then did he reveal he saved Hiccup. On the opposite side of things, when Hiccup days things like "I did it!", it blows up in his face!

remember seeing this in imax 3d, i will tell you seeing the flying sequences in imax 3d compared to the ones from avatar is no contest... How to train your dragon did it better because you felt like you were flying with them! the moment at the end where hiccup reveals his prosthetic leg actually surprised me since i have never seen an animated movie do that with even a minor character. and the music is STELLAR! also remember my mom saying she thought it would be some dumb kid's movie, then after the movie ended she said it was hard to cry in 3d goggles at the parts with stoick disowning and then showing humility to his son. I loved it enough to see it 2 more times in a normal cinema, each time the audience gave applauses at the end of their showings! it really is the best trilogy from dreamworks if not in the top 3 and the first one still holds up among the best ones out there from the studio!
