Ali is completely right about the backstory, but there’s a whole lot of stuff that happened between Kanye and Taylor over a 7 or 8 year period where she frequently gave him chance after chance and he continuously let her down and betrayed her. It if course started when he came onstage and talked over her vmas acceptance speech . A few years later he tried to apologize by sending her flowers to apologize and she accepted his apology and they kept a pretty amicable friendship for a bit and then he personal,y called her and asked her to present him with a vanguard award I think it was and she accepted. He then accepted the award and tried to humiliate her onstage while she sat in the audience hugging Kim and said vmas tried to embarrass him by forcing him to accept the award from Taylor after he ASKED her to do it. She said at that moment she realized he was a,ways going to use her for clickbait and attention but still forgave him again when he apologized privately. He then called her and asked her if he could use the line “I think me and Taylor might still have s*x.” She approved that lyric and said she was relieved because she thought he was gonna say something mean or call her a bitch or something and he said he would never do that. The song released and in it he chose to use “I think me and Taylor might still have s*x, why? I made that bitch famous.” She got most upset that he tried to take credit for her success and hard work and then and there she ended the friendship for good.” Taylor is the master at embracing the persona people place on her. She first chose to do it when she wrote blank space after the media became obsessed with labeling her as a psychotic man eater who drove men away with her obsessive behavior. She then chose to wrote a song from the perspective of this character they basically turned her into. She then did it with Kim and Kanye with the snakes and once she no longer needed that because she grew her confidence back she started her next era the Lover! Era with a snake turning into butterflies signifying her shedding the bad reputation she was given when Kim and Kanye lied and edited the video footage trying to frame her.

Fantastic synopsis! I just want to add that in that phone call, you could 💯 hear the reluctance to give hime permission in her voice. She was VERY OBVIOUSLY uncomfortable with the whole situation. I mean imagine an older man with a whole lot of power in the industry who has already proven a willingness to use that power to manipulate and hurt you calling you up to ask for permission to publicly say something demeaning about you?!?! I am gonna guess she was very intimidated by him and can imagine her whole body shaking in that moment, trying to process what he was saying and not knowing how to respond. I'm sure she was scared to say how she really felt about it. He absolutely caught her off guard...and taped it to use as further manipulation. It makes me absolutely furious whenever I think of that phone call! I am so sick of people saying she gave him permission. You can hear in her voice that she was not okay with it, but didn't know how to respond in the moment. And, yes, he never told her the entirety of what he was going to say.

Another thing to add to that recap, Kim released a manipulated recording saying she approved the lyric as it was in the song, got her canceled for being a snake, and drove her into basically total isolation for a year and a half. It wasn’t until the year after this tour that the unedited footage leaked, showing her side of the story all along was real and they were lying.

And don't forget the naked Taylor doll he had in bed in his video. I think it's safe to say she didn't approve of that either.
@whiteserpent6753
@whiteserpent6753 Жыл бұрын
@@TaterCotI think that the difference between the line she approved (however reluctantly) and the full line is in perceived power. The first half of the line has a kind of supplicant air- he might beg her, and she might agree. While kind of icky overall, there’s still the sense that she’s in control. The second half (“I made that b**** famous”) flips that so that he has all of the power and she would naturally agree because she owes him. When she said at the time that she would have never agreed to the part of the line where he called her a b****, I 100% believed that, because that is not the way she markets herself at all. She would never approve a lyric that completely undermines her brand.

I'm certain there is atleast some degree of misgony. "she only writes about her exes and love life" as taylor said it herself "no one says that about ed sheeran, no one says that about bruno mars. They wrote songs about their current girlfriends, their exes and their love life and no one raises a red flag".
@bulletsandbracelets4140
@bulletsandbracelets4140 Жыл бұрын
Eh, I am not sure about that. I think the misogyny was 100% in the media for starting that narrative. But celebrities are often reduced down to a single aspect, and I don't think it's entirely fair to blame non-fans for the impression they get from the media. I imagine he'd reduce Bieber or the Jonas Brothers down similarly, as many do. Doesn't matter if you feel her music is better, if you only hear it in passing on the radio, your only real understanding comes from what you pick up.
@gaceofspades
@gaceofspades Жыл бұрын
@bulletsandbracelets4140 but it's fundamentally rooted in misogyny. Whether the person saying that inteds it in that way or not, the root lies there. The guys are players and get anyone they want. The girls are sl*ts. Of course, the casual listener/radio listener gets a very select number of songs, but taking on that narrative without giving the person (whoever it may be) a try is stupid. "Taylor only does .. " has been proven wrong a long long time ago, that sht started in 2012, before that the narrative was that she didn't write her own songs cause she couldn't possibly be that talented. When that was proven wrong (which ultimately means she is that talented), people went and searched for the next issue they had with her. Endless circle of hatred
@bulletsandbracelets4140
@bulletsandbracelets4140 Жыл бұрын
@@gaceofspades I think you misunderstand me. But I don't want to argue, so we can agree to disagree. I think people are unfair to her because she is popular and seen as a radio icon rather than a serious songwriter, not because of her dating history. I think those types of comments come directly from the media, and if they spun that kind of narrative about a male artist, non-fans of that artist would repeat them just as readily. But I guess I could be wrong. Hard to tell when the media is definitely 100% misogynistic when it comes to that sort of thing. Worth saying though - country music in general gets that same reputation/reduction, that it's all about trucks or beer or breakups. People reduce the things they hate on XD every time.

Maybe for Sebs it’s not misogyny but the clash back against her from media, Kanye, that she doesn’t write her songs, cannot sing, that she’s calculative and manipulative is misogyny. Men write about their exes and breakups but if she does it then she is playing the victim. It’s typical misogyny. Women are not supposed to talk back, that’s her capital crime. She asks for Spotify to pay fairly, wants her records, and makes millions then she’s greedy - ever heard a man being called that in similar case? The media still call her Machiavellian, cunning, mastermind…. Even now! A woman can’t just be brilliant. The fact that so many hetero men find her offensive or bad and she’s mostly loved by women and LGBTQ should settle the issue.

The whole dislike Taylor thing I think is partly because she's a woman, but mainly because she's popular with teenage girls. It's so sad that whatever thing teenage girls really love is imediatetly seen as really uncool and the one thing everyone always makes fun of. Artists like Taylor or Justin Bieber or One Direction (like it's fine if you don't like the music, but people generally dislike the music without even having heard it, and they dislike the artists without knowing anything about them) are exampels of this. But it's not just music, even books/movies like Twilight as well. It's fine if you don't like something, but the amount of hate Twilight has gotten over the years is not comparable to how bad you might think it is even if you honestly don't like it (and most people who hate on it haven't even read it). There are a lot of books that's a lot worse of there, but people just want to hate on the thing teenage girls likes, and it's so frustrating.

yes about the phone call, when kim and kanye “called to get her to ok the lyric in the line” they never told taylor they were gonna use the word “bitch” then when kim leaked the video in back in 2016?17? the video was edited and it made it seem like taylor did know and that’s when most of this went down. kim calling taylor a liar and a “snake” and “taylor swift is over party trending on “ trending on twitter world wide calling taylor fake and a liar. but this year someone leaked the WHOLE. footage of the edited video of the phone call and it literally proofs taylor wasn’t lying about not knowing they were gonna use the “bitch” lyric, they never told her about that. but they fact that swifties were they ones having taylor swift back and the lyrics “The world moves on, another day another drama, drama But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma And then the world moves on, but one thing's for sure Maybe I got mine, but you'll all get yours” is so much more iconic now.

The whole Reputation Tour movie is fantastic. If you can't do the whole movie, then at the very least you should do "Ready for It?" including the movie intro which leads into the first song. Other iconic moments: "Getaway Car" (including the 2-minute intro that played on the stadium screen), "King of My Heart", and the Long Live/New Year's Day mashup. Something else that should be a top priority is the movie "Folklore: The Long Pond Sessions" because you get not only the music, but short discussions of each song that are priceless.

Once you dig deeper and especially after you see the movie/go live! Plus as I and a couple others recommended, watch Miss Americana. I know it’s a big time commitment, but it will really tell you a lot about her and her motivations, be it being driven by the applause, or vengeful over people repeatedly betraying her so much that they tried to ruin her career and almost succeeded, or vengeful/hurt over boyfriends who legitimately were not good to her/have really larger problematic age gaps (like John Mayer - 32 when she was 19. Dear John and Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve are about him and are among the best in her discography.) 16:21

Yes! I also think the back story helps add a bunch of context to her lyrics, including the way misogyny in the media affected the public perception of her. One that as a more peripheral fan for years, I even allowed myself to believe some of the media about her playing a victim, always singing about men and going through them (slut shaming her), that she’s annoying, etc. It wasn’t until I got to know her better that I realized some of this isn’t even really true, or it’s taken out of context, or it’s blown out of proportion by the media. So Seb, I don’t think you personally don’t like her because of your misogyny, but more-so because the surface level narrative you’d know about her is very much colored by misogyny.

I'll try to be as brief as possible about the whole phone call story. - After Taylor was clearly upset about the song, Kim posted the short clips of phone call on Snapchat and branded Taylor as a snake. - Taylor took a hard fall, # taylorisoverparty was trending worldwide, most of her celebrity friends left her to side with the Kardashians, and Taylor disappeared from public until the release of LWYMMD. - Later in 2019, the full 20 minutes phone call got leaked from Kardashian's side, which proved that 1) Taylor indeed had never heard/approved of the song, 2) subtly warned Kanye against calling her B-word, "that's not mean..i thought you were gonna call me a dvmb btch or something" 3) advised him against writing misogyny lyrics. All of those were cut off and the phone call was reduced into a few seconds Snapchat clip that made Taylor look like the bad guy. Swifties tried to demand apology from the Kardashian but they brushed it off with covid, like "who cares? people are dying" 🤡

misogyny 1000000% (!!!!!) plays a factor & there's no way to debate it! taylor wouldn't get most of the hate/criticism she has gotten in her career if she was a male artist. people wouldn't pay as much attention to/dissect her personal life if she was a male artist. people wouldn't villanize her the way they have if she was a male artist. she wouldn't have to constantly fight for people to take her seriously. she wouldn't have to reinvent herself every era. men can do the same thing their whole career & everyone loves it but women have to constantly do something new/exciting to stay relevant.

I have to say i prefer the Eras tour performance of this song (the current tour) over this one, cause she puts in more anger and she is leaning in to the bad bitch/sexy persona

I can’t see how anyone can question the misogyny here. Especially the slut shaming. Imagine if Taylor walked on to the stage, and grabbed the mic away from teenage Billie Eilish, and said The Weekend should have won the award The hate would never end. Never

If you are a Kanye fan, I would check out “innocent” from speak now. She wrote it at 19 after Kanye took the mic from her. Shows how much she tried to understand him

She reminds me a lot of Michael Jackson in that she gives the full performance whether it be in a music video or on stage. The attention to detail about just about everything is amazing.

I’m a man who has dealt with many of her same issues on a much smaller scale, of course. I think people are just hateful out of jealousy and spite and plain ole meanness. She’s smart, kind and authentic. Most people are cynical and suspicious. She’s vulnerable and sensitive and misunderstood and maybe overreactive, but I’m that, too, so I give her grace. I get it.

2009 when that VMA thing happened where kanye took the mic from Taylor on the stage a lot of people are against it and Taylor wanted to forgive him so she wrote a song for him "Innocent" in her album Speak Now where she says she forgive him cause everybody makes mistake and they were kind of friends. Then after few years Kanye called Taylor for the permission for his song "Famous" and Taylor says "ya cool" but she also wanted to see the lyrics first. Then the song came and it was not what Taylor expected also the music video they made a wax figure looking like Taylor it's awful and Taylor said she didn't know and Kim edited the video and leaked just a part of it and called her snake and everybody jumped and cancelling her calling her fake etc etc. Year after someone released the whole phone call where you can clearly see Taylor was very uncomfortable and she said yes jusy because she didn't wanted to start anything with him again. And also Kanye never showed her lyrics before releasing And then there comes "Look What You Made Me Do"

To be honest...bit disappointed that you didn't do the music video. But since you now know the song you can do that with the cheat list with all the different easter eggs that there are in that video. Since it takes a lot of digs with different things, not just with the Kanye/Kim thing. The whole video is better when you know the behind stories. And also. It came out that Kim had edited the phone call to make it sound like she agreed for him to use her in the song. Someone later leaked out the whole convo but there was a moment or two where people thought that she was liar with saying that she didn't agree to that. There was also Kanye editing her to his video as nude in bed with him if I remember right. That whole thing went so bad for her that she actually pulled back from the public and nobody saw her for year. I didn't have very high opinion from K due the whole taking the mic from her in the vma but after finding out this...yeah. That put him in totally new level of garbage. And there is a lot of people with mental health issues and they still don't act like that towards other people. That is not an excuse.
